How To Build Your Coaching Practice

We think coaches are great. We believe everyone should have them. In fact, even having been named “among the best coaches in the nation,” we still hire coaches ourselves. So it goes without saying that many of our clients are coaches, too. It sounds easy: Know what you know, share it with others to grow their lives and businesses, and you have a career, right? Not so fast. To have a profitable coaching practice, just being good at what you do is not sufficient.

WHY WE DID THIS SERIES: HOW DO I FIND MY LIFE’S PURPOSE?

As motivational speakers and mentors, one of the most common questions we hear is, “How do I find my life’s purpose?” The answer is simply that we all have one unifying purpose. Our purpose is to teach each other and to protect each other. That’s it. From an evolutionary perspective, if we didn’t teach each other, we would never grow as a society. If we did not protect each other, we would all be killed off by circumstance, the elements, or each other. We are all called to do this: teach and protect.

YOUR ENTOURAGE MATTERS.

Today, we are moving on to another category in our Building Your Legacy series: Friends & Colleagues. As we’ve said before, these are in no particular order of importance. We’ll spend plenty of time talking about your Career, your Health, your Finances, your Faith & Love, your Family, and the other categories. But for now, let’s get a few things clear about your friends and colleagues. If you have not yet read our blog post about “When and How to Un-Friend” yet, now would be the perfect time - check it out on our website.

FAMILY MATTERS.

We are moving to the Family Category today. (Yes, even posted a pic from a favorite family weekend of Aly’s here). We were tempted to jump into the Career or Financial Category, but we want to cover Family first because when you begin to shape your career brand, you will want to first be clear on all the other priorities that matter to you. That way, you will be projecting to customers what you do (and don’t) stand for. You’ll be projecting your “Why” above and beyond your products and services, and THAT is proven to sell more.

On Being Joyful

Well, you knew we couldn’t have yesterday’s post, “On Being Sad,” without having today’s post: On Being Joyful. That’s because when “Sad” happens, it is in large part as a consequence of our circumstances. Something has occurred, or some one has behaved in a way that perhaps brought sadness. But when Joy happens, it is because we emit it from within…and shine it outward.

AND THE GREATEST OF THESE….IS LOVE

The need to love and be loved is one of the 6 basic human needs we teach about in our Heart & Sold series. Because the need to love and be loved is so fundamental to humanity, it often explains the motivations behind our behaviors. We act in certain ways…. we do and don’t do things often for the payoff of either experiencing love or experiencing validation by giving love to others.

Leading a Visionary Life Does Not Require Eyesight

Andrea has another eye surgery next month. This one is unique because it will be to remove a cataract that is progressing in her left eye….the only eye that she has any vision in. Typical cataract surgery is routine, but Andrea’s other conditions and eyesight limitations make this surgery anything but routine. She is vulnerable. If all goes perfectly, she will have 20/400 vision in that eye at best, and still total darkness from her right eye. If not, she will go from being a legally blind person to being a totally blind person.

Have and Have Not... What We Should Have Learned in First Grade

When Andrea taught first grade, her students would often jostle for the coveted position at the front of the line. Anyone that was “less than” first in line would complain about their position. This is what seven-year-olds do. And guess what? It doesn’t change much as we grow into adults. We live in a world where even the most humble people sometimes look around and take note of what others around them “have” or “don’t have.” We are certain you can go to a store somewhere and purchase a premium quality iWant, or a fancy new iWish, or even better yet, an awesome new iEnvy.

7 Reasons Why You Should Just Say No

You know what its like. You’re racing around the office to get that last stack tackled- yes, the one that your boss just handed you 5 minutes ago, even though you needed to be driving home 10 minutes ago. As you race, two colleagues fly in and ask “if you have just a minute” to review the 43 page report they are working on. “Well, actually I have to get to my son’s baseball g…” you say/gulp at the same time. That’s your “I’d-like-to-help-and-I-feel-bad-but,” reply. “Oh, it’ll just take a second.”

Self Help: When and How to Un-Friend in Your Life

We are not beating around the bush today. If you want your business to limitlessly grow to both big profits and big fulfillment, you have to start with what makes you joyful. Including the people around you. So we gotta’ ask: Why are you agonizing over that consuming “friendship” that exists in your life right now? Why are you trying to figure out how that relationship went wrong, or how you can make it right?

Give it Up: Converting Free Consults Into Paying Clients

We sometimes offer free coaching sessions for particular group members, promotions, etc. If we didn’t convert them to paying clients, we’d lose buckets of time and money by giving away freebies. So its our job to serve them, and convert them, so they can continue to grow their businesses purposefully, efficiently, and in a big way. If you offer complimentary sessions, or trials, for potential clients in hopes of converting them into paid clients, you need to hear this. If you don’t offer them yet, you may just change your mind after this.

BACKING INTO THE MONEY

We’re still in the Career category of the Building Your Legacy Series, so today is going to be fun! Why? Because we are talking about money and how to make it! This, perhaps surprisingly, is one of the most neglected conversations we see with women entrepreneurs. But we’re going to be clear here: Just because you “love what you do” or you are “so passionate about it,” doesn’t mean you should do it for free! And it certainly doesn’t mean you should take a loss! We are all in business to make money. Period.

The List About You.

We have a critical message for you today. It will take you 60 seconds to read it. Don’t say there’s not enough time. For you or someone else (share it), this message will be life-changing. A few truths we’d like to remind you of: Asking to get paid when you’ve earned it is not “greedy”. Resting when your body needs it is not “lazy”. Making mistakes is not “dumb”. Being afraid is not “chicken”. Being proud of yourself is not “arrogant”. Sharing your natural gifts and talents doesn’t make you “self-centered”. Having money doesn’t make you “selfish”.

On Being Sad

The funeral was Friday. Perhaps you read our last post, so you knew it was coming. We knew it was coming, too, after a 15 month battle with cancer…but it was still beyond painful. Our dearest friend of nearly 30 years is gone. He was 39 and leaves behind a 16 year old son and a 9 year old daughter. My husband was a pallbearer and I spoke at the funeral–perhaps the most difficult 10 minute talk I’ll ever give. There is no other word to describe what its been like around here. Its just Sad. We are sad. The circumstance is sad. The story is sad. Everything about it is sad. And that’s ok.

YA GOTTA’ HAVE FAITH

Circling back to the Faith category in our Building Your Legacy series. If you have been riding along in the series, you already spent time a few days ago defining what role faith would play in your life. It was a highly personal reflection, and we hope that you did not let any one or society sway what you worked on. Again, this is not about what anyone else thinks you should do/don’t do or think/don’t think. This is your legacy and no one else’s.

It’s Not About Your Circumstances, Already!

I’m not waiting for the circumstances to get better. I’m simply using them as stepping stones through rough water. See, the break in our blog posts lately have not been without reason. On the trail of Andrea’s journey with her prosthetic eye, this week has set off yet another series of jou eys. I’ve spent the last 14 months watching my best friend from high school bravely fight cancer, which has now spread from his kidney to his spine and this week, to his lungs. Our dad had surgery three days ago for prostate cancer.r

Turn Victim into Victorious

You are not a victim. The word itself is defined as “something or someone harmed by an act or circumstance.” The word is one of our least favorite words in the English language because it implies such helplessness. In the case of a violent crime victim, for example, the very idea puts our stomach in knots because it is innocent helplessness. For the purposes of our discussion, however, we mean to say that we must chose to never be a victim after the experience cards have been dealt.

The Letter

Dear Incredible You, Yes, you. The one reading this. We are just stopping by to remind you how beautiful you are. No matter what circumstances exist, and no matter what others say, you are beyond beautiful. Your imperfections and the times you failed are what make you that way. See, your imperfections are the things that make your natural gifts and talents stand out. They are what make you uniquely you. The times you failed are the challenges that keep making you smarter with time. Your wisdom astonishes us every day because it keeps us growing.

How to Stay Motivated

It might be the number one question we are asked. “How do I stay motivated when I have all this bad stuff happening?” Its code for: “How do I get happy when everything is crappy?” One of the most difficult things about obstacles in your life is that they are often have the appearance of being endless. They are not.
