They earned the support of the Rajputs kings during the Indian mutiny of 1857 and during the First World War. But once India gained independence and became the world’s largest democracy, rule of monarchy was destined to end. One by one, all the princely states of Rajputana signed the instrument of accession in return for annual privy purses and certain other privileges. The state was restructured and acquired the new name Rajasthan by the end of 1956, which can be explored with the help of Rajasthan cultural tour. The royal princes all over India received another serious blow some years later, when their privy purses were abolished and the favors accorded to them were also withdrawn.
