Omega 3 Fatty Acids Prevent Serious Mental Health Problems

The use of atypical anti-psychotic medication to treat and prevent serious mental health problems such as schizophrenia is barbaric and causes severe adverse health effects including sexual dysfunction, obesity, and diabetes. A new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted between 2004 and 2007 shows that fish oil may well be the answer. The study involved 81 individuals, ages 13-25 years of age, considered at very high risk for developing extreme mental health problems such as psychosis or schizophrenia.

Omega 3 Oils Slow Aging by Preserving Telomeres

Omega 3 oils, especially DHA, are routinely in the headlines for their extensive science demonstrating the ability to reduce heart disease, lower triglycerides, improve brain function, help weight management, and reduce the chronic low-grade inflammation associated with virtually any disease of aging.

Low Iron Can Cause Chronic Pain

A new discovery about the need for iron in your brain stem (where pain registers) opens the door for an additional approach to chronic pain that may be of immense benefit to many people who are currently suffering. It has been proposed for a number of years that one cause of restless legs syndrome is low iron.

New Science Questions Theory of Antidepressant Drugs

Eva Redei, David Lawrence Stein Professor of Psychiatry at Northwestern’s Feinberg School, has presented a study that throws a monkey wrench in the scientific rationale that is used to justify giving out antidepressant medication. She has clearly demonstrated, for the first time, that genes involved with stress are different from genes involved with depression.

Using Nutrition to Help Perceive and Combat Swine Flu

There is valid conce that the H1N1 swine flu will readily infect Americans this flu season, resulting in high numbers of swine flu cases around the country. Already the CDC is reporting significant swine flu symptoms and swine flu cases in all states. This is because this new version of the flu hasn’t been around any time recently, meaning that our immune systems don’t have a memory of it and prior training in dealing with it. This does not automatically mean this is a major problem.

Laughable Type II Diabetes Research Shines Light on Medical Ineptitude

The ability of Western medicine to treat an epidemic of type II diabetes in America shows the gross incompetence of their collective profession. Granted, type II diabetes is a tough problem because it means the natural regulatory systems of the distribution and use of calories is broken. However, if doctors can’t help solve tough problems then what good are they? There is a tremendous amount of health care dollars at stake.

Overweight People Need Extra Antioxidants for Exercise

Overweight people are routinely told to exercise more. However, a study in overweight adolescent girls shows that exercise increases free radical stress due to the inefficient utilization of extra oxygen during the exercise process. This means that exercise in the presence of a lack of antioxidants will increase tissue damage and consequent inflammation, resulting in a poor response to exercise that is unlikely to produce fitness or weight loss.

A Surprise Finding: Endothelial Cells Rejuvenate Your Liver

Your liver is the “brain of your body” and its healthy function is required for your ongoing well being. Your liver is potentially damaged by pollution, excess alcohol, medications, street drugs, internal “plumbing” problems, and excess food. For the first time, a process by which your liver can regenerate itself has been identified. As it turns out the endothelial cells1 lining the circulatory system within your liver orchestrate the rejuvenation process.

Sirtuin1 During Calorie Restriction – Application for Weight Management

Sirtuin1 is a longevity gene that is activated during times of food scarcity. It enables metabolism and your brain to maintain a higher level state of function. The activation of this gene by eating less food is central to the anti-aging theory of calorie restriction. The sirtui 1 gene is also activated by the nutrient resveratrol. A novel animal study is proving new insights on how this gene works.

Avandia and Actos Increase Fracture Risk

The often-prescribed diabetic medications Avandia and Actos have now been proven to cause an increase risk in fractures in postmenopausal women. In men if these drugs are combined with a potassium-robbing diuretic, then the fracture risk is also increased. The FDA is currently considering whether to remove Avandia from the market because it causes heart attacks. Actos is not as bad as Avandia on the heart attack issue. However, Actos is equally as bad as Avandia on the fracture issue.

Human Study Proves Resveratrol Lowers Inflammatory Gene Signaling

A common dietary supplement form of resveratrol, taken at the relatively low dose of 40 mg per day for 6 weeks, could turn down the primary inflammatory gene signal known as NF-kappaB and consequently lower key markers of inflammation such as TNFa, IL6, and C-reactive protein. Since the inflammatory problem is underlying the deteriorating health of just about anyone, including the process of accelerated aging, this human study data is

High-Fat Diet May Adversely Alter Your Brain Structure

In a rather sobering study, scientists have demonstrated that a high-fat diet has the potential to drastically alter the architecture of the brain, resulting in poor circulation within the brain, down-regulated metabolism, and outright brain damage in areas of the brain central to appetite regulation. The implications of the study are that once a person starts eating too much and continues to do so for a period of time they are ind
