The Thing

There are many problems in life, kind of like endless itches and glitches that need scratched and resolved. If we're poor, we have to struggle to support ourselves because there is . . . never enough money. If we're rich, then we have the typical problems of rich people - trying not only to tenaciously hold onto our wealth, but increase it as much as possible because there is . . . never enough money. If we are married, we have married people's problems - control and disagreements. If we are single, we have single people's problems - loneliness and insecurity.

What Is Our Soul?

Ask anyone about the soul and more often than not, you will get a blank stare, or the soul might be explained as a spirit, a part of God, our basic being, or our true essence. But there has never been a good, logical explanation. So here goes! Although according to Buddhism the soul does not ...

Christianity Declining in Texas

USA TODAY reports that "Despite population growth and immigration adding nearly 50 million more adults, almost all denominations have lost ground since the first ARIS data was released in 1990. The 2008 results, released today, April 25th, are based on 54,000 interviews with a margin of error of plus or minus 0.5%." On their interactive map, data that was collected over 18 years from the American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) is available state by state.

Spiraling Toward Oblivion

Have you noticed, as you get older, that the months have turned into weeks, and the years into months? Time passes relentlessly, and as we look back on all the things that we have done, where is the significance? I was watching the white tailed deer that frequent our meditation center here in Texas, the bucks, does and fawns come and eat the corn that we put out for them during the dry spells in the heat of summer when there is no grass to eat.

Sociopathic Relationships

Although you may never know it, people you look up to, love, and respect could easily be sociopaths. They give themselves away by exhibiting strange combinations of controlling behaviors, such as being charismatic, calculating, extremely confident, while warmly embracing those who fall under ...

Looking in All the Wrong Places

Just about everything we actively do is on the conscious level. While this is happening on the surface, our body and all its organs are subconsciously being given instructions and messages so that they can function. Not only the body, but the mind is working subconsciously as well, as it filters ...

Why People Lie to Us

Lying is a kind of "get out of jail free" card. We can do bad things, lie about them, and we're off the hook. Or it seems that we are. But really, we're just setting the hook deeper as we begin to believe that we can get away with almost anything, and our conduct becomes increasingly ...

The Heart of the Anger Problem

Life can be a beautiful thing, but if we don’t understand life, we might end up fighting it. More often than not, it’s you and I against the world. Making a living, holding on to our relationships, to our wealth, our political and spiritual beliefs, these can become monumental struggles. Worry ...

An Article About Nothing

This article is about nothing. Therefore, after you read it, you won't know anything more than you did before reading it; it will be a total waste of your time because I have nothing to say. I mean, what can be said about mountains so high that the snow never leaves their peaks, and as we gaze ...

The Constant Flow of Change

"All is impermanent." What a depressing thought, but only to an untrained, worldly mind. Impermanence is never lost, just a flow of change; a flow of change that is an ultimate truth and therefore an ultimate security. What is it that we instead depend upon for our security? When I was a young man I depended upon my strong body and mind to excel in sports, earn an athletic scholarship, attend college, and then go on to establish a career and raise a family. The family is now grown, middle aged themselves, and the body is becoming creaky. The mind is not as sharp as it once was.

Global Swarming

Global swarming is a phenomenon far more impending than greenhouse gasses; global swarming involves the very fabric of our lives. Therefore, how we handle global swarming will determine the quality of our future here on earth. In the past, we have ignored global swarming as if it doesn't exist, ...

2012 A.D. - The End?

Freedom Is What We Already Are

When we strive to be free, when we try to release ourselves from the burdens that we have laid upon ourselves, we miss the point: we are already free. We simply forget that we are free. We forget by becoming bogged down in our difficulties, by pitting ourselves against others, and fighting for ...

Can We Save Our Democracy?

We are a democratic people who believe in democracy, which means equality, due process, freedom, privacy, consent and dissent, toleration, and the common good. We believe in it so adamantly that we advocate it for the world. This is because in the past, democracy has worked well for our country. But within the last decade, problems have arisen that threaten our democracy's very existence. One of the main tenants of a democracy is bringing people of common thought and goals together. It requires a country with like-minded people and defined borders, both of which have deteriorated.

Buddhism - Too Real For Americans?

Similar to Christianity, Buddhism has many branches. The original doctrine that the Buddha taught his monks is called the Theravada or the Teaching of the Elders, but this very deep teaching may be too strange and frightening for everyday Americans. This unpopularity is not unusual when we consider the deeper teachings of many religions, such as Kabbalah in Judaism and Orison in Christianity. People usually talk a good story about God, but don't want to really go there, opting instead for earthly glories such as sex, money, power, security and entertainment. Familiar things.

Who Wants To Be A Coward?

No one wants to be a coward, so if we know what it takes to be a coward, perhaps we can avoid becoming one! When we read books or articles on how we can improve, or self-help books that tell us how we can help ourselves, we are in a twilight zone of assumptions and speculation. To get real, ...

Living Life Unconsciously

Do you feel at times that you are just going through the motions, living life unconsciously? Did you know that this feeling is actually close to spirituality, more so than being entirely and endlessly enthralled with life? Now, there is a difference between living life unconsciously and loving life. Living life unconsciously can be a result of just boredom, or dumbing out from a lack of creativity and energy, where actually loving life can be a result of some good karma that won't quit!

A Tear Drops

Defining Good And Evil

There are good people everywhere, but how do we define good? Pope Sixtus IV loved Tomas de Torquemada (arguably the most evil man that has ever lived)! Good and evil seem entwined with society’s expectations. Behavior can be considered good by some, bad by others, and volumes are written on this ...

Running While Standing Still

What is it that we run from? What is it that takes up almost all of our waking moments? It must be very important, otherwise we wouldn't devote an entire lifetime trying to escape it. The interesting, and at the same time depressing, thing is that all the running in the world won't distance ourselves from this incorrigible anomaly that permeates our lives like water seeps into a sponge.

What is truth? We are told what we should believe by advertisers depicting beautiful bodies, and we are told to believe it is truth. We are told what truth is by our modern Gods, and we believe it, and repeat it like parrots. But is this truth? Are our bodies beautiful? Or should we look more ...

You’re Not Alone

People who are truly spiritual tend toward quietness. Not too many saints and prophets of old were the life of the party with a lampshade on their inebriated heads! You might instead find them out in nature somewhere, on a mountain trail, at the ocean, or in a forest, quietly reflecting on the deeper meanings of life. Or unselfishly caring for sick kids in India. They sacrifice everything they are or could be for that loftiest of goals - direct communication and merging with the absolute.

Life - The Secret to Success

Can life be pigeonholed into a viable model for success? Can a methodology or system be relied upon to give us the results or achievements that we desire? Can a formula for winning ever work with such an unpredictable thing such as life? If we read all self help, psychological, philosophical and religious books on life, we’ll get dizzy. Do this, do that, don’t do this, don’t do that, be careful with this, embrace that - it’s all ultimately a waste of time and energy because we eventually find ourselves again faced with the enclosed system called our personal life.
