The Integral Yoga: Development Beyond the Yoga of the Bhagavad Gita

While the Bhagavad Gita provides a strong foundation for the spiritual practice of the Integral Yoga, it was developed within a context of time, place and circumstance that brought it to a certain stage of human evolution and potential. Today, the teachings of the Gita remain relevant, but do not provide the ultimate answers as to the evolutionary process and the role of the human individual within that process. Sri Aurobindo shows that the ancient sages had glimpses and indications of the further steps in the process, but did not focus on them or develop them in their fullness at the time.

The Process of Bringing About Change at the Subconscious Level of Our Being

Anyone who has taken up the practice of meditation is familiar with the attempt to quiet the mind and not pay attention to thoughts that arise during the process, letting them drift through without being followed or amplified in any way. One quickly realises during the process that we tend to get ‘caught up’ in the thoughts and catch ourselves following them and have to bring ourselves back to the process of the meditation.

Do We Know What We Seek in Our Lives?

We feel like something is missing in our lives. It could be something material, it could be just a pang of hunger or thirst. It could be a sense of emotional emptiness, unattached to a specific object. We may feel like we need to find out something, do something, know something, respond to something, although we are not quite sure exactly what it is. This sense of emptiness occurs to everyone at various times of life. In some cases, where it is attached to a specific desire we can identify what it is we seek. But in many cases, it is vague, amorphous, undefined.

How to Tread the Sunlit Path of Yoga

There are no exemptions from the issues, obstacles and difficulties that attend the work of bringing forth a new evolutionary principle and thereby impacting, changing and vastly reorganizing the existing status quo of the mind-life-body complex in the world. The issues must be addressed. The individual, however, may deal with these issues differently, based on how embedded he is in the existing ego-personality versus his ability to separate himself and shift his standpoint towards the divine standpoint.

The Existential Crisis of Humanity and the Evolution of Consciousness

Thank you for your interest in this critical issue for the future survival of our entire human race. There is a positive way forward for humanity as we face the intense challenges before us. When we are under intense pressure we have the impetus to make needed changes. That is the lesson of Nature, and the lesson of human history. What do we each worry about as we live our lives? We worry about our health and that of our family. We don’t generally tie our health issues to our environment, but there is a clear link.r

Freeing the Mind from Subjection to the Life-Force and the Body

The development of the vital, life-force integrated with the physical domain led to changes in the physical in order to accommodate the action of this new energy. At the same time, the life-force had to itself make adjustments in order to operate in the material world as opposed to in its own domain independent of Matter. These adjustments limited the power and scope of the vital, while expanding the capabilities of expression in the material world.

The Superman: an Evolutionary Leap Is Not Limited to the Mind’s Extrapolation from Its Present Status

The human mind has difficulty imagining the possibility of an entirely new direction for evolutionary development, and tends to try to “read” the future by extrapolation from the present and the past. Thus, we see Nietzsche describing the “superman” as someone who has a higher mental functioning and vital force of effectuation, who then has the “right” and the “power” to disregard the strictures of the society’s structure because he has gone “beyond” them.

The Power of the Quiet Mind and Vital to Resolve Problems We Face

We are habitually conditioned to try to solve problems with our mental capacity. We are taught to observe, organize, classify, compare and contrast, and examine similar past circumstances in order to determine a solution to whatever we are facing. This is the normal pattern for a mentally developed individual. Those who function primarily on the vital level do not necessarily go through this detailed process, but respond through what may be called instinct, feeling or emotional reaction. In either case, we oftentimes find that the result is less than satisfactory.

Intuition

The popular idea about intuition is tied to some kind of unexplainable process of "knowing" that people go through. If it is purely based in the type of extrapolation from past experience, or some sense that drives the decision without careful and logical analysis, it is still based in the normal activity of the mind, life and body, using memory, instinct, and trained responses as a foundation for fast and unthinking response.

Infinite Grace: Overcoming the Law of Inertia to Effectuate Change

The law of inertia holds that it takes energy to move something that is stationary, and the more massive the object is, the more energy required to move it. A similar principle operates in human actions. We have our fixed habits, whether physical habits, instincts, trained responses, preconceived notions, biases, determined routines, etc. that represent our ‘status quo’. This all operates essentially on its own, as the same law of holds that a body in motion tends to stay in motion.

To Be Conscious

When we reflect upon what we really know about our existence, our lives, our purpose, the forces at work in the world and in us, the influences to which we are being subjected constantly, and the way we respond to these influences without conscious awareness, it becomes clear that we act out of a primary status of ignorance.

Developing Harmonious Relationships with Close Family, Friends and Associates

Even among those closest to one another, there remain differences of habit and temperament. Issues of personal grooming, dietary choices, choices in music or other media interactions, time commitments, interactions about caring for the common shared space all work to create minor daily irritations or even conflicts. Add to this interpersonal differences in intimate relationships and comfort within one’s own personal space and it is easy to see that achieving and maintaining harmony in relationships requires both constant awareness and a willingness to accept differences with equanimity.

Understanding Vital Dissatisfaction and Withdrawal of Energy

There are times when we feel a total lack of inspiration and energy. Dullness pervades, there is no initiative or interest in anything. These times come in the ordinary day to day life, but they are covered up with distractions, entertainment, intoxication, and vital forms of enjoyment. The vital nature thrives on such distractions generally, so the dullness, boredom, lack of drive are forgotten in the excitement of the vital stimuli.

The Development of Individuality Within the Human Race

In various parts of the world, homes and buildings have a clear ‘identity’, through shape, color, size, layout of the rooms, functionality, and location. In other places we see vast tracts of virtually identical houses or apartments in rows, with the same size, shape, color and layout. Someone trying to locate a house or apartment in such a location can easily be confused as to which one they are trying to find, and, except for the identifying numerical address, it can be a daunting affair.

Exploring the Nature of the Dream State

Dreams have kept researchers awake for the entire history of mankind. Where do dreams come from? Of what substance are they made? What significance do they have? The ancient Greek culture had oracles who interpreted dreams. The Old Testament of the Bible recounts the rise of Joseph in the land of Egypt through his ability to interpret the dreams of the Pharoah, and help the land prepare during seven years of plenty for a following seven years of drought.

Illness Is a Deformation of the Physical Nature

When an individual takes up a spiritual path, he has to work through the seemingly fine lines of distinction that the various prescriptions and directions for progress along the path appear to carry. For example, ‘equality’ and ‘equanimity’ are counseled as essential characteristics for progress. This leads some individuals, for a time, to take these terms to extremes that were never intended, due to the dogmatic nature of the mental understanding, the desire to have a clear cut, uniform and neatly defined process for the needed progress.

The Surface Consciousness and the Subliminal

Human awareness can be compared to an iceberg on the physical plane. The iceberg appears small and insignificant above the surface of the ocean, yet it is massive below the surface, as was found out by the ‘unsinkable’ cruise ship, the Titanic during its maiden voyage. Similarly, the awareness we have on the surface, that deals with relationships with the outer world, perceptions, impressions, actions, events and the development of our plans for responding to these things, is a very small part of total consciousness.

The Gods and the Demons in Our Inner Psychology

We find in the ancient Indian epic, Ramayana, an interesting sub-plot which changes the very complexion of what appears to be a battle between ‘good’ personified by Rama and his family, and ‘evil’ as personified by Ravana and his kin. As we delve deeper into the tale, we find that Ravana was himself a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Yet the story goes even deeper. It turns out that Ravana in a past lifetime was a doorkeeper for Lord Vishnu, attending closely and with great devotion in Vishnu’s heavenly abode, along with his brother Kumbaka a.

The Resolution of the Opposition of Free Will and Determinism

As long as we remain rooted in the exte al surface consciousness and ego-personality, we are firmly bound by the determinism of Nature. Nature, whether on the physical, vital or mental level, operates under its own ‘laws’ of action. The more dense the expression of consciousness is, the more ‘fixed’ those laws become. Thus, Matter has what appear to be fixed and unalterable laws that govern the way that Matter acts in the universal creation.

The Awakening of the Soul to a Greater Life and Purpose

Until an aspiration awakens in the being, we tend to go about our lives taking cues from the promptings of family, friends, community, religion, or schools. Introduction to Living Within: the Yoga Approach to Psychological Health and Growth by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, compiled by Dr. A.S. Dalal

What is psychological health and growth? Western psychology tends to define psychological health as the absence of various forms of extreme disturbance or disruption. ‘Normal” levels of dissatisfaction, upset-ness, are considered to be both acceptable and part of everyday life. It is only when someone experiences a psychological state that drifts into total disorientation, violence, suicidal thoughts, or disassociation from the expectations of society that psychology labels the behavior as unhealthy or harmful.

Those who are more intellectually inclined may find that they naturally incline towards what is known as the yoga of knowledge. Those who have a nature more inclined to devotion and emotional expression may take up the yoga of love and devotion. Those who have an active vital nature will probably find that the yoga of works is the best path.

The viewer of such films is captivated by this technology to such an extent that he begins to identify with characters being portrayed and begins to feel and experience things from the viewpoint of that character. Getting in Touch with the Inner, Subliminal Mind, Life and Physical Consciousness

In his epic poem Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol, Sri Aurobindo describes the experience of the awareness moving inwards away from the surface consciousness fixated on exte al perceptions. “In moments when the inner lamps are lit And the life’s cherished guests are left outside, Our spirit sits alone and speaks to its gulfs. A wider consciousness opens then its doors; Invading from spiritual silences A ray of the timeless Glory stoops awhile To commune still with our seized illumined clay And leaves its huge white stamp upon our lives.” (Savitri, Book I, Canto IV, pp. 47-48)

How Do We Determine Our Destined Role in the World? — Part 2

One reason we do not have a sense of our purpose or role in the world, generally, is that we do not examine deeply our inner predilections or the trajectory of our lives. We interpret our lives based on exte al criteria and motives without appreciating that there is another driving force behind that helps to create the circumstances, opportunities and directions we wind up taking in our lives. In some cases, we interpret ‘negative’ events as interfering with our lives, when in fact, they may be the prod that moves us into a more certain direction to grow into our life’s work.

Habits, Cravings, Addictions and the Subconscient

One of the big issues that all people face is dealing with cravings, habits and addictions and their effects in their lives. The mechanism at work here is not based on conscious decision-making, but on impulses, feelings and pulls that occur subconsciously, whether in the mind, the vital being, or the body. Certain habits may begin with a mental or vital acceptance, particularly as a result of peer pressure or tradition. Thus, many begin to utilize tobacco or alcohol, or other ‘recreational drugs’ as a result of the pressure from outside.

Fear and Fearlessness in Life and in Yoga

Fear arises in the lower vital, in some instances, as a direct vital response to an energy that threatens health and safety of the individual; in other words, it is part of the survival instinct. But it also arises through social acculturation, such as in issues of stage fright, or through imagination of situations that ‘might’ come about, based on societal habits and pressures. All of the various causes of fear, however, act upon the lower vital chakras and raise up biochemical responses which then impact the mind and the will-power.

The Nature of Divine Love

There is an apocryphal tale in the Mahabharata which illustrates the nature of Divine Love and the devotion of the seeker. Narad, the divine sage, came across a yogi who was practicing austerities. The yogi took the opportunity to ask how long before he would achieve liberation. When Narada told him it would be several lifetimes, he was distressed that after so many years of hard austerities, the result was still long in the future. Narad later came across a bhakta who was singing and dancing in praise of the Divine under a large tree.

The Link Between Inner Defects and Exte al Attacks of Adverse Forces

In order for any force or action to affect an individual, there must be something that links them together, attracting the energy that is exte al to the receiving station nexus of the individual body-life-mind complex. For purely material forces,, obviously, this connection is existence in the material world. Thus, any embodied individual can be impacted by severe weather or earthquakes or volcanos if they are within the area of the activity. The more subtle forces, those of the vital or mental realms, can impact an individual from a further distance.

Detachment from and Mastery of the Surface Nature

When we are first confronted with the concept of detachment from our exte al nature, we tend to approach it from a mental standpoint and thus, try to shut down our emotions and mental reactions with various types of response such as forms of stoicism, renunciation, or a show of non-caring, or some kind of overpowering of reactions including the use of self-torture to train the body-life-mind complex not to react. This is however, not a methodology that can succeed over the long term, and leads to abandonment or submission of the exte al being, rather than true mastery.

Are Our Thoughts Our Own?

The normal mental process begins relatively simply. We hear something and accept it in our minds, and eventually we repeat the thought to others and thus, a thought-form moves through the mental atmosphere and touches many minds. Teilhard de Chardin referred to the mental force permeating the world as a noosphere, and like the atmosphere, it girdles the earth and carries mental energies as forces which act upon those who are able to receive these thought forms.

Many who take up the practice of yogic sadhana find that they receive some signs of encouragement either prior to starting consciously down the path, through some kind of experience that opens other dimensions and opportunities for growth for them, or through some spiritual experiences in the early stages of the sadhana. Thereafter, it is quite usual for the experiences to recede and the slow, steady, patient work of aspiration, receptivity and dedication to the process takes over.

Receiving Spiritual Shocks and Trials With Humility Through a Shift of Standpoint Away from the Ego-Consciousness

The pressure of the outer circumstances provides the impetus for change.

They argue that this is a process in Nature that ensures the continuity of the race, they argue that the suppression of sexual expression leads to all kinds of perversions and criminality, including pedophilia, rape, or utilization of power dynamics to pressure others into sex. All of these arguments have some basis in fact.

There is a complex game called ‘chess’. The modern form of the game reputedly developed from a strategic game that appears to have originated in India in around the 6th or 7th century, although there were likely precursor forms that existed prior to that time. As a game of strategy, the object for the two players is to deploy their various game pieces, each having different basic powers of action, in order to gain control of the field and eventually conquer the opposing king. It is a game, simultaneously, consisting of offense and defense.

Bringing Harmony Between the Inner Psychic Being and the Exte al Nature

For Sri Aurobindo, truth of the spirit is to be lived, not attained by abandonment of life in the world. He looks at the evolution of body, life and mind as steps along the evolutionary process, and each one of them represents an important stage in an ongoing development. The action of these instruments is to be uplifted and perfected as new evolutionary powers enter into the world. The developed human being can participate consciously in this process, and thereby aid in bringing forth these new powers and transforming the nature and thereby the life in the world.

Liberation From and Mastery of the Exte al Nature of Man

Many religious and spiritual traditions focus on the idea of ‘liberation’ from bondage to the illusion of the exte al world and its enticements and attractions. In some cases, this takes the form of a vow of austerity and a focus on achieving redemption and access to heaven after one dies. In other cases, it involves the one-pointed focus on liberation with the abandonment of the active life in the world, a reduction of one’s needs down to a bare minimum, and in some cases, using a begging bowl to obtain food and accepting whatever, if anything, comes to one.
