Treating People as Commodities

The culture treats people as commodities I see it everywhere - people working in jobs which carry little meaning and provide little support for personal development. Worst, the culture treats people as commodities. Performance review systems, manager-employee meetings, and even rewards are set only on recent performance. The recent performance is everything that matters. As a result people feel like they are treading water in their jobs. Lack of support for people development at work Part of it starts at the top of the organization.

What causes management problems at work?

What causes management problems at work? Anything but a system Many management systems are anything but a system. At work you often find too much competition between people which gets in the way of teamwork and collaboration. What causes the disconnect? Often it comes down to a confusion around what is expected.

The Importance of Self-Awareness

What is self-awareness? This is unknown territory for many. In school we are seldom taught to do deep reflection. As we get older and become adults we get caught in the cycle of productivity and consumption. As a result self reflection becomes something to be avoided so as not to slow one down. The new wave - Humanistic Management and why you need to get on board.

Our economy needs a boost Take a look around and you will see a lackluster economy in many countries around the world. While some of this does have to do with financial crisis, much more has to do with poor management. People come to work with high expectations. In many workplaces adults are treated like children with an overemphasis on punishment, reward, and silly contests. Add to this an old outdated style of management, and as a result, people are fearful to be creative, take risks, have courage at work, and productivity suffers.

First –deep reflection The challenge however is until we take the time to think deeply about what we want and why nothing significant will change much in our life. Don’t wait for a crisis

Bad vs. Good people?

Labels at work It can be easy as a manager to label people as bad or good performers. This performance labeling tends to be a convenient way to quickly categorize people. It is efficient for human resources. Once labeled, people can be given promotions or demotions, merit or punitive action, more money or less money. Management and Human resources can now implement programs of the month such as succession planning, employee of the month and so on. This approach seems to have come from the behavioral management theories of the past.
