Usually made from grapes, wine is an alcoholic beverage produced by going through a fermentation process which commonly uses fruit juice. Among the most common fruit widely used is the grapes. With the help of certain kinds of yeast, it devours the fruit sugar then converts it to alcohol. Apple and plum are also common fruit wines. Starch-based ingredients are also used, such as rice and barley.

The use of wine dated way back to 8000 BC, which also played a vital role in religious ceremonies. It first appeared in Europe and has been widespread in Ancient Greece. Wine has been considered a kitchen staple, which inspired a lot of European and Mediterranean-style cuisines. It is used in cooking but not valued as a beverage, but as a flavor enhancer. One important thing to consider when using wine in cooking – never use the kind you would not drink. If you do not like the wine, you will most likely not appreciate the dish at all.

Several studies conducted have consistently displayed the positive result of wine-drinking, which reduces cardiovascular-related deaths. Though just like any other alcoholic beverages, overconsumption has unfavorable effects. The health benefits of red wine have been found to be higher compared to white wine, as some studies suggest. Polyphenols, a substance greatly found in red wine, are thought to protect the body from cardiovascular diseases. The anti-aging effect of red grape skin was also accounted for. However, there are also some benefits credited to white wine. The antioxidant in white wine was noted to improve lung function.

Taking it in moderation is the key. Though you haven’t noticed it, there is more to wine than a beverage to enjoy. Moderate wine consumption suggested a list of other health benefits, so that is something to take note of the next time you have a glass, and enjoy. A glass of wine a day should be enough to reap these benefits.
