Types of Water

If asked about types of water, I could probably name three. But there are 8 types of water with differing qualities. Artesian Water, aka artesian well water. Water from a well that taps a confined aquifer, which is a water-bearing underground layer of rock or sand, where the water level stands at some height above the top of the aquifer. Usually this source of water is lower than regular well water, sometimes from the second water layer beneath the surface.

Soapmaking Frequently Asked Questions.

Variety of questions and answers about making soap. If you don't see your question here, contact us and we'll post an answer! Q. Where do I get my soap supplies? A. Where you live will be the difference in how you get your supplies. Most larger cities have a soap making supplier, leaving smaller center people to order supplies by mail. I would do an internet search first, entering 'soap making supplies', then your state or province. This should give you a variety of suppliers. I had about 5 suppliers for most of my ingredients. Some had better prices in different categories.

Food in its Natural State

Raw Food. Perhaps a better name would be natural food. You’ve probably heard about Raw Food, also known as Living Foods and Natural Hygiene. All words, that when first heard, may denote some negative images. Raw Food makes me think of raw meat, Living Foods causes me to think of actually living meat and growing vegetables, and Natural Hygiene has me thinking about natural soap and feminine products. But what it really does mean is eating fruits, vegetables and grains in their natural state, being not cooked and not processed.

Dandelions, Weed Or Remedy?

A definition of a weed is "one that grows profusely where it is not wanted". A weed is not a bad plant, simply an easy growing one. And this one is multipurpose with quite possibly one very important additional purpose. The Dandelion's roots can be ground and roasted as a coffee alte ative and it has more beta-carotene than carrots. The iron and calcium content is phenomenal, greater than spinach. You also get vitamins B-1, B-2, B-5, B-6, B-12, C, E, P, and D, biotin, inositol, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc.

Coconut Oil for Soap Making

Coconut Oil for making soap adds special qualities that not every carrier oil has. Coconut oil will allow a quicker trace, and make a harder and better cleansing bar, with fluffy lather. It is usually combined with other soap making carrier oils such as olive, palm, palm kernel, soy and castor, yet this is the oil that will definitely add those nice big bubbles, even in salt water.

Sea Sponges, plant or animal?

Yes, some sponges are natural, but they are not a plant as most people think. They are an animal, albeit a very simple one. I came across a soap website that had everything I was checking for; totally natural soap and honesty. He also had a paragraph where he attested to no animal testing, all natural ingredients, eco-friendly products. Everything was correct except for his sea sponges. He stated they were from a sustainable farm, with fair trade applications, and not harvested from the wild, which is all good so far. Unfortunately, he did not realize that they were animals.

Natural Soap...Or is it?

It says ‘natural’ soap, but is it really? I owned a natural soap making business, made the soap right on the store’s premises. Often customers would come in and ask if the soap was natural like the Body Shop and Lush. We knew that the Body Shop and Lush soap was not natural, so I looked at their websites to see why people were thinking this. I discovered that they used a lot of terms that would lead one to think this was so. More specifically, they used the term “naturally inspired”, along with other terms such as ‘against animal testing’, and ‘protect our planet’.

Misleading Marketing.

How advertising is worded to mislead you! Sometimes it is what the advertisers don't say! The phrases listed below are typical advertising marketing that I find everywhere. Consider that companies spend billions in advertising trying to get you to purchase their product. Millions are also spent in finding the right words and using spoken and written language differences to their financial benefit. Because they don't do all this for your benefit. For the most part, this article is about household product marketing.

Bee's Wax

Bees wax is a natural wax produced in the bee hive of honey bees. It is the worker bees, the females, that create this wax, to build honeycomb cells for three purposes; raising their young, storing honey, and pollen. It takes eight times the consumption in honey to create the wax. It is estimated that bees fly 150,000 miles to create one pound of wax. It is the type of flowers gathered by the bees that determines the color of the wax, from a white to brown, most often a shade of yellow. The color of beeswax is at first white and then darkens with age and use.

The Gift Of Fear book review

I met a man years ago, who at first sight, put me on red alert. Other people were talking to him like nothing was wrong, yet I had the sense that this man was not what he seemed and I could not allow my eyes to not keep watch. I analyzed him, seeing his beach boy good looks, saw him conversing without sprouting horns, yet I was quite unsettled. I found out years later that he was as bad as a man can get, to woman and children. And this is what this book is about.
