Pompeii - A Tourist Perspective

Pompeii is an ancient city located at the bottom of Mount Versuvius near the city of Naples in Italy. It became an active and prosperous port and town around 80 BC. The city was first occupied by Etruscans in 8th century BC followed by the Saminites and then Romans who took control around 200 BC. The town was well advanced with Villas, Temples, Theatres, Cobbled Streets, Stores and Public Baths. The town was a popular resort for vacation villas.

A History of the Rio Carnival

The word Carnival is derived from the Italian word ‘Carnevale’ and Medieval Latin ‘Carne levamen’ meaning ‘put away flesh’ as during Lent when flesh eating was considered taboo. Initially the church was against the reveling and tried to stop participation. Believers ignored the church and eventually the Carnival became accepted as an outlet to indulge in pleasure for the 4 days of the festival before observing Lent.

A History of the Calgary Stampede

In 1884 Calgary became home to 500 people and was incorporated as a town. They formed the Calgary and District Agricultural Society who produced the first fair in 1886. The Society purchased 94 acres on the Elbow River and developed the site with a race track, cattle sheds and an exhibition building and this site has been the site of the Calgary Exhibition ever since. In 1908 the site was improved with a roofed grandstand, an exhibits building, barns and a livestock exhibits building. In 1911 a new livestock and horse show arena was built and a new betting system was introduced.

Kejimkujik National Park was established in 1967 and covers 381 sq kms in the western interior of Nova Scotia. The park is an inland wilde ess with forest streams, lakes and islands. The wildlife and flora are abundant due to the high rainfall in the area, often flooding the streams and lakes in the spring. Glaciers once occupied this area. As they retreated they left behind huge granite boulders, shallow soil, and craters where the lakes have formed today.

The Aftermath of the Halifax Explosion & Vincent Coleman Railway Dispatcher

The explosion on December 6 1917 at 7.30am between the French ship Mont-Blanc and the Norwegian vessel Imo left the north end of the city of Halifax in ruins and chaos. An official enquiry was opened a few days later. The captain and pilot of the Mont-Blanc and the naval commanding officer were charged with manslaughter. These charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence proving gross negligence.

Alexander Graham Bell Museum - Baddeck - Nova Scotia - Canada

Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) was the inventor of the telephone and was also known for his education of the deaf. Bell first visited Cape Breton in 1885 and set up a vacation home, known at Beinn Bhreagh, the following year.
