***Connecting the Awe and Inspiration of Flight to Healing Others

“In my life, one thing always leads to another without a lot of planning. I just let life flow.” That’s how 26-year vetera US Airways commercial pilot, Susan Maule, explains her highly creative life. Currently a First Officer on transatlantic Airbus 330 flights to Europe and the Middle East, she has flown over 100 different types of aircraft in her career. When she’s on the ground, however, she may be coaxing soft, melodic tones from one of her Native American flutes or skillfully wielding her tuning forks to bring harmony and balance to a client’senergetic body. ***The Retirement Curse!

As boomers, many of us are retired or thinking of retiring. One of the things that may happen when one retires is that every day becomes a weekend. I have a retired friend that proclaims that every day is Saturday except for “fat paper day” which is Sunday. So he has six Saturdays each week. This sounds like it would be awesome; however, one of the real risks of retirement is alcoholism. With so much extra time to socialize those of us who have an occasional drink on the weekend now have a life full of Saturdays!

***Take Two and Call Me in the Morning

As part of a multi-disciplinary medical team, I often see patients who have been taking medications to treat musculo-skeletal disorders (muscle aches, tight muscles, tingling and numbness in the arms or legs, etc.) for several weeks. Many of these patients have been ingesting acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, known as NSAIDs. Examples of NSAIDs are aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen sodium (Aleve).

***Are You, Empty Nester And Boomer, OK With Floating In Life?

I think most of us push ourselves too hard to do something when clarity hasn’t arrived. Parents call me tearful that they can’t get over the emptiness. Who is rushing you? Do you think if you float that might bring you something you didn’t even realize had value? A mother, who now lives solo, since her children are married and she is divorced, was ready to explore what might be possible for her that would bring new meaning to her life. Her mind chattered away daily at her to do something, snap out of it, get a life already.

Faith is active.” Edith Hamilton When the world around you appears dark and ominous, faith can be your beacon of light. ***Numbers Don’t Lie … or Do They?

A.T. "Al" Benelli, CFP, FIC Recently our government released figures showing that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of our nation rose by 3.5 percent — the first increase in five calendar quarters. The Dow Industrial average rose 200 points as various pundits declared the end of the worst recession since 1929. In Washington, partisan politicians cheered and claimed, “We fixed it!” — but did they? Is the economy back on track? At first glance, the numbers seem to say so, but a closer look is certainly warranted before we crank up the celebration.

***Hope is a Renewable Resource

Submitted by Boomer-Living.com, the Official Guide to Baby Boomers Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” Albert Einstein Where does hope come from? And where can I get more of it – you might ask. Hope comes from your desire to seek a better future. It can come from the realization and acceptance that you cannot do it alone combined with the courage to reach out. Hope can come from reaching out to God to help guide you on your path – from out of the darkness and into the light. Hope can lift you out of sadness and help you focus on a new beginning. Or a renewal.

***A 10-Step Approach to Avert Calamitous Conflict

Feedback from students in the course I teach at Villanova, titled Managing the Intergenerational Workforce, once again supports my contention that: 1) most employers are either oblivious to or in denial about the historic impact of four dominant generations in the workforce, and 2) transformational changes in public and corporate policies are needed to avert seismic intergenerational conflict over jobs, pay, benefits and advancement opportunities.

***Intergenerational Conflict in the US Workforce

For the first time in history, we have four – some people argue five – generations in the workforce: the Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y. The normal stresses in the workplace are being exacerbated by the fact that the leading edge of the 79 millio Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 are not moving out of the workforce as expected. The likely result will be increasing conflict among the generations over jobs, pay, benefits and advancement opportunities.

***Justice Served

written by Neal Dranoff Being a 50 plus male and having “been around the block” a few times engenders a requisite amount of seasoning. By this age, naiveté has pretty much flown out the window and we feel like life has few surprises left to offer. Even devoid of having personally experienced a given situation, we’re so bombarded with others’ tales through our profusion of media outlets that we at least think we can easily wrap our hands around a remedy should we ever find ourselves as a principal. Or so I thought…
