Physical activity usually makes you lose weight when coupled with a healthy diet and it has long been known what the benefits of regular exercise are. Aside from its benefits for the body such as reduction of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity, exercise has also been found to improve mental health according to new studies.

During this year’s Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, several studies presented the benefits of exercise in preventing cognitive impairments among the elderly. Studies conducted in Japan, Canada and the United States presented the different benefits of exercise for mental health. They studied the impact of various types of exercise such as aerobics, weight lifting and balancing and stretching.

The results of the studies revealed that exercise indeed can improve the mental functioning of people. Even low-impact exercises such as walking can yield desirable results in the cognitive abilities of elderly individuals. In fact, the brains of elderly people seem to grow and develop during later years in life if properly stimulated both physically and mentally.

Among the different types of exercise, strength training had the most positive effects in terms of memory and attention. It also aids in the improvement of higher brain functions such as coordination and sensory functions.

Although exercise benefits most individuals, those who have higher levels of education as well as intellect had the most significant results. People who are innately intelligent will develop more improvement in the mental functioning following regular exercise.

Despite the results, researchers indicated that there is really no clear picture as to how exercise can improve the mental functioning of individuals. However, they clearly pointed out that even the aging brain has the ability to modify and improve, which means that elderly individuals should begin an exercise program such as walking to reverse the effects of aging in the brain.

Another study presented in the conference was about the effect of walking as a normal daily function on the health of the elderly. The study found that mental decline can also be manifested by a slower gait. This further indicates that as a person slows down in their physical functioning, the mental abilities also possibly decline.

In this regard, maintaining an active lifestyle even during late adulthood years is important. It also implicates that health care providers should focus on the physical activity of elderly patients as much as they focus on their mental well-being.

Although the study focused on studying the elderly, it cannot be denied that younger individuals may also benefit in similar ways from exercise. If you want to reap the benefits of exercise, it would be best to start an exercise program. You can check out TRX Training or Flex Belt, which offer a great way to exercise and maintain a slimmer body as well as maintaining a healthy mentation. Using physical manifestations such as a slower gait and poor coordination in the elderly can be some of the ways to detect Alzheimer’s disease early. Physical activities or exercises are non-invasive and non-aggressive approaches, so undertaking them during later years in life is not contraindicated. The elderly should make sure to undertake exercise programs that fit their abilities such as undertaking low-impact routines rather than high impact exercises.
