Performance - What is it?

PERFORMANCE! I want to talk to you this month about your performances. This is a subject upon which I have spoken before many times; but I am discovering in my practice that once a singer has established firmly the singing fundamentals that are given in "A Voice For A Lifetime in 30 Days", and is ready to start performing regularly, a strange thing begins to occur.

Healthy Inside=Healthy Outside

As I write this, I am acutely aware that some of what I am about to talk about with many you readers will be received by you in a variety of ways. Some of you will welcome a new, (but really not so new) idea, while others will disagree totally. As we age, we pay much attention to our health and well-being. We are encouraged to eat better, exercise, and generally engage ourselves in activities that are health-promoting and considered “good” for us older folks.

Developing your Style!!

Developing Your Style - by Chrys Pager May 8, 2011 It says this on my business card: "Discover the Voice Inside You." Over the weekend, I gave it someone and she asked me what that phrase meant. I thought about it for a sec and told her this. “Well, when we’re learning how to sing, it’s not unusual to try and sound like someone else, usually some singer who we admire and have listened to often. As we grow in technique and confidence, we start to trust our own interpretations of the songs we’re singing and rely less on our ability to simply imitate artists.” She replied:r

Quitting - Its Not An Option

The saddest thing in the world to me is when I hear from a singer who's been on this list for years who tells me that they're quitting singing because it just got too tough, too painful, too disappointing! Oh, that just about breaks my heart. Okay, I see some your eyes rolling back into your ...

Vocal Performance And Cabaret

I want to talk today about the art of Cabaret performance. I need to make an important distinction right now. The concert or stage setting may not be the training ground for performing Cabaret, for I believe that the only way to understand how to connect with the audience is to get closer to ...

New Year, New Plan

So, have you made your resolutions? Everyone I know is making them. "I'm going on a diet", one friend has proclaimed...for the 3rd year in a row. "I'm going to save some money", another friend has stated, one who has been known to shop 'til she drops.

Self-Evaluation vs. Self-Criticism

I've realized something that is quite disturbing about some singers. In the survey we sent last month, many of you said that you did not believe you had talent and you even went on to explain how you hate your voice. As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I didn't buy it for a minute! And now I have discovered something even more confusing. Many singers seem to "fish for compliments" when on the one hand they criticize their own voices and on the other post clips of their sing

Putting Your Career in the Proper Perspectiver

Putting Your Career into Proper PerspectivennBy the time my own career started to take off, I was past 30 and had 2 small children. When I look back now, I think I may have unwittingly put them 2nd, indeed, even neglected them at times. It is a balancing act to go for your dream, "Follow your Bliss", as Joseph Campbell put it, and still be there for your family and friends.
