There are many health-related questions on the mind of a recently quit smoker (that’s probably why they quit, naturally). On that regularly occurs to most newly smoking-free people is; I’ve quit, so what is the next step to improving my health? Boosting your Immune System is one activity from which you can often get quick and tangible results. Now if you’re not sure what your Immune System is, here's a lay-person’s description. Your Immune System is a complex system of ‘cells’ that can recognise self (cells that are part of you) and non-self (cells that are foreign, or have be subverted by foreign agents), and that defend you from the outside world, which is more likely than not to cause you damage these days. It’s like your bodies 'defense forces.' It will intercept any foreign invaders such as bacteria, fungi, and parasites, kill off cells that have been subverted by viruses, and help with the defense and repair of damaged organs, like your tar effected lungs. The immune system is a key component for accelerating lung detoxification, so it pays to do as much as you can to boost it. If you've smoked for any decent length of time, the immune function in your lungs will be lacking. Just like your lungs, your bodies' protection and healing mechanisms in and around your lungs have been disrupted by your habit, and it needs all the boosting it can get to successfully defend your recovering lung cells. So it's clear that a strong Immune System is vitally important to better lung, and general health.
