Small entrepreneurs are springing up everywhere. From those wishing to be self sufficient to those simply wanting to break away from the reins and control of their employers and thus starting on their own, there has been a definite increase in the number of people running their own small yet independent firms.
Most of these small companies however have been set up with limited funds and resources, more often than not out of the individual’s savings and are thus subject to cost cutting and running daily activities with minimal expenses.
One of the main areas that entrepreneurs target for cost reduction is marketing. While some understand the importance of investing in a marketing plan for the purpose of increasing business, most others consider it as an unnecessary expense.
Whether or not a comprehensive and elaborate marketing plan is necessary for a small firm is debatable, what is not however, is the need to have a basic company website. Any business, big or small must invest in a simple yet well designed website. Listed below are some reasons explaining why all firms, especially smaller start ups must get a professional designed website, preferably as soon as the business is up and running.
• Point of Contact – Small businesses, especially newer set ups need a point of contact for customers. Websites provide contact information, thus offering a permanent and stable visiting card. These firms need not rely on attracting customers solely on the basis of their physical stores or the numbers provided in the directory. It is also far easier for a customer to log onto the website and get comprehensive details like the number, location, email etc.
• Competition- Bigger players get noticed easily because of the funds they spend on marketing and creating awareness. Smaller firms may not have the funds to market aggressively but a website will at least make them visible in the virtual world alongside competitors. A website is the firm’s most basic and cost effective solution for staying at par with its competition.
• Reputation- A website is extremely crucial for cross checking a firm’s reputation and genuineness. There are many shady businesses that are run with fake contact details. Telephone numbers may be wrong or not exist but if a website exists, there is a good chance that it is genuine because a fake company with a website comes with the fear of being traced and found by technology experts.
• Walk-ins- Customers browsing through the net can chance upon the company’s website and become aware of its products and services. Especially those looking for that particular product category via search engines. The engines will most likely throw up the company’s website and this will in turn ensure that new customers are being targeted.
• Display- Every firm, especially product based will need to display its goods and sometimes due to space constraints, this may be a little difficult. A website will ensure that all the firm’s products are displayed well visually through images and without any restrictions.
