Fun in the Sun at Work

It’s a familiar nightmare. You arrive at a party and the host greets you. It’s then that you realize you are wearing your pajamas or, worse, only a bath towel. There’s no place to hide, and everyone is looking at you. Thankfully, at that moment, you awaken to realize it was all a bad dream. Phew!

Summer Skincare – What's Hot & What's Not!

As the temperatures rise, the needs of your skin change. We're not only talking sun protection, although that is certainly an important component, we're also thinking about what your skin needs to adjust and be safe and happy in the warmer temperatures. Here are a few basic tips:

Are You Having a Bad Hair Day?

Some mornings I look in the mirror and feel like I look about a 100 years old. I have learned that frowning at myself or analyzing every inch of my face in a magnified mirror does not make things better (only worse!), and a big smile always perks me up (at least temporarily).

Unapologetically Matchy-Matchy!

Recently, I was browsing in one of my favorite stores, and one of the sales women said to me, “Oh, one of your clients was just in, and she bought that necklace you told her about.” (I had seen this necklace that was SO her and sent her a picture). She then said, “I showed her another necklace as well that she loved, but we couldn’t find earrings to match so she didn’t get it. She told me that she’s ‘matchy-matchy’ like Ginger.” I laughed.

Body Image: Friend or Foe?

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you admire your sparkly eyes, toned arms, or small waist? Or, do you zoom in with great precision on your curvy hips (although you probably call them big or worse!), legs that you wish were longer, or hair that you wish was thicker? If the latter sounds more familiar, you are in good company — it’s a common issue among women.

Can You Wear These Styles?

Are you confused? Do you head into a store all hopeful and happy and leave disgruntled and crabby? Some of you tell me that shopping has gotten to the point where you walk into the store filled with dread and a certainty you won’t find anything – that’s how often you’ve been disappointed. Knowing what to buy and what looks good can feel tricky. I regularly get questions about particular styles and whether they are suited to someone over 40…and in some cases, anyone at all regardless of her age.

Three Fashion Tips to Jumpstart Your New Year Style!

I gave up on New Year resolutions a long time ago. I got tired of feeling badly when I didn’t do what I said I would do. Since then I have learned that it’s all about me and not about the expectations of others or the time of year. By now, most people have either made their New Year resolutions or have cynically (or just indifferently) poo-poo’ed them as a waste time. It seems that these days few people embark on a resolution with gusto and determination and even fewer actually maintain it. Why?

Cardigans: How to Eliminate the Frump Factor

This is the year of the cardigan sweater. Short, long, embellished, patterned, tailored, flowing, trendy, colorful, neutral, you name it, it’s out there! How fabulous, right?…or maybe not! While cardigans are extremely functional, they are also dangerous. It doesn’t take much for a cardigan to go from adorable and pretty to downright frumpy. You often hear celebrity stylists say rather nonchalantly, “Oh, yes, just add a little cardigan over it, and you’re all set!” Then they leave it at that with no direction! Yikes!

3 Popular Skin Myths

1. Drinking water alone will hydrate your skin. Well, maybe a little. If you’re still in your formative years, you’re fine. Of course, you also have to take into consideration the climate (humidity), level of activity (how much you’re perspiring), and how you eat and what you drink (some drinks actually dehydrate you). Without going into great detail, let me just say that as we age, the parts of our skin that held the moisture in when we were younger are no longer able to do the job effectively. Thus, moisture evaporates quickly.

Easy, Breezy Summer Dressing Tips

I don’t know about you but in New England we went from winter to summer ove ight. One day it was 49 degrees and drizzling and the next it was 85, sunny and humid. I hate it when that happens. There’s a whole section of my closet waiting to be worn! Of course, wait 5 minutes and it could all change again. I keep hoping we’ll have a peek of spring sometime in the next month before we go to real true summer. But, that’s the beauty of New England…you just never know. When the weather changes so dramatically one of two things happens:

Dealing With Pesky Bra Straps

As most of my clients will tell you, I am pretty easy going. I’m a big believe in self-expression in your wardrobe, and I help women create this for themselves. To this end, I am always open to exploring ways to make something unconventional work. That said, can we please, please do away with the trend of visible bra straps? I mean, do we really need to see someone’s underwear? Okay, I know sometimes bra straps have the annoying habit of peeking out here or there, and it’s not the end of the world, but the truth is that they really don’t need to.

Get Your Popcorn & Style Advice at the Movies

I am addicted to the Hallmark Channel. I admit it! Don’t give me violence, angst and heartbreaking suffering, and especially don’t make me watch the news. I won’t have any of it. Instead, give me a bowl of popco and corny movies with happy endings. This time of year Hallmark runs sappy movies almost non-stop, and I love it. We sit in front of the fire with the kitties piled on the couch with us, drink tea and watch movies that make most of our friends roll their eyes. I don’t care…they make me happy.

Stop Comparing Your Body

As a teenager, going to the beach was an ordeal for me on many levels. First of all, I’m white as white can be and so, while my friends basked in the sun all day, I’d be burned to a crisp within about 30 minutes. But, that wasn’t all… While I was sitting on the blanket wrapped in several towels, a sweatshirt, and a hat, I’d watch the other women sun bathers and…yup, you guessed it, I’d compare myself. Trust me, to my way of thinking I NEVER measured up.
