People who suffer from joint pains understand how great a burden it is to their general health and to the quality of their life. If your GP, doctor or consultant has advised you to exercise as a form of treatment for your joint problems, then yoga can provide you with an easy, low-impact exercise to regain strength without creating any more pain or discomfort. I personally truly believe, from my many years as an advanced and experienced Yoga Teacher as well as Yoga Trainer that practising yoga is one of the most effective and efficient therapies for basically every type of joint disorder, ranging from say, osteoarthritis to carpel tunnel syndrome. I personally recommend regular yoga sessions for people who suffer from joint discomfort and stiffness as a way of alleviating the pain associated joint problems. During my many years as a yoga instructor, as well as more recently as a yoga teacher training UK, I have picked up and noticed that stretching, strengthening and balancing exercises and more importantly paired with relaxation techniques, reduces soreness and improve both movement and one’s gripping ability. Regular yoga sessions will also encourage the healthy functioning of all of your body's systems. They can substantially help to clean up and boost your immune system, the inflammatory nerves and pathways, as well as the circulatory system, which are all typically involved in joint issues. Your yoga teacher course includes different yoga postures that will work with every joint in your body. Your postures will move every muscle in your body and that means fluids in the body (especially the lymph gland) moves. That is cleansing, energising and restoring. Through yoga, you can also improve your overall general health and wellbeing, both physically and indeed emotionally too. Regardless of where you live, whether it be in the centre of a city, or in a very remote corner of the country you will always be able to find a local yoga class near to where you live without fail. With joint-pain conditions I would advise that you find a class that is more tuned towards a more gentle and restorative form of yoga rather than some of the more vigorous types that are available. However whilst yoga is known to be a great treatment for arthritis and general joint problems, you must also address these issues medically with your doctor. Until you do that, I can only suggest gentle yoga sessions. In time you will eventually be able to move towards more challenging yoga classes and continue to improve and bring your body into balance. Yoga will direct you to become attuned to your body, and to allow then to take it slowly during the treatment and recovery process. Send me your name and email. I will send you a link to another wonderful posture you can do to work with your spine, shoulders and hips. sam@samraoyoga.com
