Upcoming Holidays Festive or “Fastive”? You Decide!

I don’t like forced dichotomies; i.e. either or decisions, when neither apply. Festive does not have to be feast or out of control eating and drinking and “fastive” doesn’t need to be famine. The holidays can be fun and healthful and successful if you make them that way. Your task is to guarantee that you do. I get asked for tips this time of year, tips about what to do about holiday weight gain. So here goes, here are some of my tips. I hope they are helpful.

Kid Faticide! Fat Kidicide! Until You Decide!

Fat kids need our help. We tend to ignore this Fat epidemic. We pretend that they will grow out of it. It’s just baby Fat. Some do. Most don’t. Childhood obesity is so much more polite and politically correct. It softens the magnitude of what we have been avoiding for decades. It is an epidemic that we can do something about. My vote is YES! It is time to do something about childhood Fat and obesity in our society! It is time to prevent Kid Faticide! We owe it to them, to ourselves and to each other.

Children and Obesity

Parents create life, they shape life. They are the most influential people in the lives of their children. The preceding two sentences are true for many parents. Are they true for you? This article is written for you, the parents that are truly committed to help your children flourish. From the mouths of babes to the eyes and ears of our moms and dads: “From our genetics to our early learning, you create us, you bond us, feed us and nurture us. You teach us, you model to us and for us! You used to be able to teach us your best and you did. Now we need more from you.

Michelle Obama, Pepsi and Kraft Foods: Here’s to You, Your Courage and Your Leadership!

Obesity is a national crisis. Our seniors are Fat, our middle aged are Fat, our teenagers are Fat and so are our children AND they are getting Fatter! You have heard the statistics. Thankfully Michelle Obama, Pepsi, Kraft foods and others are taking the leadership in reducing the sugar, Fat and salt in their products. The old corporate, unspoken and un-admitted motto for many in the fast food industry was a silent war of them and us and them. Supply “It” and they will eat “It” and drink “It”!

Faticide Continued!

I think the concept of Faticide is worth expanding upon. In fact, I believe, it should become part of our lexicon. Faticide is a word I made up. It means the willful killing of self and/or another human being by consuming, enabling and condoning excess Fat. There can be premeditated, first degree Faticide. There can be involuntary Fat slaughter. You get the point. I think it is criminal for a society to idly ignore the health of its citizenry.

Fat and Salted.

I love salt. In my opinion, next to sugar, salt is one of the most delicious of all flavors. The question is: Does salt love me? Facts: We need salt to live. Too much Kills! The American Heart Association recommends that we need about 1 teaspoon of salt per day for adults and about half that amount for kids. The average American eats twice that amount. We can survive on about 1/5 that amount. Excess salt causes problems. I am neither a nutritionist nor a physician. I know what I feel and see in my body when I eat too much salt; i.e. bloated and lethargic. I feel better with less salt.

Faticide? You Decide!

Wellness might be catching on. Maybe? Even the fast food industry is paying attention. They used to sell value for your dollar. Cheap, Fat, Sugared and Salted foods, engineered to taste great, to look great, to smell great, to condition you to eat It their way! And we did. In fact, we did such a good job of it that it became some of our greatest exports, our claim to fame, our way of Americanizing the world.

Advertorial I Wrote You Didn’t Get FAT From Breathing! Because:

Life can change direction quickly, creating long term unintended consequences. Stuck steals focus; depression/addiction cripples. Opportunity awaits us all. I know the difference. It was October 2, 1964 at 4:02 PM. My father died suddenly. I was sixteen. My world changed instantly and so did I. I was told looked like Paul McCartney, had a car, was a freshman in college and had just started to date. Life looked good, my future was optimistic.

Are You Afraid Of Anxiety? I Was!

Life has many moments consisting of many things. That sounds pretty simple. It is. The previous sentences are just a non-anxious way of getting some words on paper as I begin this section on proactive ways of managing anxiety. There are many causes of anxiety: some are obvious, others not. There are many effective ways of treating anxiety: psychotherapy and psychotropic medications are the two most common. As long as these anxieties are not debilitating and the person having them is not in need of professional mental health treatment, the anxiety can be readily managed.

Sharpen Your Mind, Stay Active, Live Your Life Your Way!

Many years ago, I learned: “A mind is a terrible thing to waste!” I refuse to waste mine. On December 25, 2007, I turned 60. I have just begun to actively live and enjoy the rest of my life. In this article, I will share some important discoveries about what you need to do to live the successful active life that you deserve. I have learned that we have few guarantees in life. The most important guarantee is that we have Choice. Choice about how we participate in our life. We can react well or poorly, with a smile and optimism or with anger and pessimism.

AVOID EXCUSES!

Excuses are your way of avoiding to do what you need to do to succeed. Often excuses are legitimate reasons for why you won’t do what is necessary. To succeed and progress, you need to eliminate as many excuses as possible. Until your excuses are eliminated they remain as insurmountable barriers between you and the life plan you desire:… You fill in the blanks. Doctor’s excuses are some of the most legitimate excuses in our world: “I am following doctor’s orders!” These five words allow people to give up many of the options, opportunities and responsibilities available to them.

Fat’s Role In Illness

As I continue to write, I continue to read from the wisdom of others. I especially like well researched scholarly works that gather and present facts that substantiate truths and beliefs as we struggle to find ways to justify decisions we make about life and health and wellness. And so I read another well written, well researched article in the LA Times, this one, by Devon Schuyler, March, 22, 2010: “Obesity’s role in cancer. It may not cause the disease, but studies show a link between fat and certain types.” I hope you read it too. I am neither a cancer doctor nor a reporter.
