What's Self-Esteem Got To Do With It?

“I don’t think I can do that,” says Shirley. n“Does it matter what you think or does it matter what you do?” I replied. n“I never thought of it like that. I know I should do this; I guess I just don’t think I’m good enough.” Shirley confessed. To which I replied, “Who asked you what you ...

What’s so H.A.R.D. about Change?

Why does change have to be so darn hard? We struggle to lose weight, get in shape, eliminate debt and stay (happily) married. Health issues such as heart disease, depression, addiction and obesity - preventable illnesses – are rampant. Why is it so hard to change? The answer to this question describing eight strategies for success can be found in my new book, Does Change have to be so H.A.R.D.?, now available in bookstores.

Which Is Harder: MAKING a Change or SUSTAINING the Change?

My aunt and I had lunch the other day. We were discussing weight loss and I mentioned my fear of regaining the forty pounds I have worked so hard to lose when she said, “It’s easy to lose weight; the hard part is keeping it off.” In my many years as an addictions nurse, I have always said that the hardest thing to do is to GET clean – to make the change and give up an addiction – and that it is much EASIER to maintain the change by staying clean one day at a time. So which is harder – making a change or sustaining the change?

Leadership Strategies: A Productivity Model

In 2005, as president of the Philadelphia Chapter of the International Coach Federation, I held a meeting with the Board of Directors because in some areas we seemed to be hitting snags in accomplishing our objectives. While people were working hard and committed to achieving our goals, we were off base with some of our efforts. People needed to be focused and reoriented so I designed an outline for understanding productivity in a more strategic manner. When operating as part of a high level team, it’s essential that all parties are on the same page and operating in harmony.

A Matter of Thought

It has been echoed through the ages that what we think about is what we bring about and our thoughts actually create our reality. James Allen’s book, “As A Man Thinketh” was written in the late 19th century to communicate this concept at great length. Steven Covey calls it the “first creation”, ...

Don’t Forget to Care

‘Care’ or compassion is an essential ingredient in the profession of nursing as well as many other caring professions. Without compassion, you might as well come up with another name for “nurse” because without “care” it’s not “nursing”. But it’s not just nursing that requires compassion, or caring professions for that matter. Everyone you interact with over the course of your day has the right to some level of respect. Oftentimes, people are so focused on their own agenda that they forget they are dealing with other human beings with their own agenda and priorities.

Let Go of Your Need to Be Right

Have you ever had an argument? It’s a silly question, for sure. Everyone has. You know, in that moment, when you’re so sure that you’re right, when you just wish the other person would hear you - your version of reality, that is, your right way of looking at the world. If they would only understand the world the way you do, everything would be fine! But then, they are thinking the same thing in that moment, believing you should listen to them. Their way, after all, is the right way, the only way.

Lead with Values

What is important to you in life? Do you know what your values are? Values are those things that are priorities. These can be anything from nature and beauty, adventure, learning, having fun, or honor and integrity. You know these things because when you see them in others, they bring you joy. When you experience them for yourself, they bring you joy. And when you don’t have enough of them in your life, you feel empty, like life has lost meaning. Too often, however, we live life without our values leading the way.

Focus on What You Want Rather Than What You Fear

"I have a new boss. With recent layoffs and downsizing, my boss gave up my area to a new director. My head is swimming with thoughts about how she will treat me, what she will expect. I'm nervous that she will find a way to get rid of me. I'm just so scared of what might happen with this new change." All of us can relate to feelings of fear especially when they are born from thoughts about change that is out of our control.

Winning the Battle in Your Mind

“When I try to do the work, to approach a task or push through my procrastination, a battle ensues in my mind. I wind up feeling so intimidated that I take a seat and let the battle go on. I get so distracted that I’m paralyzed and I don’t get done whatever I wanted to do. It’s limiting – it limits my ability to set goals and to dream of new things in my life. It tears me down and I feel like I have no control – that my life is out of my control.

Five Steps Toward Eliminating Overwhelm

Overwhelmed? It happens to the best of us at times. Some people live in a constant state of overwhelm. Knowing yourself, being aware of your abilities, and creating an environment that nurtures your success can help to alleviate or minimize overwhelm. You also must learn to stand up for yourself and create good boundaries with your time and your workload. This can be quite difficult for people who enjoy pleasing others, who seek reassurance and approval from others, or who have an inner barometer that just doesn’t know when to say “no.” Overwhelm means you need to simplify.
