Internet Pornography IS Addiction

I have seen them. Men, who sit in my office and tell me they are addicts to internet pornography. They describe symptoms that have long been regarded as markers of addiction. Dependence — They start feeling poorly, maybe even depressed, if they don’t get their regular quota of exposure. This is easy enough to get on the internet, so everybody who feels they want this (or “need” this) is able to get it. Tolerance — People who tell me about using internet porn seem to increase their use of it, to get the same “effect” or “satisfaction.” There is a corollary to this.

Rise in Measles From Lack Of Vaccination

Humans are … well, strange. A fixed problem can become unfixed. First, let’s take it on good authority this problem really has been fixed. It has been fixed with vaccination. Nobody wants problems. So why? Why is the number of measles cases suddenly rising? People seem to propelled by beliefs. They are the hardest thing in the world to change. Nobody will go for a spontaneous “makeover.” Few people understand the danger of anything well enough to make marketing prevention easy, but let’s start with this single outstanding example.

Bureaucracy, What It Is And Why I hate It

“Bureaucracy” is a word that comes from the French, which I suppose means that moi has a greater understanding of it than most folks who have never lived in France. Literally, “bureau” means “desk.” So “bureaucracy” is “rule by desk” in the same way that “democracy” is supposed to be “rule by the people” since “demos” in Greek is “people.” Problems already. There is considerable debate possible about how much representative government can even be a democracy. I mean, do so-called “Public Servants” vote for what their constituencies want, or for what they really believe? Desks have no soul.

Let Me Tell You ‘Bout The Bees (Maybe The Birds Later)

When I first saw in a headline somewhere that the earth’s population of honeybees was diminishing, I actually thought it might be a good thing. Less bee stings. I cannot count the number of patients I have seen (particularly males young enough to harbor delusions of their own vulnerability) who list bee sting allergies as a problem. I always tell them to make sure they carry an EpiPen with them (in the pick-up truck which they invariably drive) so they can save their own life, dramatically extracting themselves from the jaws of death and have a really neat story to tell.

Mental Health In Women

Maybe if it’s “all in your head,” it’s in your brain chemistry We women have spent so long and worked so hard for equality in rights, in education, and at work, that it may actually be hard to talk about how we are different. The World Health Organization has been working on this, and knows a lot about what is going on. Illnesses of the mind, problems with thinking and feeling and living, are only identified by doctors less than half the time. Three out of five people who have this kind of problem wait less than a year before seeing a doctor. This is true of both sexes.

Hills and Mountains

I was in the 9th grade at 13 when I was looking at the ceremony for my Bas Mitzvah, literally “Daughter of the Covenant,” when I would chant the portion of scriptural commentary to the five books of Moses consistent with my birthday, and speak all the Rabbi would let me, and collect some gifts. My prowess with Hebrew was well known. I pretty much knew the whole liturgy already and sang along and drowned out the officiants and choir as much as I could. Some older men sang pretty loud, but I generally drowned them out, too.

More Fake Diet Methods On The Market

I thought that everyone knew by now that if something is a supplement that is supposed to help you lose weight by gulping down a pill, it is going to turn out to be a lie. One of the first things they teach you in debating is that your weakest argument is an appeal to authority. Everyone who follows Dr. Oz has noticed that his recommendations seem to “flip-flop.” Perhaps individual supplements come to him with some inducement to publicize them? Whatever. This stuff does not work terribly well. Garcinia cambogia is also tamarind, often used in different cultures to aid with weight loss.

(Poor) Substitutes For Birth Control

Okay, so you don’t care. You tell me you don’t have sex too much and that is kind of like birth control. It isn’t. It might be if it took having sex five times to have a kid, but it only takes one, so you are very likely to get pregnant. Once you get pregnant, the child is your responsibility for life. This should be taken seriously — it isn’t always a bundle of joy and not all “moms” are equipped to handle the stress. If you try to murder the kid you are in worse trouble — yes I have seen girls who have tried that one. Sometimes the baby-daddy will marry you.

Cefaly, the Anti-Migraine Device

This thing might work for some. Proof of its working is thin, but that tends to be a chronic problem with this kind of device. The patients studied with Cefaly had migraines not over a few times a month. My patients — who use marijuana, generally of the sativa type — have the most intense migraine headaches I have ever seen or heard of and have them on a daily basis. This is pretty amazing, since I worked for one year in a major Midweste university headache clinic. The major questions are what causes migraine headaches, and whether this device indeed nips them in the bud.

How Brominated Vegetable Oil Found Me

Most of my early drafts of blog posts start with “I was minding my own business, surfing the net….” That is something I often do; “surf the net,” I mean. Not “minding my own business,” something which my Mother-of-Blessed-Memory would attest I haven’t done since the beginning of high school.

Men Aren’t What They Used To Be

Men. They really are different. They are psycho-socially different; this has provided for generations of standup comedy material about their inability to ask for directions when they are driving and lost, as well as their inability to move toward a restroom in groups. They got issues. I learned a lot about this when studying and teaching psychotherapy. It seems you can’t get men into psychotherapy unless they are adolescents, post-andropause, or gay.

Topic: Xyrem and Doctors

I’ve got to admit, I must have already been living in the world of alte ative medicine by the time the FDA approved Xyrem. As far as I can figure, it’s exactly the same as the street drug GHB. Us pharmacology types call this gamma hydroxybutyric acid. In a stable salt form that people can take as a prescription drug, it can also be called sodium oxybate.

Thanking Veterans

Turns out, while most veterans appreciate a stranger saying “thank you” for their service, it can also be a bit uncomfortable. I wonder how these same guys feel about the “Have you thanked a veteran today?” bumper stickers.

Whose Birth Control is it, Anyway?

So who is or is not going to pay for contraception under Obamacare? And this is a religious question? The truth of the matter is that even though the United States has promised religious freedom from the very start, they have not done a very good job, historically, of delivering on this promise.

Meningitis and Hershey Bars

Strange, that the meningitis-tainted steroids in Tennessee make me think of the chocolate bar case from Oklahoma. Two young, and it seemed to me, perfectly honest if somewhat histrionic young women who found worms in their Hershey bars — the hard way. Both were unemployed and mothers of several children each, and one was pregnant. They were enjoying their chocolate bars in a dark room by the light of the TV set when one noticed something funny.

Where Have All the Psychiatrists Gone?

A lot of people are whores; it is just a question of naming the price. Even in psychiatry. The psychiatrist interviewed — and he does sound like a fairly decent fellow — says he can only do drug therapy. He cannot change to a talking practice that pays less because he and his wife want to maintain a certain lifestyle in retirement. He just pushes drugs and says it is not that hard. Let me tell you, it is hard if you do it right. Most drugs now used in psychiatry have not even been around long enough for long term side effects to be known.

The Man Who Was Born With His Feet On Backwards

You probably know by now that I’m all about helping people relieve chronic pain and live longer and healthier lives. Just the other day, a gentleman visited me at the clinic to request medical marijuana. He said his feet had rotated 180 degrees from normal when he was born. He was literally born with his feet on backwards.

Antibiotics in Livestock Feed Endanger The Entire World

As it turns out, this whole bit about the use of antibiotics in livestock and poultry is a complex issue. It’s well beyond anything that anyone would guess at first blush. The best online summary is the position paper put out by Food Marketing Institute. Curiously enough, it doesn’t have a year on it. Based on the references, I’d guess it was probably around 2005.

What is there to Treat?

I enjoy having friends, like just about everyone does. But that’s not why I’m in this business. When a patient needs help, I will do my best for them every single time. And if a few colleagues get bruised egos along the way, so be it.

No More Cognitive Loss for Age

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night, that old Dylan Thomas poem, is a favorite of many mature adults, including me. Do not go gentle into that good night Rage, Rage against the dying of the light Let’s face it — none of us is getting any younger. And as we age, we’ve got to choose – will we rage, or will we just go gently.

Headache or Tumor

I don’t think I know anyone who can say they’ve never had a headache. And some have them often enough that they’re given about as much attention as a hiccup or a sneeze. But sometimes, a headache can be more than a headache. I was in Minneapolis doing a rotation in neurology through a university headache clinic. A lot of people were referred through primary care physicians and some even from other neurologists. They were strange headaches to them, but headaches that were frequently seen by these university neurologists in Minneapolis.

Teens and Inhalant Addiction and — K2 Spice?

The first time I heard about using empty whipped cream dispensers to get “high” was a long time ago. I was living at my parents’ house after I had finished medical school in France. I had done my thesis as quickly as possible, in the fall. My residency was projected to start July first. I promised my parents I would do what I could to earn my keep. I sold kitchen cabinet fronts over the telephone, got involved in a chorus production of “Pirates of Penzance,” and substitute taught for awhile.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Sinus Headaches

I read a joke once about a husband’s preemptive strike in the bedroom. He walks in holding two aspirin and a glass of water. When his wife asks what it’s for he says it’s for her headache. She replies “But I don’t have a headache.” “Gotcha!” Headaches are no fun, so we might as well get a little chuckle at their expense. And if you suffer from sinus headaches, there might be quick and inexpensive relief your doctor hasn’t shared with you.
