“Some people have a wonderful capacity to appreciate again and again, freshly and naively, the basic goods of life, with awe, pleasure, wonder, and even ecstasy.” - A.H. Maslow. As I reflect on the upcoming Thanksgiving Day celebration, I reflect on the above quote and think about Lisa. Lisa Ryan is The Appreciation Strategist and is my best friend. She is the Maslow quote personified. Her mission in life is to help people realize the power of gratitude in their businesses and in their lives. She lives it daily and challenges others to do the same.
“Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force...When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand. Ideas actually begin to grow within us and come to life...When we listen to people there is an alte ating current, and this recharges us so that we never get tired of each other...and it is this little creative fountain inside us that begins to spring and cast up new thoughts and unexpected laughter and wisdom.
On three occasions in the last month I have met people who have referenced stuff they learned from the rules and structure of improvisational comedy. Once is rare, twice, is an interesting coincidence, but, three times is a pattern that is worth looking into.

Have you ever met anyone like this person who has tapped the ‘deep well where passion lives’? They have that quiet energy, that charisma that tells you that they have found the secret. They are living in a place where knowledge, skills and talent are all working in perfect harmony, passionately pursuing their dreams. Have you met someone like that? Are you someone like that? It’s wonderful to be in their presence isn’t it?
See a Glimpse into Your Future If you think you don't know what you want for the future, think again. Your subconscious knows more than you think. Ten minutes, a pen and a paper will act as a crystal ball for your ideal future in five years. Print these instructions do the exercise and then share your future surprises. It's fun and it works! This is a nonstop writing exercise. The key to having this work is that you write NONSTOP for ten minutes. It is a stream of consciousness exercise that will awaken the creative right side of your brain.
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Thomas Alva Edison. My father-in-law had a dream. He talked about this dream a lot. He would go back in his mind remembering when the dream was still alive. He would tell of how close he got to his dream with a slight memory smile on his face. Then, when he got to the part of the story where he decided to give up on his dream, his face and voice took on the sadness of incredible regret.

I struggled for months trying to learn the deep dark secrets of inte et marketing. I had been a consultant and a coach for 28 years, but had always gotten my business by old school methods. When I started the Redwood Sisterhood, the only thing new to me was inte et marketing. That’s all. That was enough.
“Joint Ventures are in, and if you’re not utilizing this strategic weapon, chances are your competition is, or will soon be, using this to their advantage…possibly against you!” Valerie Orsoni-Vauthey. If the number one way to build your business is to grow your mailing list, the number one way to grow it quickly is to employ joint venture strategies. Simply explained, a joint venture is when two or more parties agree to promote each other to their mailing lists.

If you truly want to be a dream partner, you will ask the hard questions; the deep questions. The questions that will move someone off the dime, get them moving, help them see something in a new and challenging way. Don't just ask what is your challenge? Ask how does that challenge impact your life? How does it get in your way?

They become your informal sales force and, done properly, you become theirs. The right person's word of mouth can be just enough to take you to epidemic levels of success. If I plan to endorse you to my friends, family, colleagues and Redwood Sisters, I want to know that you are worthy of that endorsement. So, first and foremost, you better have integrity.

Sure, it's a lot easier to stay in your comfort zone.. in my case, business suits and real estate.. but sometimes you have to take risks. I’m not really sure why, but I have set about to write it 3 posts ago, and I am finally putting this out there. This one may make you squirm. Stop wishing and start believing. Wishing is for little girls in pigtails. Wishing is in the fantasy realm and believing is in the action realm.
Being clear about your personal or organizational mission can catapult you toward success. It will give you focus and help you to know what work is inside and outside of your niche, and keep you on track. So, whether you are a small business owner or solopreneur or a nonprofit executive, this next exercise will help you clarify your mission. Mission statements don't need to be long, boring or dust collectors. They can be vibrant statements that actually give you direction. Allow them to become the guiding values of your goals in work and life.
Have you seen that classical Christmas time film it’s a Wonderful Life? George Bailey has the seemingly perfect life: a loving wife, Mary, four beautiful children, and his own business. However, on Christmas Eve, George has serious business difficulties at the Bailey Building and Loan. George has a major financial crisis when his Uncle Billy loses the cash they owe the bank. The unsympathetic bank owner, Mr. Potter makes things worse. This leads George to a life crisis, and he considers suicide.
“Ideas are the beginning points of all fortunes.” ~ Napoleon Hill. Last year I was in a meeting with a bunch of business owners and leaders from different industries and backgrounds. One guy was celebrating that his new patented surgical device adapted for premature babies for heart and brain operations had just been picked up by 3 local hospitals. Not only would this save countless babies lives by making very serious operations for such small delicate babies much safer, it was going to be very lucrative for his company. That was one good idea right?
The Consumer Driven Strategic Planning Model© was created by Patty Sadallah in the mid 1980’s as a way to help non-profits to understand that they cannot plan in a vacuum. Too many organizations were working through their strategic planning processes without considering the exte al factors affecting their industries, neighborhoods and economies. And, they were making it WAY too complicated. It is really a matter of having your board and staff leadership work through a series of questions in a certain order and before too long, you have a viable working strategic plan.

At a recent Redwood Sisterhood breakfast, I challenged the ladies to set an outrageous 90 day goal. What is an outrageous goal? It’s a goal that is so challenging, yet doable, that it nearly makes you want to throw up with anxiety. Why would I want you to nearly throw up with anxiety? Because stretching yourself to just beyond where you think you can go makes you get there.

There are actually two secrets in todays post: the first is to know what you want and the second is to work hard to get it. Successful people are very clear about what they want and day by day they work toward it. Part of knowing what you want is knowing who you are. Your dream is an extention of you. Your ideal client is a reflection of you. What would you want to do if you knew you couldn't fail? Who do you see yourself being in the future? A CEO?

For some the measure is money related. They imagine themselves making six figures while others image seven. For others, the ceiling is related to a job or role title. They just see themselves as working on the line, never daring to jump up a level of management. As Henry Ford once said; "If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right." So, what is your mental glass ceiling?

I was talking the other day to a group of ladies who were kvetching about the economy and the problems they were having with their businesses. Times are tough, but, I left that meeting thinking about how many ways these ladies and even I get in the way of success. I was in a Beth Moore bible study last night and she was talking about spiritual learning disabilities and it made me think metaphorically about success disabilities. Do you have one or more of these success disabilities?

Last week, I visited my mom in a rehab nursing facility. She’s recovering there from a hip replacement surgery. There was a man playing piano in the activities room and he was fantastic. But, there was someone there that made me smile even more than the piano man. She was dancing with the biggest beam on her face, remembering.

Our intact group of students had spent two years learning how to be Organization Development Consultants and this exercise was the last one of our final class on Career Development. How would we put into motion, all that we had learned and turn it into a lifelong passionate career?

There is plenty to be fearful about in this world today; sickness, the economy, global realities. Facing your fears is not the same as succumbing to them. To face your fears is to acknowledge them, take stock of them, grieve and analyze them, but never let them beat you.

Stop looking for a magic bullet recipe that will attract clients or advance your career. "Instead, hone your craft, develop your expertise or build your skills to such an extent that clients and colleagues will brag about you and your value." Michael Hughes. Testimonials are free and they are gold. If I were to go on and on about how great I am, I bet you would roll your eyes. Somehow when we toot our own horn, it's a bit off putting to people.
“You just have to be opportunistic, and try to figure out what creates value... Where the bottom is, what creates incremental value, and in what combinations.”~ John Malone. Did you know that bloodhounds are the animal kingdoms best detectives? They have a sense of smell that is 40 times more sensitive than humans. They take in scent information and are absolutely relentless until they find the source of that scent. They are so accurate in their ability to track people and things with their superior snouts that their findings are admissible in a court of law.
"A good leader inspires others with confidence in him; a great leader inspires them with confidence in themselves." Unknown. Have you ever seen someone else's greatness, but they just can't see it themselves? My mom was a well known and respected real estate broker and business owner a few decades back. She was really really good at selling homes. When I was fresh out of college, my job was to be a real estate trainer for her real estate agency. I didn't know the first thing about real estate so I would follow my mother around and observe her in action. She was masterful.
"Humility is the quality that will enable you and others to enjoy your success." Charlie Tremendous Jones. I know this person that loves to boast. I'm sure you know someone like her too. She's always bragging about how much money she has or the car that she drives. She'll tell you how talented she is and no one is as good as her at this or that. Think for a moment about your last encounter with someone like that. OK, now imagine that you are standing on a teeter totter. You are balancing in the middle.

Habit. Yikes. For most of us, this word is associated with nail biting or smoking. We all have bad habits. And once they are ingrained in our daily routines, it is so hard to break them. Do you struggle with a bad habit that may be keeping you from succeeding in your dream business? How about the habit of putting off calling your prospects? Do you have a habit of putting off writing blog posts or newsletters to your list on a regular basis? I know that I can struggle with those two challenges myself. Here are some wise words to inspire you:
“It's not what's happening to you now or what has happened in your past that determines who you become. Rather, it's your decisions about what to focus on, what things mean to you, and what you're going to do about them that will determine your ultimate destiny.” Tony Robbins. My mother is a photographer by hobby. So, we always had cameras lying around the house when I was growing up. Not the kind of cameras that we have today that automatically focus for you.
"The most expensive piece of real estate is the six inches between your right and left ear. It’s what you create in that area that determines your wealth. We are only really limited by our mind." -Dolf de Roos. What will it take for you to acheive your dream? Will it take a few classes or a higher education? Maybe it will take thinking outside the box, or taking a huge risk. I like to partner with people who love to learn and challenge themselves all the time. There is creativity and excitement in learning.
"We must give more in order to get more. It is the generous giving of ourselves that produces the generous harvest." Orison Swett Marden. Giving of yourself not only benefits others, it benefits you. Not only do you feel good because you have helped others, but you have deposited something in the other person's emotional bank account. Giving is good for your self esteem, your health, your overall well being and it makes you more likable.
“Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.” C. S. Lewis. Did you make any mistakes today? Who doesn’t? We are imperfect people living in an imperfect world. Do you realize that failure is really only failure if you don’t learn something from it? With the right mindset, you can go through your entire life without ever really failing. If things came too easy for you, you would never be challenged to improve?
“When a paradigm shifts, everything goes back to zero. “ Joel Barker. In his now famous video from 1988 called Discovering the Future: The Business of Paradigms, Joel Barker introduced the concept of paradigm shifts into the business vocabulary. A paradigm is a set of rules and boundaries and the problem solving system for being successful within those rules.
“One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.” ~Abraham Maslow. On vacation last summer, my family was planning a parasailing adventure. I was planning to sit in the boat and watch them go up. I am afraid of heights, so it just seemed too scary for me. That morning, while I was sitting by the pool, a lady in her 70’s was sitting next to me. We got to talking about parasailing and she said that she had just gone the day before at it was such a thrill.
“Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience life's deepest joy: true fulfillment.” Tony Robbins. We all serve in some fashion. But, have you noticed that some people serve better than others. They serve with more sincerity, with more willingness, while others seem to be serving out of some selfish motive. What a turn off. By way of analogy, let’s look at the worldviews of the dog and the cat. Let’s look at the world through the eyes of a dog for a moment: The dog observes that the owner feeds, cares and loves him.
Nothing is more annoying to me than showing up to a networking event only to have people spend all of there time puffing themselves up and trying to sell you something on the spot. That kind of 'networking' doesn't work for me, and I bet it doesn't work for you. Are you ready for the first secret to effective networking? Secret #1: Stop networking for yourself and start networking for other people. Networking is a relationship building interaction.
