The Ugly Truth About Cosmetics

Did you know that the number one role of your skin is to act as a barrier? Even so, everything we put on our skin is absorbed and goes into our bloodstream. As a result, we shouldn’t put anything on our skin that we wouldn’t eat! According to research, the average person absorbs about ?ve pounds of cosmetic chemicals every year, and nine out of 10 women use makeup past its best-before date, thereby increasing the risk of irritation or contamination.

Allergies: How Healthy is Your Home?

Outdoor allergies are often debilitating for a lot of people in the spring and summer. The environments we subject ourselves to on a daily basis does have a great impact on our health. Believe it or not, poor air quality exposure may be having a negative affect on your health. North Americans spend an average of 90 percent of their time inside, and very few people realize that exposure to indoor contaminants can be 2 to 100 times higher than the contaminants outside. You might be thinking that your house is clean and not polluted, but in all likelihood it is.

Gluten: Are You Sensitive To It?

Do you ever notice yourself feeling bloated, tired or gassy after a meal? Chances are you may have a sensitivity or intolerance to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in all forms of wheat, rye, oats, barley and related hybrids. It is used in food processing because it binds, stabilizes and prevents crumbling. Many people suffer from intolerance to gluten, or more severely celiac disease, which is a hereditary intestinal mal-absorption disorder caused by intolerance to gluten. Gluten sensitivity/intolerance is a condition that is easily under-diagnosed.

Health Check: Healthy or Not?

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is important. Unfortunately, it can also be confusing! The other day, while grocery shopping, I noticed something alarming: A Health Check symbol on a frozen chicken dinner. At first, I thought my eyes had deceived me. They couldn’t possibly endorse such a food; it’s processed! I picked up the frozen dinner and, sure enough, the Health Check symbol was there!

Weight Training Exercises – A Need for Change

I was just talking to a patient yesterday about his work-outs. He mentioned how he had plateaued with his results. I so often hear that comment. I started asking him questions – how often did he worked out? What did he do for his routine? Not surprisingly, he has been doing the exact same routine for year and he always does an entire body routine. Strenght training needs to have variety if you want to have success. The body is smart and it will adapt to your routine and will not progress.

Breast Health: What is Digital Infrared Thermography?

Familiarizing oneself with the various means to detect and diagnosis breast cancer is incredibly important, and will hopefully enable you, or the women in your life, to make more informed decisions when deciding how to go about breast cancer prevention and protection. Though I do not wish to deter you from using Mammography as your prevention method of choice, recent studies have indicated that a single mammogram has 1000 times the radiation of a chest x-ray. Sadly, this has lead to an increase in Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) of 328% since mammography was introduced in 1983.

Setting Goals and Shaping Your Future

I often start my Wellness On The Go™ workshops with information about the importance of setting goals. By a show of hands, I ask the audience to demonstrate how many of them have goals, and whether or not these goals have been documented. Throughout the course of my workshops I have come to recognize that very few individuals actually make up goals for themselves, which quite frankly shocks me. On average, two or three of these individuals will admit to having goals out of the 50 individuals in attendance, and typically only one of these people will actually have their goals written down.

The Truth About Sunscreen

But when was the last time we stopped, and asked ourselves—what exactly is sunscreen, and how does it protect me from the sun?

Are You Strong Enough? 4 Core Strength Exercises

Stretching can be overrated! Now don’t get me wrong, it is essential, but even if you are flexible enough to touch your toes, without the core strength to support your spine, you may be risking injury. My point is simply this; without core strength training, you are missing a significant component of your physical fitness. So many people these days are sitting at a computer all day long and are not engaging the right postural muscles or are engaging too much of the wrong ones. This can lead to chronic low back pain and leg pain/numbness. Who wants that?

Sugar: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

In 2009, it was estimated that more than 50% of North Americans consumed nearly half a pound of sugar PER DAY! Sugar is in almost everything we consume – from pretzels to soda, yet consuming it has proven to be very detrimental to our health. Several years ago we all went on low fat diet: low fat this and low fat that… yet the obesity rate is steadily increasing. What is up with that? We have replaced fat with sugar and created an entire new array of health problems. Diets high in sugar can lead to insulin resistance which means that the insulin has a reduced glucose-lowering effect.

Improve Your Cardio in Less Time and Burn Fat More Efficiently

How would you like to be more efficient with your cardio exercise while exercising for shorter time and burning more calories? You may not need to exercise as long as you think! A while back I came across the work of Dr. Al Sears who has been in the field of exercise for over 25 years. His PACE™ training method is based on the theory that continuous, endurance exercise actually induces your heart and lungs to “downsize” as the body adapts to the demand. The PACE™ system is designed to challenge peak lung volume.

Canada's New Food Guide: Yay or Nay?

It’s about time that Canada updated its Food Guide. Since its creation in 1942, the food guide has only been revised seven times with the last revision done in 2007. When Canada’s Official Food Rules were first introduced the intention behind them was to fatten up Canadian soldiers participating in World War II. Canadians were told to drink a pint of milk per day, eat 4-6 slices of bread, consume some fruits and vegetables, eat one serving of meat or fish and consume 3-4 eggs weekly.

Omega-3 and Omega-6: Striking the Right Balance

Do you remember when you were young and your parents forced you to take ?sh oil by the teaspoon, saying that it was good for you? Guess what? They were right! Omega-3 and Omega-6 are called essential fatty acids (EFAs) and are poly-unsaturated fats. Since your body cannot manufacture EFAs, they need to be obtained from the food you eat or the supplements you take. Linoleic Acid (LA) is a primary member of the Omega-6 fatty acids and can be found in leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains, and vegetable oils like corn oil, soybean oil and sun?ower oil.

Are You Eating Right for Your Metabolic Type?

Are you putting the right type of fuel into your body? Regular or diesel? Do you know what happens to a diesel car if you put regular octane gas into it? The result depends upon how much of the wrong fuel you put into the gas tank. If you filled the tank with the wrong fuel, the car may run for about 2 blocks or so, but in a very short time it will quit. If you filled the tank with ¾ of regular gas and ¼ with diesel gas, the car will run rough for quite a while, but will hopefully work through the regular gas to return to its proper performance level.

Deodorant: Sometimes the Facts Stink

We all sweat, so it’s not surprising that 90 percent of us regularly use antiperspirants and deodorants. In fact, only one other bathroom staple – toothpaste, exceeds sales of these products! You likely use deodorant to mask underarm odor or use antiperspirants to reduce sweating. Unfortunately, health conce s over both are growing. If you have to use one, go with a deodorant. Antiperspirants clog and close your pores, inhibiting you from sweating; this is not a normal or healthy thing. I always advise people not to put anything on their skin that they wouldn’t eat.

Deodorant - What You Need to Know!

Here are the most common chemicals used in deodorants that you should avoid buying: Aluminum – One main conce with deodorants is related to their high levels of aluminum salts. Aluminum chloride, aluminum carbohydrate and aluminum zirconium chlorhydrate glycine complexes can make up 25 percent of the weight of the deodorant/antiperspirant, which is not healthy – especially in Western cultures where most women shave their underarms, resulting in more skin absorption of the harmful substances. Aluminum has also been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
