Girlfriends Are Good Medicine

The female brain is hard wired for connection, nurturing, collaboration and communicating. Is it any wonder then that we love to gab, share, bitch, giggle, cry, kvetch, plan, scheme, and share with one another? The men folk just don’t get it. Their brains are designed for action, fight or flight, and fixing things but not feeling them.

Everything Is Food

Science tells us that the stomach has a brain and the heart has a brain. What this means is that these two vitally important organs will react to something when it enters our systems and send a message to other parts of the body independent of the "real" brain, the one on top, the one we think ...

Give Yourself A Gift

Who among us has not welled up while watching the weight loss sheroes and heroes tell their stories on Oprah or the Biggest Loser? Okay, you in the back row there with the “Oh please” smirk on your face, go out and have a cigarette. How about those “I left that son-of-a-bitch with nothing but a ...

The Heart's Message

For centuries the heart has been considered the seat of the soul and emotion. In a way it feels as if the heart creates these feelings or that our emotions somehow arise from the heart. Isn’t the heart just a muscle, an organ that moves blood through our bodies? We know that lifestyle choices contribute to the wellness or disease of our hearts but do our emotions affect the heart? To get the answers to these and other questions about the heart I went to the source.

Words From The Heart

We use the word heart in conjunction with feelings of elation, sadness, kindness, love, and desire. All of these are simply words that we use to describe the emotions that come out of our daily experiences. The heart has for centuries been considered the seat of the soul and emotion but in a ...

Why Choose Struggle?

Are you addicted to struggle? Do you find it more comfortable — or just habitual — to stay in the place of “it can’t work for me, or happen to me?” than it is to figure out how to move forward or have things be easier? Dr. Sue Morter says, “Life is hard right up until it isn’t.” Ok, great, what the heck does that mean? Let’s see if I can sort it out for you. Each of us has goals, desires, dreams. Depending on the goal, how out-of-the-box it is for us, there is a relative amount of fear. We fear failing, that’s universal. Some fear success and most of us fear what others will think.

Goals To Fall in Love With - Goals That Work!

Anyone not thinking about the New Year with both anticipation and a bit of dread? Without vigilance my mind goes on shuffle. Thoughts range in tempo and temperament from "Oh my gawd it's almost the first of the year and I haven't reached all of my goals from 2010" to "Ahh, a new year, an empty canvas, a world of possibility."

The Bright Side Of The Midlife Muffin Top

Dern, I wish I'd invented that term "muffin top." Alas some other smart woman got there first--kudos and thanks for the hysterical yet accurate descriptor. Green Up Your Inner Environment

It's not easy being green for Kermit the Frog but it sure is popular and easier than ever these days to "go green." Paint, flowerpots, paper, shoes, cars and hundreds of other items we use every day are produced in environmentally friendly ways. We care about the environment around us, and judging from the statistics, not a moment too soon.

Practice

When we refer to certain professions we call the business of it a practice. My friend's husband has a dental practice, I have a coaching practice, my brother practices law. Life is short, even in its longest days

This is a quote from John Mellencamp and it got stuck in my head while listening to NPR one day, on a Terry Gross/ Fresh Air interview. That day, life was good, the sun was shining and I was gathering provisions to cook a typical Hampton’s meal for a client. Typical means fresh, local caught fish, farm stand produce, and most likely fire from a grill. "Summer is short", I thought, all too short here on the east coast. Note to self: take advantage of it, it’s all too soo October.

What Kind Of Crazy Idea Is That!?

Ever have anyone ask you that in reference to a new hair color, career move, or big purchase you were considering? How about when you were younger and you were trying on the idea-of-the-moment around "what do you want to be when you grow up?" Perhaps at one point you thought of becoming a brain ...

Extreme Birthday Belly

Thank god that's over! No, not the creamy pumpkin ales, chips and curry at the local pub, nor the chewy, seed encrusted bread -- especially not the bread. It was birthday week after all. Yes birthday week, not day, week. It's tradition that one makes the most of this all-about-me holiday. Seems the UK must have a similar tradition because this year my DH was the one who sparked the idea in my vulnerable food loving brain. We were at a restaurant late Sunday afte oon intending to have an early dinner.r

The Salt Debate — Is it the devil or a delicious ingredient in a healthy diet?

• Sodium is an essential nutrient for health. It regulates the total amount of water in the body and is critical in generating electrical signals that power communication between the brain, nervous system, and muscles. • Too much or too little sodium therefore can cause cells to malfunction, and extremes in the blood sodium levels (too much or too little) can be fatal.r

Creating The Future

We plan, God laughs. So someone told me years ago. The longer it lingers the more I agree. Regardless of your take on the idea of God, I think you get the point. You’ve been there right? You are heading down a carefully-planned out path, people are doing what they are supposed to. Life is good. You feel in control. Then something happens. Someone dies, someone lies, or the pink slip gets handed to you this time. The new plan? Survive, put the pieces back together, think about what it all means, and try not to panic.

Ingredients for A Joyful Soup

Who among us does not think about what we might do differently in the New Year? Tied in to this thinking is the temptation to compare us to the cultural profile of how our lives should look at this age and this stage. I say temptation because it is not necessary, like so many other temptresses we encounter, but oh is it seductive. Even those who practice meditation, have a deep connection with their source, their god, or their higher selves and go there first for guidance can get caught up in the comparison game.

404 Page Not Found — Something needs your attention

That beautiful website you worked so hard on and checked 12 times for glitches before launching harbors a sleeping saboteur. For reasons unknown and mysterious, what once worked will break. And you don’t even have to be in the room. That perfect image you finally found for your best blog post this month will, instead of the sun glinting on the sea, appear with a blank rectangle framing a question mark. No sun. No sea. Fail. Broken links, missing images, videos that won’t p

Monthly marketing happenings + a little woo for a change

Those of you who have been around awhile will not be surprised by the last part of that subject line. For years I sprinkled in the non-physical side of my life and highlighted the mentors from afar that I follow and how they’ve impacted me. I’ve always honored my intuition — in work and life — and feel pulled more into that space every day. Rest easy if this isn’t your thing; it’s not taking over center stage. But in our quest to stand out, to be seen and heard, I believe it

Lose your mind (in a manifesto) Part 2

Last week my bold claim was that in order to get to clarity on your message, mantra, or answer to “what do you do” question, or even make a big decision, you had to lose your mind. (Check out the article here in case you missed it.) http://bemoremarketable.com/lose-your-mind-find-clarity/ One fun way to do this is to write your manifesto. If you involuntarily rolled your eyes thinking manifestos are dead, think again. A manifesto does what the mission statement — de riguer f

Lose your mind. Find clarity

In my humble opinion, what’s missing on the way to clarity — and why so many business owners struggle to have it — will surprise you. You must lose your mind. Wouldn’t it be great if you could set your mind aside now and again and be infused with the creativity that created flowers, the sea, life? (Technically you can with psychedelics, but I try to run above board here at BMM.) How else to lose or set aside our minds to get out of the same way of thinking, the rut that li

Can you tell me why you’re the better choice?

It’s planting season. My usual part-time workload has temporarily doubled. My expertise is in flowering plants, perennials and annuals artfully overflowing their pots and landscapes drenched in color. This year, my vegetable gardening colleague brought new life into the world in the form of a daughter rather than an edible plant and so is out on mate ity leave. Starting vegetables from seed and ensuring their safe passage from packet to seedling to soil has expanded my love o

The Passive Income Myth

According to the IRS there are three categories of income: Active, passive, and portfolio. Active is what it sounds like. You do income-producing activities that you get income. Portfolio is also what it sounds like. You invest money into things like stocks, real estate funds, or other investment vehicles and — in the best of times — your investment yields gains, or income. Then there is passive income. The sacred cow of network marketing companies and continuity/membersh

How to know when to invest in "that new thing" for your business

Keeping up with all of the new tools promising to make our business lives better, more successful, easier, and do it all or less than the other guy’s new thing is impossible. I Googled “new tools for business” and the G-ster returned 863,000,000 entries. Now let’s say that 99% of those are not high quality offers, not from a reliable resource, or simply not a match to my needs. The remaining 1% is many thousands more tha I care to read. My search was not specific enough it’s

5 Reasons Your Potential Clients Are Going Somewhere Else

Marketing is hard work. And I believe if you are reading this, you care a great deal about how your customers, clients, and the marketplace feels about you. Reputation is critical to a successful business, and so is making it easy for people to find you and engage with you. Every marketing strategy is not a home run — and much of what the gurus say “Everyone” should do or use is, sadly, not going to work for everyone. Here are a few examples of ways we lose business and how

Whose Bio is this? And why I hope it isn’t yours

It’s awkward to talk about ourselves. How to reveal just enough of who we are as a person and combine it with our rock star skills and expertise without bragging or boring people? And yet we must figure it out. Writing your bio may cause crabbiness or nausea, but it is an important part of your brand portfolio and must be done — in advance of needing it. You’ll use variations online, as a speaker, and when looking for a referral or an introduction. Waiting until someone asks

People can see through the BS.

People can see through the BS. An email just landed in my inbox that fueled this rant. It was a partner promotional email for someone who is doing a new program launch. That’s fine, I get value from many affiliate promos from people I follow. My issue is with the way this partner framed the urgency piece to get me to sign up for the remaining webinar. I’m guessing this launch is PLF style, which means that there are 3 videos that provide content, know like and trust, and fi

10 Things and What it Means to Be More Marketable

Why should you consider the idea of being more marketable? Maybe the first question you have is, “what does it even mea Greg, be more marketable?” I’m so glad you asked. And I have honestly had this question recently, and it got me thinking. My intention when I started this business was to help people with their message, their copy, and their talks, so that they can then market themselves with confidence. Being more marketable means you reach more of your ideal people and m

The problem is not your service or product

It’s how you talk about it. It isn’t that your product doesn’t work, you aren’t that good, or your service doesn't provide value. You aren’t clear about how you help, why you are different, or what problem you solve. And if you aren’t clear then any message you put out into the ether will also not be clear. Where does that leave you? Wondering what is wrong, or blaming your website/your coach/the program you bought/you for being wrong about you. There are two things you

Mind Your Marketing Manners

Foul language, aggressive sales people, dismissive behavior, men talking over women, cyber-bullys, and a world short on patience and respect for the other guy has replaced manners and decency; online and off. Anyone reading this newsletter does not fall into the category of intentionally bad mannered or disrespectful but if you are missing some of the rules of the game of marketing, you might be seen that way. Marketing today is a game of relationship building vs. ABC, alway

Content creation for non-writers, procrastinators, and the stuck among us

The cursor blinks, the time ticks slowly by, the page stays empty and most likely you end up in procrastination hell, the people of Walmart photo montage just as entertaining today as it was the first 5 times you watched it. You are not alone. Today I migrated downstairs to the kitchen at least four times besot by a hunger I could not feed. Sadly content ideas do not live in my refrigerator. But oh, the truffle cheese, pickled eggs, and melon bits. I digress. Here are 10 ty
