Transitioning to the Silent Mind

Assume that we succeed, through various methods of meditation or concentration, to bring the mind into a status of relative quiet. At that moment we begin to notice that there is this other running commentary going on in the background, reacting to every sense impression, bodily sensation, nervous impulse, or simply regurgitating past things in some form. This is what Sri Aurobindo terms the ‘mechanical mind’ which keeps running like a machine even when our higher conscious intellect is calm.

The First Step In Organising One’s Life Around a Central Will or Aspiration

Those who have an aspiration for spiritual growth, for the change of human nature within themselves, eventually find that they cannot live haphazardly, at the mercy of whatever forces, impulses, ideas or thoughts happen to be moving within them at any point in time, regardless of the source or the intention behind those movements. The aspiration becomes a will to grow, a will to change, a will to progress, and this involves several steps to ensure that the being is coalescing around the aspiration and not random vital impulses or ideas.

The Psychic Being — Soul: Its Nature, Mission and Evolution Introduction

There is considerable confusion about the nature of the soul. A sizable portion of humanity denies the existence of the soul, while another segment of humanity reduces its ‘value’ below that of material possessions and outward satisfactions. The ego-personality, bound up in the actions and reactions of the mind, life and body, has little time to consider the implications of the soul, its existence, its purpose, its action and its significance for our growth and development.

The Role of the Mental Will in the Spiritual Development of the Integral Yoga

The will power is a real and important part of the effort by the individual. Will power can be developed through exercise, just as we develop the physical muscles through exercise and weight training. In our development of the mental will, we frequently become frustrated when something we try to accomplish does not work out quickly or easily. How many people have tried to control their diet, or change some habit of reaction through exercise of the will, and lamented their failure! But this is simply an incorrect understanding of the process.

The Benefits of a Prepared Mental Instrument for Action in the World

Many spiritual seekers in today’s world dismiss the need to develop the mind and its inherent powers. The mind is seen as the obstacle to the attainment of the greater knowledge that accompanies spiritual development. This understanding is rooted in the larger belief that spiritual growth implies a separation and abandonment of the life in the world, a belief that took hold with the ascendancy of Mayavada and similar schools of thought around the world that placed primacy on spiritual realisation at the expense of the development of the inherent powers of the mind to develop and refine the lif

Receiving and Utilizing the Universal Vital Forces

In our fragmented process of understanding, we frequently create an artificial separation that does not exist in reality. Thus, seekers sometimes undertake to find ways to draw on the universal vital energy, when in fact, it is through the flow of that energy that they live, breathe, exist, grow and undertake actions. A more precise formulation of their interest is how to tap into the universal vital force consciously, at will, and with enhanced power flow.

Understanding the Stages of Coping and Mastery in Response to Exte al Events

At some point in life, the individual becomes aware that the former methods of reacting to circumstances and events are not only counter-productive, but actually harmful to their own health and well-being and the successful resolution of the situation. Struggling and striving, fighting and reacting, instinctive behaviour and apathy and inertia, all past responses, wind up leaving the situation unresolved, the individual exhausted or worn out or in a state of despair or depression.

Adaptation of the Body to Support the Manifestation of a New Power of Consciousness

In his Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda details a number of events he witnessed or experienced personally whereby a spiritual master was able to materialize his form and communicate with the disciple from a great distance; and where various yogis were able to perform acts of materialization of various material objects. His experiences are not isolated, but are similar to those reported by others on a number of occasions.

The Action of the Higher Force As It Descends Into the Present Formulation of the Mind, Life and Body

When the higher spiritual forces begun to enter the being through any kind of opening, they interact with the existing framework of the body-life-mind. Any time energy is introduced into a system, it activates the existing patterns of response, so that the mind begins to create its thoughts and ideas, the vital being responds with its emotions, and vital reactions and the physical body responds with its normal actions. Any embedded habitual patterns or locked in reactions from past samskaras will naturally arise.

What Is Cosmic Consciousness?

Our normal human consciousness revolves around the standpoint and awareness of our ego-personality. We look at things from our own viewpoint, and determine our relation to everything that takes place based on how we perceive these things to impact the ego. We tend to treat the universal creation in reference to ourselves, such as believing and acting on the belief that the sun revolves around the earth. This earth-centric viewpoint is an extension of our individual ego-centric viewpoint.

The Different Processes for Change of the Vital Nature and the Psychic Being

The vital nature, under the influence of the Guna of Rajas, tends to create drama. Struggle, disruption, aggressive responses are all a part of this vital play. One of the manifestations of this drama is to raise the temperature about any resistance, obstacle, delay etc. that the individual experiences. Another is to seek out a culprit and label it as a ‘hostile force’ thereby accentuating the challenge being faced and increasing the dramatic effect.

The Role of Spiritual Experiences in the Change of Human Nature

The vital ego is attracted to the excitement of having experiences that are unusual or powerful. It therefore wants to find ways to repeat or expand upon them once they have had such an experience. In reality, however, there is very little of long-term value in this approach. The experiences come, and they go, and the individual remains essentially unchanged, other than perhaps being distracted enough to want to chase after experiences.

The Importance of the Psychic Transformation

As the seeker traverses the unknown realms of the inner being, the various worlds of the physical, vital and mental planes and the spiritual heights and widenesses, he is confronted with many circumstances, events, beings, and actions which he simply does not have any reference point to understand. This can lead to errors, even fatal mistakes. The guidance of an experienced teacher, or guru, can help, yet the ultimate and essential aid is the psychic being coming out in front and taking charge of the direction and focus of the being.

How to Overcome Fear

A number of years ago, a crowd of anti-war protesters in Washington DC were gathered in front of a federal building and were suddenly confronted with a phalanx of heavily armed police wielding guns, batons and potentially tear gas cannisters, arriving with numerous paddy wagons, who surrounded them and began to move in. A vibration of fear went through the people assembled there, as they thought they could be beaten, arrested, or both. Then someone began to chant “OM” and the crowd picked it up.

Consciousness, Its Powers and the Drive to Discover Our True Self

When we try to define consciousness we tend to do it from an individual standpoint, our own state of awareness. From a broader perspective however, we can see that consciousness exceeds both in scope and power, that of the individual status. Western science is moving toward a view that will eventually agree with the insights of the ancient Rishis and sages, as it has definitively determined that Matter is a form of energy, and in fact, maintains immense energy potential locked up in the concentrated form that we call Matter.

Becoming Aware of Consciousness Independent of the Body, Life and Mind

What is consciousness? How can we understand consciousness separate from what we believe to be ourselves, the body, vital force and mental framework that we identify with? Philosophers, scientists and religious leaders have all tried to develop a definition of “consciousness”. Rene Descartes famously declared ‘I think, therefore I am.’ Subsequent researchers in the field of consciousness have challenged this statement, and spiritual practitioners experience pure awareness without the movement of thought in the mental field.

The Transformation of the Sex Centre and Its Energy

For the practitioner of the integral Yoga, energy is utilized to redirect and shift the standpoint away from the ego-personality into the divine standpoint, and then to effectuate actions to carry out the divine manifestation in the world. Energy dedicated to the enhancement or satisfactions of the ego-personality is therefore ‘wasted’ for this purpose, although it may be, for those not actively engaged in the yoga, a positive effort and activity that they carry out.

Where Do Desires Come From?

We feel a desire and try to fulfil it. It may be a desire or craving for some type of food or drink, or for a particular object of material enjoyment, or it may be a sexual desire, or a desire for companionship, excitement, or any other vital drive that wells up in us. In some cases we try to satisfy that desire. In other cases, we determine we would like to rid ourselves of that desire, not fulfill it, and be at peace without whatever it is that we crave.

The Flame of Aspiration, the Mystic Fire

The Rig Veda has a large number of hymns to Agni, the mystic fire. Sri Aurobindo translated and commented on the hymns to Agni in his book, Hymns to the Mystic Fire. The importance of the mystic fire, which we may call the flame of aspiration for the spiritual seeker is evidenced by both the number of hymns appearing in the Rig Veda, as well as the fact that the very first hymn is dedicated to Agni. This first hymn sets the tone of the spiritual seer’s devotion to the development of this flame of aspiration as the basis for spiritual sadhana.

What Does It Mean to ‘Be Calm’ in the Mind

Attaining a deep inner peace in the being is a process that can begin wherever an individual current is in their inner life. For someone just starting out, there is no expectation of some sudden miraculous silencing of the mind (although of course, it is possible). Rather, the initial attempts can be modest, providing a basis and foundation for further steps to follow. Quieting the chu ing of the mind is an early stage that the seeker can utilize to gain control over other aspects of the being.

The Supreme Consciousness and the Creative Force of Manifestation

Indian spirituality and philosophy has recognized two primary aspects to existence, the Supreme Consciousness that creates, informs, constitutes and contains all that exists, and the Creative Force that actually manifests the universal creation. The Gita describes the Supreme Consciousness as the Purushottama, the ultimate Purusha, and the Creative Force as the Para Prakriti, the Divine Shakti, the supreme executive Nature.

What Does Sri Aurobindo Mean by Transformation of the Nature?

In setting forth a goal of transformation of the nature through the advent of the spiritual consciousness and the supramental level, Sri Aurobindo goes beyond the goals of other traditional spiritual paths which have ‘liberation’ as the goal. He describes the impact of each new manifestation of consciousness as representing a radical change that affects the preceding levels. This occurred with the advent of the vital life-force in a world of physical matter, and can be seen also in the advent of mind in a world of life and matter.

The Fundamental Nature of Existence is Consciousness

As we reflect on our own existence, and our relationship to the world around us, we begin by referencing everything to our own desires, needs, wants and feelings. We look at the world as exte al to us, inanimate matter somehow sustaining plant and animal life. The sun appears to revolve around the earth giving us periods of light and periods of darkness, periods of warmth and periods of cold. The elements go through changes and we experience rain, snow and ice, dryness, heat, and cold, depending on our location and the season.

Supermind

Within the framework of our mind and the experience of our vital existence, we are inculcated in the belief that everything is subject to duality, good and bad, happy and unhappy, light and dark. We cannot generally conceive of an existence that is not subject to these pairs of opposites. We believe that we cannot appreciate happiness without the experience of sadness, or that we cannot truly gain any measure of knowledge without a corresponding experience of ignorance, or that light cannot be valued unless we have gone through darkness.

Perceiving the Universal Forces at Work Through Attenuation of the Hold of the Ego-Centric Viewpoint

With our normal human viewpoint based in the standpoint of the ego we react as if the entire world revolves around us. This ego-centric, anthropocentric viewpoint creates its own formidable limitations in terms of recognising, perceiving, knowing and addressing the larger forces at work. If we step out of the ego-standpoint for a moment we can see that there is an entire universal creation with galaxies, suns and planets, moving and producing energetic radiation, and we have no real idea why this all exists or what it is all about.

Reliance on the Divine Power Rather Than on the Individual Mind and Will

A strong mental consciousness and will may aid the individual in determining a way forward, but they are not the powers that can eventually succeed in the yogic process. If we view the yoga of Nature, we find that as a new power emerges, it brings with it unique, new ways of dealing with the need of the time and the evolutionary process as it takes shape at that moment.

Suggestions Coming from the Vital World Also Impact Our Responses

The vital worlds are generally unseen and unrecognised by us, as they do not take physical forms in the same way as our exte al world within which we live and act. This does not imply, however, that they do not have interaction with our world and the beings, including ourselves, that inhabit this physical world. Almost everyone has the experience of some event that occurs in a dream-state or in other circumstances where our mind and senses are shifted away from the focus and attention demanded by the outer world. The phenomenon of astral projection is one such circumstance.

Why a Spiritual Seeker Should Not Just ‘Go With the Flow’

We frequently hear the advice that we could have much more peace and satisfaction in our lives if we were not always trying to ‘manage’ things. We are encouraged to just ‘go with the flow’. Even spiritual seekers are frequently asked to let the ‘force’ work without interference from our mind or vital being. At the same time, we are asked to exercise insight and discrimination to monitor the forces that are at work trying to move us, and to not accept whatever happens to come along. Not every force aids the sadhana. … some of them actually inhibit or distract from the spiritual pursuit.

Identifying and Addressing Obstacles Through Inner Development for Spiritual Progress

It is a somewhat natural tendency in human nature to blame others, or circumstances, or fate, when obstacles arise. We tend to bemoan how ‘unfair’ life can be. We see conspiracies and power structures that are preventing us from accomplishing what it is that we believe we are meant to accomplish. Few people look at what happens in their lives, and in their inner struggles, as a window to their own condition. The idea that the obstacle is within us, not something exte al, does not easily find favor in anyone’s mind.

We tend to accept the limitations of the sense organs and the mind as if they are axioms, unable to be altered. We accept that blind people cannot see and that deaf people cannot hear. We believe we cannot interact using the mind alone to communicate or to experience things at a distance. We tend to believe that the limits of our sense organs are fixed and anything outside their normal range is simply imperceptible to us.

When it becomes frustrated or suffers a setback, it tends to recoil into tamas, with its depression and feelings of failure or weakness.

The Complex Make-Up of the Human Personalities

We tend to look on ourselves as being of a specific nature and having a specific personality. We see main lines of understanding, of reaction, and of action and look upon these as ‘who we are’. If we take a closer look, however, we soon begin to see that we are not as simple and homogeneous as it first seemed. A multitude of different forces, energies, levels of consciousness all find their place in the human individual and make us much more complex and difficult to categorize than we believe.

Many people mistakenly believe that those who take up the spiritual life and withdraw from active involvement in the outer life of society, marriage, familiy, commerce, governance, etc. are somehow weak or unfit to succeed in society and they are “taking the easy way out”. It is true that some who experience a life of difficulty and failure turn to the spiritual life as a refuge of sorts. The misconception lies in the idea that one can succeed in the spiritual life with weakness of body, life-energy or mind.

Understanding Fluctuations in the Force of the Spiritual Sadhana

The spiritual seeker tends to struggle with the constant recurrence of old thoughts, feelings, reactions and desires. He is also constantly confronted by changes in his energy levels and focus. Much of this is due to the underlying and deeply embedded energies that he has inherited as part of human nature as it has been developed and manifested. Some of this is due to education, expectations and societal pressures that have helped shape his being in this lifetime. Another portion are due to the constant changing of the three Gunas as they adjust their predominance from one moment to the next.

The story of the unbaked jar, which cannot sustain the pressure of being filled is illustrative for the similar experience of the energy descending into a being not yet ready to hold that force.

A Change of the Outer Nature Requires First a Change in the Inner Being

The physical body (actually the entire material world) is subject to habits, and change tends to come slowly. Our being, however, is made up of a series of sheaths which progress from the subtle to the gross physical and thus, any attempt to make a change to the more outward sheaths, the physical, the vital and the mental included, must begin at the more subtle levels of the inner being. The more subtle an energetic field is, the more pliable it can be, and the more powerfully it acts upon the next more outward sheath.

For most people, rest is a state of lowered consciousness in which we recuperate from the fatigue generated through our various activities. If we reflect on how we respond to fatigue, we find that we have different modes depending on whether it is mental fatigue, vital exhaustion or physical tiredness. The usual responses for mental fatigue include distraction of the mind through various light activities, such as game-playing, watching television, or reading light literature, such as mysteries, romance novels, or other ‘page-tu er’ fare, etc.

The Transitional Stage of Shifting from the Outer Surface Consciousness to the Inner Consciousness

At a certain stage of spiritual development, seekers tend to go through a phase where the world, its actions, objects, goals and results seem to be an illusion. The philosophical path of Mayavada resulted from just such an insight and experience. The seeker sees that everything is transitory and ephemeral in nature, that the objects of our desires and the fruits of our actions all crumble into dust and are not permanent. Everything changes and dies. There is nothing one can hold onto in the world that is not subject to death and dissolution.

Dealing With Physical Pain

In various places, Sri Aurobindo describes the possibility of pain becoming for the spiritual practitioner an intense form of spiritual bliss, Ananda. He is describing the psychological experience of a realized soul who has separated himself from attachment to and identification with the physical body. This is intended to show that vibrations experienced can have a different result when the individual shifts the standpoint of the consciousness. It is not meant as a prescription to ‘enjoy pain’.

This focus is punctuated by major life changes, birth, school, puberty, adult life and its various forms of responsibilities, and then disease, old age and eventually death, for ourselves and our loved ones.

Each individual has his own unique types and levels of receptivity, and these too can vary over time. The universal forces are constantly there, but if an individual is closed off, unresponsive, then he does not gain the full benefit of that force. The ancient description of the energy centres in the subtle body, the chakras, holds that we receive energies through an ascending series of centres, and each one has its own characteristic action and expression.

Refined and sensitive individuals tend to judge others by their own internal standard. In many cases, this means expecting others to always respond with good will, compassion and honesty. In some cases, they actually deny reality to negative or hostile acts by a conscious decision to not engage and recompense negativity with their own positive view.

Until the psychic being is sufficient well-developed, it is essentially ‘overpowered’ by the energy and focus of the exte al body, life and mind.
