Attending networking events and making connections with people who could potentially provide you with referrals isn't automatic, either. Just like everything else to do with your business, it's hard work! But it doesn't have to be drudgery. Once you start asking for and listening for the openings to make a request, it becomes a habit that will help you expand your business and increase profits.

Making Ourselves Accountable to Achieving Our Goals

Looking through magazines for gift ideas recently, I stumbled upon something I hadn't seen in years, a glass piggybank. I recall receiving one when I opened my first savings account as a child. It forced me to continue to save because I didn't want to 'break' it until it was completely full, or until I had enough to purchase something I really wanted. My eyes were always on the prize.

Can I Get a Second Chance at a First Impression?

The short answer to that question is, 'no' - it is what it is. A first impression is what you project to someone whenever they are first connected to you. Especially if you're in a B2B-type business, it's important to remember that your body language, the words you speak, and the way you present yourself (hair, clothing, if online, through your copy), etc., are what people will immediately judge.

The Reputation of Ethics

I recently received a ‘chain’ E-mail from an associate, an elected official in a nearby community, offering me a $20 Applebee’s gift certificate if I forwarded this official, signed by the owner of Applebee’s E-mail, to nine of my friends and family. It said that Applebee’s was looking to increase awareness in rural areas by offering this free giveaway. I immediately wondered how anyone, or Applebee’s for that matter, would know I was in a rural area by my e-mail address. And how would anyone know whether or not I’d sent it to nine, and not eight, of my friends and family?

According to research released recently by O2, the mobile phone provider (“Small Businesses are Catching Twitter Bug,” Richard Tyler, The Telegraph, 16 March 2009), almost one in five small businesses now tweet regularly. Creating Our Value

Value is a funny thing. We look for it everywhere we go – if it’s not a good value, or doesn’t provide us with benefits, we keep moving. I wonder why it is we don’t feel WE have a value?
