Why you should not move your piano yourself

Many people are often of the opinion that all moving jobs can be easily done. After all how difficult can it be to move a piano right? All you need to do is put it on a dolly and roll it down the steps, into a moving truck and up to the new place. Fact is that a lot can go wrong here. Pianos are pretty unstable instruments and need very little to throw them off. You may be able to get the piano on the dolly till the top of the stairs, but once you tip it over to slide it further down, you will see that all the weight shifts and it takes very little for it to slide completely out of your control.

If a piano does start to fall on the staircase, there is a lot of collateral damage that can take place. It can tear through walls and electrical on the way down. It can damage the staircase. Pianos are very heavy instruments and just the console alone can weigh anywhere close to 300 and 500 pounds. In the case of full size pianos this can go up to 700 pounds to 1000 pounds. Grand pianos of the concert variety can vary in weight up to a whopping 1300 points. In such cases, it is a huge amount of inert weight that has to be moved. Its not the question of using strong muscled men, but rather using the right kind of equipment and this is only going to be present with the professionals.
What they will attempt to do is visit your home and the new location. Based on this they will chart out a course and what is needed to move the piano. If it has to be taken down floors and there is no freight elevator, they will have to look at hoisting it out of a window or door. Once it is brought to the moving truck, it will have to be in air controlled climate to protect the tuning and material. It will also have to be weighed down with a piano blanket and strapped to the sides. All of these tasks can only be done by professionals and the job is best left to them.
