As a professional yoga teacher, you may be able to think of a long list of good reasons why you should not have to purchase yoga liability insurance. However, none of those reasons really matter when this simple fact exists: accidents happen. Remember, a core piece of your yoga liability insurance policy is general liability insurance, which is there to provide coverage in case a client has an accident of some kind on the property of your yoga practice. Just like any other business or service provider that does business with members of the public, where members of the public come onto the property of the business, yoga teachers need protection from the rare but possible occurrence of an accident. For example, imagine that a client happens to trip on her way into your session room, and the trip results in a broken ankle. If that client decides to file a claim against you for the damages, you will need the general liability portion of your yoga teacher liability insurance policy to provide the coverage you need. Fortunately, the cost for a high quality yoga teacher liability insurance policy is quite low, most likely due to the fact that the odds of a client filing a claim against his or her reiki therapist are relatively low as well. This means that for less than a couple hundred dollars per year—usually a tax deductible expense—you can have the protection and peace of mind of yoga liability insurance. Along with the general liability coverage, a solid yoga liability insurance policy should also offer you several other forms of protection and perhaps a few extra benefits as well. Among the other kinds of liability coverage you should get with your yoga liability insurance are malpractice liability insurance and product liability insurance. The first, malpractice liability insurance, is also known as professional liability insurance. This portion of your yoga liability insurance policy is designed to provide coverage in case a client ever files a claim against you for damage or injury due to a lack of skill or competence on your part as the teacher. The second, product liability insurance, is coverage for any cases where a client might sue you for damage or injury due to some sort of product used during the yoga session. This may be where your long list of good reasons not to have yoga liability insurance kicks in, because it is obviously difficult to imagine a modality such as yoga or any of the tools associated with reiki resulting in damage or injury to a client. However, you should simply be grateful for the extra components of liability coverage that come with your yoga liability insurance, even if you do not foresee ever putting these pieces of your policy into use. It is also important to realize that a client may perceive damage or injury during a yoga session, even if none actually occurred. Worse, some clients may try to play the legal system for cash by making up such a claim. In either case, you would want a yoga insurance program on your side to see you through the legal process.
