The Inclusion of Emotional Learning in Our Schools

Tragic events related to the lack of emotion or emotional control has been making the news, very bad news, in our schools for years. Who doesn’t remember Columbine or Virginia Tech? However, many of the struggles educators deal with on a daily basis, rarely reach the headlines. Behavior problems are so normal that they have been included in the curriculum; the hidden, silent curriculum of write ups, in-school and out of school suspensions, and “severe” administrative consequences.

H for a Meaningful Life

Resting on the slopes of the Himalayas, the kingdom of Bhutan emerges as the happiest place on earth. Isolated from the world until the late sixties, this relatively small country has found the recipe for a happy and meaningful life, and it is precisely its happiness levels what measures their personal and collective success. How could this be possible in a country with one of the smallest economies in the world? What could we learn from these people to achieve their state of bliss?

Staying Centered in a Blurry Environment

This week I have been in what I call the quiet observer mood; some kind of personal retreat when I just listen and try to get connected to everything around me. So I limit my time online and try not to get into the public flow of local or worldwide news. This, as I've confirmed, is an almost impossible task. Everywhere I go, in some way, people are talking about some common topics; immigration law, the civil war in Syria or the catastrophic weather the nation is experiencing. It seems there is no safe haven to hear something positive that would lift us up.

Transforming a Culture of Solitude

Over the years we have been living in a culture of me. Blame industrialization? We have become a “me- centered” society which only in turbulent times seem to come together. Isn't it tragic that only tragedy can bring us together? We have forgotten the basis of what brought us here in the first place; community and belonging. Instead we strive for more, more of everything but what really matters. We have all been victims of that sickness that has turned us into lonely beings in search of something we can’t seem to figure out.

Accelerated Learning to Distress Education

Add more water and our brain will fill up with more oxygen. More oxygen will keep us alert. This applies to all human beings but if you are an educator you really need to keep this in mind. Alertness is not the only aspect of human behavior teachers should keep an eye on.

Happiness 101: Bounce Back

There are many reasons why at some points in your life you feel sad, depressed, faithless, and trapped. Most of these situations are self-created. Most of these feelings are self-inflicted. Do you remember that first scary ride on your brand new bike? How many times did you fall? How many bruises witnessed your uncountable tries? What did you do then? You got back up, grabbed the wheel, and kept trying until one bright morning you became the master. Where is the spirit of that child now?

What is it Like Being You?

Do you like yourself? Do you love the person you are with all your weaknesses and strengths? One of our worst mistakes as a human race is non-acceptance. Every day we wake up looking at a strange reflection in the mirror. We don't like what we see, want to change it but don't know how or why. Most women, as well as men I have met, live in constant criticism of themselves. They complain about some extra inches here and there, about the premature wrinkles, their families, jobs, and their entire surrounding environment.

Re-Thinking Patterns

I remember my grandmother’s kitchen cabinet, stacked with a lineup of white coffee cups. She would say something like, “there’s no room for colored cups there; all need to be the same, everything needs to match.” By age 12, I brought my favorite cup, a round deep blue with sunflowers designs on it. It was destined to be moved to a separate shelve because it didn't match, didn't belong with the rest.

The Paradox of Practical Spirituality

I don’t usually speak or write about religious matters. I have learned that it is a sensitive topic for many who feel insulted or threaten so if I have to, I always state that I respect and honor all religious beliefs as well as the believers. Today, however, a memory landed in my mind and I guess it was for a reason. Young enough I came to realize the difference between being religious versus being spiritual. As a child, I witnessed many scenes of religious, devoted individuals, faithful church goers and contributors.

Mothering 101

When I look back at all the criticism and self inflicted guilt I put myself through when I had my first child at tender eighteen, all I could do is laugh and be grateful for those moments. Over the years of steep hills and unknown roads, I have discovered that one on my noblest missions in life was just that; to be a mother. I will never have all the right answers but I do have four wonderful grown up kids who are a faithful testimony of my own growing process as a mother, woman, and a better spiritual being. My children have taught me many lessons, not all have come to me the easy way.

Questions to Live By

Effective communication has been one of humanity’s biggest problems. As intelligent beings we have failed in establishing empowered and honest verbal and physical exchanges that could lead to a better understanding among diverse individuals. The problem though begins with our own self. How could we be able to communicate in compelling ways with others if we don’t do it first with the person we are supposed to know best? Know thyself!

The Wind of Change

Nietzsche referred to the wind as the ‘very stuff of human freedom.” In ancient cultures it has been named as “the power of the spirit”, the messenger of the gods.” In modern times, the wind is the manifestation of energy, rising from the center of power. It brings regeneration. Our power to change depends on our internal wind flow and our willingness to work with the current of energy within.

Rollercoster Ride

I have never being the detailed life planner type but, three months ago, I thought I had everything on schedule to embark on a new adventure. You see, from time to time, we all need to turn the wheels and add some extra spice to our daily routine. I decided to resign to my too old in my calendar job, one that was literally consuming me and surrounding my whole self with a huge bundle of negativity. I packed my suitcases to fly to the other side of the world, where a land of mystery would be opening her arms to me. I closed my ears to the complains and weird looks around me.
