***HATE TO LOVE

I read an article about how one college’s students hates another college and its rival student body. This arises out of a sports rivalry spanning over one hundred years. My initial reaction was wondering how in the world we are going to have peace on this planet when even simple friendly sport competitions provokes hatred in the Bible belt. This is not merely a frivolous academic animosity; it breaks into violence from time to time. I observe with great compassion that there is something seriously ignorant and misguided if is this is what the institutions of higher learning are creating.

***FREEDOM

In the United States, we are coming up on a national holiday known as Independence Day. It is an annual remembrance of a day when the thirteen British colonies in North America agreed to an act of treason against the crown of England. With some really good karma these men defeated the armies of England and we became who we are. The irony is that even though we have freedoms unequaled in any other country in the world, many people are still slaves and prisoners to their own minds.

***Don’t Panic, Be Happy

I have been receiving numerous emails from people who are panicking about the future. They are worried that they won’t get what they want or they will lose what they have, whether it is a job, a mate, respect or serenity. The state of the world economy is a breeding ground for anxiety and turmoil. Great, isn’t it!

***A NEW LOVE

It is April, the time of mating, regeneration and rebirth. Winter has long fled and summer approaches. Sap is rising in the trees and blossoms, new leaves, and growth surrounds us. For single people, thoughts turn to romance. For people in relationship, thoughts turn to rejuvenation. The reality of today’s culture is that many people are also beginning or finishing the long process of divorce and separation. The global rate of divorce is at an all time high, and no country is immune to its effects.

***Letting Go

Many people ask, “how am I supposed to let go”, or “what does it mean to let go?” Most people have attachments to others, to money, to beliefs systems (“BS”) or to self-image. People are most attached to how other people think about them. All of this leads to suffering. In order to let go, we have to detach ourselves to preconception, prejudice and judgment. It is not a physical action, to “let go” of someone doesn’t mean to physically leave or to throw them out of the house. What “letting go” means is detachment and opening your heart.

***FOCUSING ON THE JOU EY

I suffer, primarily because I am constantly comparing myself to others. I make irrational and unjustified conclusions and assumptions about how I am doing by observing other people. I may be doing my best, but I will not feel satisfied or fulfilled if I observe other people further down the path or having more “success.” Conversely, I may not be doing my best but I will feel relieved or smug if I observe that I am ahead of others or more successful than others engaged in similar activities. I suffer because I was trained to think this way by an educational system that thought that way.

***COMMUNITY

This time of year is the holiday season and the annual ending of the Gregorian calendar. It is a time when the romantic notion of the reuniting of families and generosity of giving comes to the surface. It is also a depressing and stressful time for many people, in part because the shortening of daylight and also in part because it is the time of the metaphorical jou ey of the dark night of the soul, preparing for the return of the light. Medical professionals and counselors agree that this time of year has the highest incidence of stress and anxiety for western cultures.

***THE PURPOSE OF LIFE

I donate a lot of time giving advice to people on “ask the experts” sort of websites. There are two questions that always seem to be repeated. The first is “what is my purpose in life” and the other is “how do I increase my self esteem?” The ironic twist to these questions is that they both have the same answer, regardless of age or circumstance of the person asking. The amazing thing is that after giving this same answer hundreds of times, I have never had anyone write me back and say “you were wrong!”

***HOW TO HAVE A WONDER FULL DAY

I saw a sign that read, “Wake up every morning with the thought that something wonderful will happen that day”. As a spiritual teacher and healer, I thought that was one of the most profound things I have ever read for several reasons. First, it acknowledges that most of what we experience in our lives is manifested from our thoughts, although many times it comes from our subconscious thoughts. Second, I am convinced that how we start our day dictates what kind of day we will have. “Start our day” means what is going through our minds when we first wake up.

***THE PROBLEM WITH HEALERS

The call begins when we work in the illusion of the material world. There is a nagging voice in the back of our mind that whispers constantly that we are destined for something more compassionate and meaningful in our lives. The work we are doing becomes boring, inconsequential, and unimportant. We could be lawyers, construction workers, clerks, 9 to 5’ers. We want to find meaning in life and start reading books on spirituality or enlightenment.

***BEING CLEVER

I constantly amaze myself how I can steal unhappiness from the jaws of bliss. It takes quite a bit of effort at times to make myself unhappy. However, because I am so clever, I can do it even when there is absolutely no reason to be unhappy. I realize that it is a learned trait, developed over 50+ years of training, and hard to change. I am encouraged that I realize this, because what I am aware of can change. However, it takes quite a bit of courage and honesty to admit this to myself, especially when I convince myself I am right.

***The Most Tragic Addiction

In my experience and observation the most tragic and insidious of all addictions is the addiction to suffering. The clinical definition of addiction is “compulsive repetition of a known behavior with adverse consequences.” In other words addiction is repeatedly engaging in actions that knowingly cause adverse results. There are two persistent issues connected with addictions, (1) what is causing the addiction and (2) how do we stop it?

***BE THE HERO IN YOUR OWN STORY

Many times I see people who are stressed out, unhappy, overwhelmed, angry and afraid. And these are the “spiritual” people. I have to ask myself “What isn’t working?” Then I see people who are happy, self-aware, and enjoying their life. I have to ask myself, “What is working?” The interesting thing is, from outward appearances, there is no rhyme or reason really as to who is happy and who isn’t. Lack of money is blamed for many ills; however, I have met a number of people who have no money and are full of life and love without stress. So money obviously is not the key.

***DOING IT WRONG

I had a astrological reading from Stephanie Azaria the other day. After studying my star chart for a while, she told me that according to the positions of the planets and stars, I was born to struggle because the struggle increased the speed of my growth. It was my destiny to feel like I was doing something wrong because it made me be more conscious of what I thought, said and did. In other words, it was my karma to always feel like I was making a mistake, and that I was a mistake. This was the grace that fueled my growth as a spiritual being.

***All Perception is Projection

All perception is projection is one of my favorite teachings of Derek O’Neill. It is one of those ultimate truths that apply to every facet of my life. Sometimes it is so basic that I totally miss the true meaning of the teaching. It is the basic premise of the higher teaching that we create everything that we perceive for our own enlightenment. I had a great example of the operation of this teaching in action this winter.

***CAIN’S LAMENT

There is a story early in the Old Testament of the Bible called the story of Cain and Abel. This is a multi-layered story that explains much about human suffering. The story goes that two of the original humans in the Judo-Christian tradition (Adam and Eve) had two children after getting evicted from the Garden of Eden. The children’s names were Cain and Abel. Cain grew up to be a farmer, and Abel was a shepherd. Both were brought up by their parents to worship the Jewish God and to sacrifice a portion of their crops/herd to God in gratitude of their prosperity.

***PAIN AND ALTE ATIVE MEDICINE

My name is James Gray Robinson, and I am a spiritual/energy/faith healer. Earlier in my life, I was a trial atto ey in North Carolina, from a family filed with lawyers and medical doctors. My twin brother is the medical director of the Guilford County (NC) Health Department. My background and training would normally dismiss energy or spiritual healing as stuff of wishful thinking or downright quackery. I have discovered that alte ative medical techniques are effective and complementary to medical science. This article examines how and why alte ative medicine works.

***The Wheel of Karma

One of the most often asked question of spiritual teachers by students is “what is my purpose”? Students who study spiritual concepts want to have some idea of why the universe operates in the manner it is experienced. They want to understand so that they can stop suffering. An understanding of the “big picture” is helpful to reduce anxiety and give us something to feel more comfortable. The Wheel of Karma created by the Tibetan Buddhists gives us that bigger picture along with clues of what we can expect. The Wheel is a symbolic representation of the nature of life.

***The Miracle of a Broken Heart

It is my experience that the ancient teachings (God) come to me in times of my greatest growth and help me to understand that everything is in my highest good. I had the sublime and transformational experience recently of not getting what (or who) I really, really, really wanted. Specifically, I met someone that I have a great deal in common with, and share many common beliefs, profoundly enjoy every minute with this person and was convinced that I had finally found my soul mate. The kicker was that this person is in a relationship that they are not willing to leave.

***The Trouble with The Law of Attraction

There are so many books out now proclaiming that we can use the Law of Attraction to create abundance, love, wealth, happiness, etc. etc. The trouble with these belief systems is that it is all mental illusion. It fosters the belief that if you follow their secret recipe, you will get what you want. These “attraction gurus” want you believe that if you are not getting what you want, you must be doing something wrong. If you would just do it right, then you would be happy.

***THE GIFT OF AWARENESS

I receive a lot of emails from various self-improvement or spiritual development gurus and websites that contain messages of various ways to improve my life, my health, my relationships, my bank accounts or my enlightenment. There certainly is a lot of stuff out there competing for my attention and my dollars. I came to the realization that there must be a lot of people out there that don’t like what they are experiencing in order to manifest all of these people who are suggesting how to improve it.

***THE POWER OF WOW!

I have been teaching people all over the world for almost five years about all sorts of magic. The magic of healing, the magic of prayer, the magic of focused thought. One of the most popular teachings, which I have given over the years, is one of the most simple, yet effective, magic words. That word is WOW! There are several reasons why I believe it is one of the original magic words on the planet.

***THANKSGIVING FOR LOSERS

Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are upon us. Millions of homes will have families sitting down to massive amounts of food, warmth, cheer and stories. Many more homes will be vacant, foreclosed, silent and empty. Even more will be filled with abuse, fear, loneliness, depression or sorrow. It is easy to feel grateful when our bellies and bank accounts are full. It is not so easy to feel grateful when they are empty. This article is not for the ones who have many things to be grateful about. This article is for the ones who feel that they have nothing to feel grateful for.

I was reading Forbes Magazine the other day because it had a headline about how the recession had affected the richest people in the world. (“Billionaire Bust” March 30, 2009). The article summarized the net worth losses of the 20 richest people of the world. They were: Bill Gates: 18 Billion dollarsr Warren Buffet: 25 Billion dollarsr Carlos Helu: 25 Billion dollarsr Larry Ellison 2.5 Billion dollarsr Ingvar Kamprad: 9 Billion dollarsr Karl Albrecht: 5.5 Billion dollarsr Mukesh Ambani: 23.5 Billion dollarsr Lakshmi Mittal: 25.7 Billion dollarsr Theo Albrecht: 4.2 Billion dollarsr

***THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE WORLD

I used to think that the most powerful energy in the world is love. There were many reasons for this, as love changes everything. Love is the creative aspect to creation, it is the energy that flows through us all, it is life. The love of the creative energy of the universe created us, sustains us, renews us. After experiencing true happiness, I now believe that there is a stronger force, the force of happiness.

***BLOCKS

Many times I hear people state that they are “blocked”. They often apply this term to the fact that they are not getting what they want. They are “blocked” from financial abundance. They are “blocked” from true love. They are “blocked” from healing a physical, emotional, mental or spiritual problem. They spend a fortune going to spiritual/alte ative healers, shamans, gurus, psychics or energy channels to get “unblocked”. It has occurred to me that all of this is a huge illusion that is totally unnecessary.

***SENTIMENTALITY

I have learned that there are many sources of misery and suffering in this world. It seems that every belief system has its pet theory. Buddhists believe that desire causes all suffering. Other religions claim separation from God (sin) causes suffering. Others believe that rejection of what is happening at any given moment causes suffering. Yet still others claim that fear causes suffering. I offer the case of sentimentality as a major cause of suffering.

***GETTING OUT OF MY HEAD AND INTO MY HEART

I am troubled by all of the empowerment literature that discusses how we disempower ourselves by thinking disempowering thoughts. This line of thinking recommends that we think empowering thoughts, make empowering choices and live empowered lives. I could not put my finger on why this huge cultural phenomenon did not ring true to me. Then I remembered that Albert Einstein once said, “You can’t solve a problem with the same thinking that created it.” The problem is not how I am thinking; the problem is that I am thinking.

***Taking Responsibility

I was in an automobile wreck the other day. It was quite serious, a freak accident involving defective brakes on my car. Specifically, the brake rotor on my right front wheel spontaneously sheared in half. This resulted in my right front wheel locking up and forcing my car into the curb. When the tire hit the curb the front axle separated and the wheel ended up in a ninety-degree angle to its proper position. It cost over $5500.00 to repair. The wreck happened while I was traveling at approximately 35 mph. Ten minutes earlier I had been traveling at 75 mph down an interstate.

***PRACTICING NON-VIOLENCE

I had an experience with another driver in Atlanta, Ga. The driver had tailgated me for miles, and then passed me on the right of a four lane local road and cut me off at an intersection. I blared my horn at him to let him know how much I did not appreciate his aggressive driving. He got out of his car and started screaming at me and I actually thought I might have to defend myself. The traffic light turned green and he got back in his car and drove off at a dangerously high speed.

***How To Say Goodbye

Many times in our life we have to say goodbye. We say goodbye to loved ones who graduate to higher dimensions through the illusion of death. We say goodbye to people we become attached to that leave us on the physical plane. We say goodbye to children who grow up and become adults. We say goodbye to most people on a daily basis as we move from one physical location to another.

***RAISING VIBRATORY RATES

Many spiritual teachers and new age gurus talk about raising our vibratory rates. What they are really talking about is changing the way that we relate to the world, each other and our minds. Most spiritual beliefs include the proposition that we have a soul, or spirit, that is separate from our minds and thoughts. It is commonly referred to as the “higher self”, or an awareness of the perceived and the perceiver. When we can observe our minds thinking, our personalities working, our bodies doing, we can stop being held captive to these aspects of ourselves and begin to become aware.

***AND GOD LAUGHED

The source of all misery and suffering is the illusion that we are separate from God. This illusion creates the fear that we will never get what we want or we will lose something we have and don’t want to lose. When this fear arises, it creates another illusion that if we don’t get what we want, we have done something wrong or we are in opposition to “God’s will”. This raises the question of what we really want.

***EMOTIONAL MATURITY

If we continue to live on this planet, we have to get older. There are various physiological changes that we experience as we go through the process of aging. Ignoring the legends of immortal beings that walk the planet, we all grow older physically. Genetics, supplements, a positive attitude, plenty of water, exercise and healthy diets can help us look young as long as possible, but the best we can expect is a cause of death that reads: “died of advanced age.” I remember the slogans, “live fast, die young.” Now that I am almost 60, I look forward to life after 100 years of age.

***A CRISIS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

I read recently that a very famous spiritual writer was calling on all “light workers” to pray for healing for the world and for an end to the world’s problems and strife so that love and happiness could rule supreme. This misunderstanding is at the core of the issues challenging our reality at the moment. Not coincidentally, the world stock markets are plunging (again) and financial uncertainty is again at our doorstep. Financial doom and gloom are causing suffering all over the planet.

***HAPPINESS VS. DENIAL

A student asked me a very good question the other day, and I had to think awhile before I responded. It is a question that many people never ask themselves and as a result miss an opportunity to apply some very important teachings. The question was “how do I know whether I am happy or just in denial?” When we talk about denial, we are talking about a defense mechanism that our minds use to ignore pain. We suppress unpleasant subjects and bury traumatic memories in order to function. Many times this suppression can lead to anger that is in turn suppressed, and a vicious cycle forms.

***KARMA IS AN ILLUSION

Religions and philosophies teach us that there are three kinds of karma. There is (1) the karma that we are born with; (2) the karma that we are creating at any one moment; and (3) karma we will encounter in the future. All of these karmas are created by action, whether by thought, word or deed. It is this karma that keeps us bound to the wheel of death and rebirth, for we keep coming back to pay off these karmic debts over and over again.

***PERFECTION

I noticed on Facebook that someone posted a statement that “it is okay not to be perfect.” I responded by saying that everyone is perfect, for which I was told “that is your ego talking.” To me, this is a fundamental misconception that guarantees suffering for anyone that believes that we are not perfect. In order to believe that you are imperfect, there is implicit in that belief that we are flawed and somehow have not lived up to some standard imposed by others. Therefore the creative forces in the universe have created something that is flawed and subconsciously you believe God is failed.

***Nonjudgment

Many books, seminars, workshops, and meditations concentrate on the power of forgiveness. Even I have taught numerous workshops and written about forgiveness. Forgiveness allows us to let go of resentments and negative thinking that will eventually make us sick. The notion is that we have to forgive everyone who has harmed us, including ourselves. I have come to the realization that philosophy only scratches the surface and needs deeper analysis.

This year, for the 57th year in a row, I have decided to get fit, lose the fat shaped like an inflated inner tube around my abdomen, and not be afraid to take my shirt off in public this summer. I still have self-image issues despite all of this knowledge.

***HOPE

I was contemplating my navel the other day and realized how much we have going for us in this universe. The truth is that no matter what your circumstances, this is a kind universe and everyone in it has the primary motivation to work in favor of a peaceful, bountiful life. The only obstacles in our way are created by the projection of fear into our present and future circumstances. Granted we are far away from universal peace and cooperation, but happiness is readily available anytime we want it. Love is pouring into all of us in amounts hard to perceive much less feel.

***Over Thinking

Many of us are affected by a terrible affliction, a disease that causes suffering and misery in billions of people. The most amazing symptom of this disease is that most people don’t even know that they have it. Other symptoms include headaches, stress, restlessness, heartburn, ulcers and other digestive issues, loss of sleep, shortness of breath, memory loss, low self-esteem, substance abuse, and absent-mindedness. It is a condition loosely described as “obsessive thinking.” This is not to be confused with obsessive compulsive disorder, although I believe the two are linked.

I have come to realize that this is the way of the victim and only fosters victim consciousness.
