Summer BBQ Fare With Flair

What's the perfect recipe for summer? Beaches, a little pool and of course a good barbeque. But how do you enjoy the tastes of summer and keep calories in check at the same time? As a registered dietitian, I like to say, everything is okay as long as you have it in moderation. Whether you are the host or a guest, it can be easy to over-pile the portions onto your plate. Make wholesome and wise choices and adopt what I call "buffet discipline." Here are my personal tips for enjoying a balanced barbecue that still includes all of the fixings. Have a Plan

Choose Gratitude for Well-Being

As you celebrate the holidays and plan for a healthier more active you in the new year, give yourself a timeout. Take time to step away from the frenetic hustle and bustle and think seriously about gratitude during the year that is ending. One of my many caveats with my clients is to remind them that the well-being life has many facets and gratitude is one of the important elements.

Emotional Well-Being Is Key to Healthy You

In our daily quest for the well-being lifestyle, we often overlook our emotional well-being. In counseling my clients, I often remind them to step back and enjoy the moment. With the techie advantages we enjoy we are always on----Flex hours at work give us the ability to start earlier and work later; email synced with mobile devices allows us to be connected around the clock, every single day. And let's get real, sometimes we want to take a time out--- we need to take a time out and unplug from the continuous connections for our emotional well-being.

The Rap on Berries

I have to admit the “what’s cooking” question can challenge the best of us in the food universe, but a visit to the farmer’s market can provide the solution in solving this dining dilemma. On my most recent visit I was drawn to the raspberries and blueberries.

Coffee, Wine, Weed & Health

The past few weeks have included buzz-worthy info on coffee, wine, weed and health. The three stimulants can be addictive, enjoy a robust retail market (weed in limited states) and may have health benefits. My clients and readers of this blog know my mantra—“There is no one thing that is all good or all bad and moderation is the key.” Though the research on the three is still a work in progress, the following is a brief overview of how they can impact your health. Clean Eating, What’s it All About?

There has been a lot of chatter about clean eating and when you ask the omniscient Google, the search engine kicks out more than 61 million responses. In responding to my clients’ inquiries I try to rely on the “keep it simple” mantra—Clean eating is founded on the concept of being mindful of the route food travels from its point of origin to your plate. How has the food been processed, if at all, is the food enhanced with any added ingredients or supplements, how close is the food to its original form?

Here's to His Health

In sharing the gospel of a healthy lifestyle I often make presentations at health fairs and on-site workplace settings. Most often the audience is female. As most of us know with our men, subtle often does not work. Typically for the fellas to get the message our approach needs to focus on what's in it for them. In selling men on a healthier lifestyle, they need to be reminded that "food can make the man." Food is not just about providing the fuel the body needs-wise food choices will aid in keeping men active, looking younger and aging well.

Store Peak Tomatoes and Herbs for Year 'Round Good Eating

During these waning days of summer, I'm being a bit greedy, trying to get my fill of the fresh flavors of locally grown fruit and vegetables. Fresh is good-but forward thinking folks go a step further and "put up" some of these goodies. Tomatoes are one of the best choices to preserve-you can't enjoy a fresh slice on a sandwich, but in sauce, pizza, soup, chili or nachos the ones you've preserved will punch up the flavor a lot more than off-season options from the supermarket.

What's the Dish on Ice Cream?

One sure sign of summer is ice cream. And in the U.S. folks manage to consume plenty of it -approximately 12 lbs. per capita/person. If you're an enthusiast for the flavored frozen treat you know that indulging in rocky road can create a few lumps and bumps on the bod faster than ice cream melts in hot weather. For those of you who are with me on the "I love ice cream" bus, knowing the scoop on the available choices in the freezer case can help you make wise decisions on what to choose.

Dish Up Good Taste and Flavor for Healthy Eating

March is National Nutrition Month and one of the keys in making nutritious choices is taste. Does it taste good? According to the dictionary taste is the ability to identify sweet, sour, bitter, or salty qualities of a dissolved substance through the taste buds, on the tongue. In addition to the four, a fifth savory quality, called umami is also recognized. Although each of these qualities is a factor of "taste," smell is a significant part of how we perceive what we taste, or the flavor of foods.

In the pink is pervasive this month. According to Dictionary.com, the idiom is actually "in the pink of health." Early to Bed Adds Up to Good Health

Now when I started this article the other day it was late---too late to chat about sleep deprivation. I just couldn't give advice when I was absolutely doing the opposite. I went to bed. In what seemed like a few minutes I was awakened. It was not the alarm but a phone call at 4 a.m. from a family member locked out of their house!! How ironic is that? I go to bed to get some sleep and end up awake and on the road to take a set of house keys to someone. It was probably sleep deprivation that caused her to forget the keys. How much sleep do we need?

DIET Is a FOUR-LETTER WORD

There are words we like to discourage using. Particularly troublesome are the four letter words. One that folks really hate using is the "Diet" word. As a matter of fact, research from the NPD Group shows that in 2012, only 23 percent of women say they were on a diet. When women were surveyed in 1992, 34 percent said they were dieting. Now this is not to say folks don't need to diet, but attitudes have changed.
