Why You Should Never Go Overtime With Your Speech or Presentation

We all have internal clocks in our heads and when your clock says “times up” your brain will disconnect from the input it is receiving. I attend Church on regular basis and of course there is a sermon midway through the mass. Our Monsignor would broadcast from the pulpit for about 15 minutes at each mass even his stand ins would keep the same time parameters. When the Monsignor retired the new young Monsignor started doing his sermons about 5 to 10 minutes longer. You could see that the other church members of all due respect for the clergy were shutting off because they were used to a said 15 minute sermon. Before anybody takes the stage there is some kind of time given to the audience as to how long the talk will be. I know that you have all experienced this phenomenon during a speech or presentation when the speaker goes overtime your brain shuts off almost automatically. The problem is that in a lot of cases, your audience may likely forget the content that was broadcasted during the public speaking presentation just because they never formed a closing in their mind because they shut down before the end of the public speaking presentation.
A lot of people are good speakers and have had a lot of public speaking experience, but have never taken a presentation skills training class. There are some individuals that think just because have been called on to speak for many years have all the tactics down. Some even think that presentation skills workshops are beneath them. Learning to deliver a speaking presentation in a designated amount of time is just one of the few things that some of the fearless speakers can learn from attending a public speaking workshop. There are many other things that “experienced speakers” can tune up through a comprehensive public speaking workshop. Most people are convinced that they can “win” the audience over by just delivering a “good “presentation, while this perception may seem to be successful to the presenter, there is a proper and successful way to close your presentation with realized success. First of all you will need to have a properly crafted title that will entice your audience to listen intently form the onset of your presentation. In other words your title needs to be a solution to which the audience’s issue. A good example would be “These Five Secrets are Guaranteed Hook your Audience at the Beginning of your Presentation” This is a solution to a problem. The second thing people fail to do is close out their presentation. What I mean by this is actually summarizing your presentation and tying it back to the solution (title). This is very important to reassure audience “buy in”. These are just a few areas of presentation skills training that can enhance your public speaking skills to be a more effective presenter.
