RJ Reynolds is one of the largest tobaco manufacturer in the US. It was founded in 1874 in Winston-Salem by R.J.Reynolds. To start his own tobacco company RJ sold his shares in his father’s company, moved to Winston-Salem and bought the first building for the future factory. In the first year of its existance RJR produced 150,000 pounds of tobacco. By 1890 the production volume was millions of pounds. Moreover, RJR had the largest and the most innovative tobacco company in Winston-Salem with steampower enegines and electricity.
At the beginning of the 20th century RJR bought out most of the competition producing 25% of chewing tobacco in America. The company also invested in its base-town and its employees building the whole neiborghood in Winston-Salem and selling the houses to company employees at cost value. In 1907 Prince Albert chewing tobacco became RJR’s showcase product leading to its aggressive (at that time) advertising campaign in Union Square, New York.
RJR’s most popular cigarettes was Camel introduced in 1913. A lot of time has passed since then, the company grew, evolved and launched new products. Now RJ Reynolds is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Reynolds American Inc., 42% of which is owned by the British American Tobacco.
Winston cigarette brand has a very large base of group manufacturing companies, who participate in the manufacturing of the brand either parent company R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company or its new group Company RJR Nabisco and its licensed affiliates.
In 1954, Reynolds Tobacco introduced Winston – the first filter cigarette to achieve a major success in the marketplace, the Winston cigarette achieved the best selling classic cigarettes status in the United States. It remained at the No. 1 position during the period 1966 to 1972, all due to the successful marketing and using appealing slogans true to it’s values.
Winston is famously recognized for its latest product feature of being "additive free" In 1980s, Winston cigarettes achieved the most famous brand status in Puerto Rico, possibly due to marketing strategies and coined slogans focused on the local population. The Winston brand enjoys cultural ties with "salsa sensual" or "salsa erotica" movement.
Another factor that contributed to this huge success was rather aggressive ad campaign with a slogan "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should". The slogan evoked a wave of debates over its ungrammaticality – using "like" instead of "as". Some TV hosts and presenters refused to utter this phrase because of that.
For the period 1972-2003, Winston has been title sponsor of the premier-level of NASCAR, the Winston Cup Series presently known as the Sprint Cup Series.
Recently in 2008 Winston changed its pack design removing "additive free" from the text and color coding its Light and Ultra-Light versions. Currently, Winston brand is rated sixth in the US. CigarettesPub.com is a licensed distributor of Winston Duty Free and cigaretes. The company brings you the finest brands produced in UK, Switzerland and France.
