Kentucky receives its next Triple Crown probable. Zenyatta, the wonder filly of 2010, now a mom delivered Bernardini foal on Thursday 8th March late evening at around 10 at the Lane’s End Farm in Lexinton. The dam and foal are doing just fine, owners Jerry and Ann Moss confirmed. After a much awaited effort, 2010 Horse of the Year and winner of 19 consecutive races, Zenyatta was successfully bred to 2006 Champion Three Year Old, Bernardini last year after a second mating last year. With a picture perfect pedigree, inheriting the speed and stunning stamina of Zenyatta and the winner’s spirit from Bernardini’s genes, it’s little doubt audience wouldn’t rate him already a champ. And with the Rachel Alexandra yearling already making good progress, we should expect some eye-popping rivalry too to match Zenyatta’s role as a deserving successor to the trend set by Rachel Alexandra in 2009. A brief look at the parents, what Zenyatta and her partner Bernardini accomplished as thoroughbreds in their respective careers – As a racehorse, Zenyatta’s career was more than a miraculous one lined with record breaking races and exemplary performances. Despite been faced with other contenders from the fraction of horses with similar racing calibre, of Grade 1 and Grade 2 level, Zenyatta pulled off a thoroughly deserving 19 consecutive wins, and was also recognized fitting for Secretariat’s Vox Populi Award. She became her trainer, John Shirreffs most commendable creation. Referred to as “Queen”, Zenyatta entered the winner’s circle race after race, demolishing fields comprising of fillies and male contenders alike, including the Breeder’s Cup Classic in 2009 and a close second by a head to Blame in the same race in 2010. Though the Bernardini progeny is already creating ripples in the world racing with Alpha as a top Derby choice giving Hansen already a run for his money. While Bernardini has begun reaping the fruit of success as a sire, he also boasted of a more than impressive racing career. Though Bernardini’s starts comprise of only eight races, he won the Preakness, icing on his multiple graded stakes wins. Triple Crown has not been won since 1978 now, so anticipating a similar calibre from the sires of the generation would be a no-brainer. However, whether or not the fresh new progeny starring this year and those to come would make it to the Triple Crown is nothing more than a question; pedigrees like that of Zenyatta or Rachel Alexander sure seems promising. Thoroughbred racing is a researched and well-learnt profession and category of sport where thoroughbred raising and their breeding require extensive knowledge regarding the genetic lineage and bloodline compatibilities and not just a mere mix-n-match. In the past, legendary thoroughbreds have bore the brunt of bad choices, most distinguishably Ruffian who inherited the weak bones from both her sire and dam and eventually was met with an end that was a consequence to injuries to her weak and brittle bones. With Zenyatta and Rachel Alezandra foal stealing the limelight for the season’s top and most anticipated yearlings; let’s hope for a healthy and extravagant future for both the aspiring foals.
