Are You a Jellyfish Or A Hound Dog?

Say what?! I know . . . I have a point. Think about it.

Though jellyfish swim sometimes, they mostly just float around the ocean, dependent upon the currents to carry them. They don't have any direction in mind, they just . . . float.

On the other hand, once a hound dog catches a scent, he becomes single-minded, determined to catch his prey. So, I ask you again . . . which one would you say you are most like?

This little illustration shows the difference between someone who lives life intentionally and someone who doesn't.

Plans are nothing; planning is everything. ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower

Think of it this way, successful outcomes are always the result of planning. All sports, battles and weddings, just to name a few things, require planning. What would happen if nobody planned these things? If they didn't use systems and plans to reach their goal?

Why then do we think that our lives can, or should, be lived without an action plan? Once most people graduate from college and get a job, they are done planning. They end up like jelly fish, just floating along through life.

Trying To Develop An Action Plan Without A Goal Is Like Building A House Without House Plans

Here is the catch I think. Most people don't know what the heck they want in life! Or maybe they are afraid of setting goals because they have a fear of failure, among other things.

An action plan isn't something we should be afraid of. It turns our dreams into realities.

You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going because you might not get there.~ Yogi Berra

When we are kids we know what we want to do when we grow up, right? What kind of house we want to live in, and sometimes who we want to marry! But seriously, what happens when we grow up? We stop dreaming for some reason. Let's get dreaming again and create an action plan to obtain our dreams!

Make a list of personal goals, make them crystal clear. Clear enough to be able to see them in your mind's eye consistently. This is the first very important step in creating your action plan. Make sure though, that they are attainable goals, dependent upo
YOUR actions. Sorry, winning the lottery is not a goal!

Once you know what you want, figure out what exactly you need to do to get there, step by step. This is why your goal needs to be exceedingly clear. As humans, we tend to only work as hard as we have to. You need a goal that will burn in your heart. Something that will carry you through the times that you don't want to work your plan.

If I had 6 hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend four sharpening the axe. ~ Abraham Lincoln

goalWhat Are Your Plans?

There is a lot out there about the steps to creating an action plan. Essentially, you figure out:

Where am I now?
Where do I want to be?
How do I get there?
Take action to get there.
Check in again . . . where am I now.
Another way to look at it, create an outcome you want, have a plan for it, and work your ass off. Rinse and repeat. It's simple, but not easy.

Most people aren't successful or happy with their lives because they won't commit to doing what it takes.

Just as businesses have vision and mission statements that guide them, why not have a personal vision and mission statement? In this way you can live a life of purpose. Most of us vaguely know what we stand for, though we have never written it down. We have never made it a real foundational part of our lives.

When you tie it all together, bringing our vision, mission and action plan, we can have or do anything we truly want.
