Workers compensation insurance takes care of employees if they are involved in any kind of work related injury. In the United States it is mandatory for businesses to provide this kind of coverage for their employees. If employees are injured, the policy pays for medical expenses and lost wages. Although this coverage is required by law, it provides important protection for businesses, also. Some businesses may see workers compensation insurance or WCI as a necessary evil. However, it is more than just an additional business expense. A good policy benefits the employer as well as the employee, and here are a few reasons why. If your business operates in several areas of the country, proper coverage is important. Your employees may occasionally need to travel to other states or locations. If they are to become injured while working for you, they are protected by your WCI policy. This is especially important for special event insurance protection. This commonly covers for property damage, but also liability. Liability protection is important for all businesses. This is especially important for small business, as one legal claim could bankrupt a company. Not only that, your legal expenses will be covered by a good WCI policy. There may be a minimum amount of protection, but you can choose to carry more protection. This amount should be adjusted depending on the amount of employees that you have. Another good thing about WCI is payment of lost wages. You are not responsible for paying wages to an employee while off work. In some cases, this can be a substantial amount of money, and can affect the operating expenses of smaller businesses. Without this protection you risk obligating yourself to such payments. If an employee makes a false or inappropriate WCI claim, this will not be your problem. The insurance company will investigate all claims, and if any are suspect, they will take a closer look at them. This is in their best interest, as they are the one paying the costs. And like any other type of insurance fraud they take false claims very seriously. In the case of one the job tragedy, your WCI is a valuable asset. It will pay for death benefits of employees that are killed on the job or in service to your business. This includes things like funeral expenses and providing financial support to the victim's family and dependent children. Without proper coverage death of an employees can be devastating emotionally and financially. When you check into the costs of WCI policies, you may see that they vary a great deal. The reason for this is simple. You have a lot of options, and this is why it is important to understand and explore those options, and not simply buy a policy because you have to. If you live in the United States, it is important to check the state laws where you live. This will give you a better idea of what kind of coverage you should purchase. Occupations that come with more risk will often come at a cost premium, but it’s those lines of work that need the added protection. To sum things up, workers compensation insurance is a vital part of all business. It is required by law, but its purpose is to protect employers as well as employees. You will not have to worry about paying lost wages and medical expenses for employees injured on the job. The policy will also cover legal expenses and death benefits for anyone killed on the job. State laws vary, so it is important to understand them. Regardless of regulatory requirement it’s an absolute must to have this coverage in place to protect you, your business, and most importantly your employees.
