According to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics, about 91 percent of American adults aged 20–64 had cavities in permanent teeth in 2011–2012. With that many Americans with dental cavities, it isn’t surprising that dental fillings are among the most requested cosmetic dentistry procedures in the United States. Dental fillings, to a certain point, are the most effective ways of closing off spaces created by tooth decay, as well preventing it from getting worse.rnThose who go for dental fillings these days are also fortunate in the sense that they can choose from different materials. Here are some of your options for dental filling materials. rnComposite resinrnIf the cavities you want to be filled are those on your front teeth and the visible parts of your teeth, a popular choice would be composite resin fillings. Composite resin fillings, which are made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles, are also tooth-colored. It can bond directly with the tooth as soon as the material hardens with the use of a blue light. One visit is all it takes to get your composite resin fillings, which can last at least five years. Glass ionomerrnDentists typically recommend glass ionomer fillings for young children, as well as for areas below the gum line in adults. While it has similarities with composite resin in terms of look, cost, and lifespan, glass ionomer is less resistant to wear and fracturing. It also does not match the color of teeth the way composite resin does. Glass ionomer, which is made of acrylic and fluoroaluminosilicate, a component of glass, does have one unique characteristic: it releases fluoride, which can help prevent tooth decay from getting worse. CeramicsrnAnother type of dental filling preferred by people who want their fillings to match their teeth are ones made from ceramics. Ceramic fillings are usually made of porcelain, and they are more costly than either composite resin or glass ionomer fillings. Then again, ceramic fillings last longer at seven years, and they are better at resisting staining and abrasion. Ceramic fillings, which can be as pricey as cast gold fillings, are also used for inlays and onlays, crowns, orthodontic brackets, veneers, and implants. Cast goldrnThere is no question that cast gold fillings are more expensive than any of the materials mentioned above. Cast gold fillings are made of gold mixed with other metals and are not for people who want tooth-colored fillings. However, many patients prefer them because they look great and last longer. Dentists say they can last at least 15 years, but many patients have had gold fillings for longer than that, and they’re still serving their purpose. Patients also choose gold cast fillings because gold doesn’t corrode, and it’s better at withstanding the force of chewing. The materials listed above are some of the safer dental filling materials available in most practices. Ask your dentist about each material before settling on the kind of fillings that you think will be best for your current dental situation.
