The Predominant Characteristic of Physical Consciousness: Tamas or Inertia

An understanding of the three gunas, or qualities of Nature, is extremely helpful in gaining an understanding of the responses to exte al stimuli, events, people and circumstances. The gunas are sattwa, with a predominant quality of light and harmony, rajas with a predominant quality of movement and action of desire, and tamas, with a predominant quality of inertia or darkness. In general, one of these qualities tend to predominate, even though they remain at all times in flux and adjustment. Different aspects of the Nature tend to take on the cast of the predominant guna.

The Joy of Action — Independent of Conce for the Fruits of the Action

The goal of the integral yoga is nothing less than the transformation of human nature, the uplifting of consciousness to the next evolutionary stage in the manifestation and the consequent changes that brings about to create a new harmony and a new balance in the life of the individual and in the world. Those who take up this yoga find that human nature is not so malleable, and thus, old modes and habits of action tend to stay embedded even when we recognise that things need to change.

Patience, Perseverance and Firm Faith Are Needed Qualities on the Long Road of Yoga

The seeker gets glimpses of spiritual opening, experiences of a vastness and a deep silence when the mind falls utterly still. He may get a vision of forces and powers that act in the world and in himself. He may get the sense that he is crossing a threshold into a space where he no longer exists as a distinct individual, but as a part of something infinitely larger and more complex than his own individuality can encompass. He may experience a power that is entering his being and he may feel the electricity of that force coursing through his entire being.

Attaining Free Will By Overcoming the Sense of Individual Separation in the Manifestation and Our Bondage to the Cause and Effect Trajectory That Creates Our Present Opportunities and Choices

As the mental being develops and we begin to experience the sense of separation from the other beings who are part of the creation, we also begin to have a sense that we have “free will” and make our own independent choices. To a great degree, this sense is misplaced, insofar as our current decisions and choices are very much controlled by both past actions and their trajectory, as well as pressures and manipulation by forces active upon us, both in the past and the present.

Training the Subconscient to Respond to the Higher Spiritual Will

As the seeker begins to observe the movements of the exte al nature closely, he can identify certain repetitive patterns of response, including impulses to stimuli of various sorts, cravings, desires, fears, frustrations, anger, and attraction. All of these are for the most part virtually automatic without conscious decision or control by the higher elements of the being. While we tend to think of ourselves as being in control of our life-responses, the reality tends to be far different than our superficial assessment. We call these movements instincts, habits or trained behaviour.

Understanding Desire and the Absence of Desire

When seekers take up the spiritual path, they try to follow the guideline to reject desire. They will frequently say “I don’t desire anything”. In many cases, however, this is an obfuscation by the vital nature manipulating the mind to accept something which is not entirely accurate. Let’s break this down:

The Divine Intention and Will Goes Beyond the Human Ability to Conceive and Grasp It

We try to judge situations and events from our human understanding. We do not generally see the chain of cause and effect that led to a specific circumstance, nor the impact of the result that we observe on future events. We see things from our own narrow egoistic viewpoint and judge them based on our own desires, wishes or trained ways of analyzing them.

Gaining the Standpoint of the Observer of the Nature

An important step in the practice of yoga is to attain true detachment from the surface nature through the shifting of the standpoint from the surface to the ‘witness consciousness’, the Purusha. The separation of Purusha from Prakriti, the active nature, is needed in order to effectuate change in the exte al nature, as otherwise, we remain involved in that nature and are limited within the frame that it sets for us.

Overcoming the Darkness and Depression When the Psychic Being Recedes

The distinction between the state of consciousness with the psychic being active and leading, versus that where it has receded and the ego-personality of the surface being is predominant, provides a very clear method for the seeker to know what is taking place internally. By adopting the standpoint of the witness of the nature, the individual can make this determination.

The Development, Powers and Limits of the Mental Consciousness

The human being consists of multiple levels of consciousness which interact with and impact one another and which, from an evolutionary standpoint, represent a consistent trend of increasing power and subtlety of the consciousness. The consciousness of the body, the physical consciousness is the first foundation. The vital consciousness develops to provide new powers of understanding and action layered on top of the physical consciousness. When the mental consciousness develops, it adds yet additional powers of consciousness, again layered on top of the physical and vital levels.

Helpful Tips About the Practice of Meditation

The 3 gunas of Nature, Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas are active in all things, even in the approach we take to the practice of meditation. Understanding these modes and the specific types of energy they each represent can aid us in tuning the meditation practice for ultimate positive results. Tamas acts through darkness, sloth, torpor and indolence. When Tamas is in the ascendent, there is an inclination to avoid meditation through tiredness or inertia or a sense of it being useless.

When we consider the objective of the transformation of human nature, we begin to understand that it is not a simple or quick process. True Freedom and Free Will Resides in the Divine, Not in the Individual Ego-Personality

The individual drops of water that make up the ocean do not determine the movement or action of the ocean. They are carried along and partake of the larger forces that act upon and through the ocean. The are a small pinpoint ‘nexus’ of the ocean action but not the motive or driving force. Similarly, human individuals are not the motive or driving force of action, but are more the ‘nexus’ of action of larger universal forces that manifest themselves through all of the individual body-life-mind complex individuals that together make up our human race.

The Transcendent Divine, the Cosmic or Universal Plane of Consciousness and Material Existence

The seer of the Taittiriya Upanishad identified various planes of ever more subtle and powerful consciousness, with the most subtle and powerful being the ultimate causative agent of the denser and lower formations of Matter, Life and Mind. If we look at the experience of the vedic seers, we find that there are three basic terms that define stages of conscious awareness. There is the lower, denser level consisting of Matter-Life-Mind. There is another level that is the “Knowledge” plane of consciousness.

The heart of devotion opens spontaneously with a deep sense of reverence, aspiration and love. It is based on soul-contact with the Divine. Awakening and Transformation of the Subconscious Must Precede Change at the Inconscient Levels of Existence

The inconscient level is a substratum for the broader manifestation and is not tied to any particular individual. Before anything can be done to effectively wake up and energize the inconscient, the task of the spiritual seeker is to bring down the light and consciousness through all the higher planes of the being, and then work on becoming conscious of and transforming the subconscious level, which includes both general and individualised aspects. An individual’s own experiences sink down into the subconscient and remain embedded there, waiting to manifest when the conditions ripen.

Purification of the Being Is More Essential Than Extraordinary Spiritual Experiences

The vital nature revels in having extraordinary experiences that arise as a result of spiritual practice or some type of opening to other planes of being. These experiences support the ego, making the individual feel special, uniquely qualified and selected for spiritual progress, and they are frequently ‘shown off’ to others as a type of spiritual “one-upmanship” and as a sign of authority to exercise influence or power over others.

Concentration of the Consciousness

People frequently confuse consciousness with mental awareness and concentration with some kind of mental effort or focus; yet, consciousness is not limited to mental awareness and concentration is not restricted to mental activity. We are all familiar with mental concentration. We focus on some specific subject and direct our attention, exclusively if possible, to that subject for a specified period of time. Taking a mathematics exam or concentrating on learning a song, or any other activity that requires highly focused attention is our usual way of understanding concentration, and this is in

Divine Grace and Cosmic Law

The terms ‘divine grace’, along with ‘cosmic law’ and ‘divine compassion’, are transcriptions into human terms from our human viewpoint of actions and events that take place from an entirely different level of the divine manifestation and with a viewpoint that far exceeds that of our limited human understanding. For example, we tend to look at the world as some kind of machinery that operates under specific strict rules that we treat as inflexible rules, governed by an all-powerful, all-knowing ruler..

People who take up spiritual life frequently believe that they should change their line of work and focus in the exte al world. In some cases, this is a recognition of the inner being’s guidance as the individual awakens to his true calling. In other cases, however, this is a mistaken belief that certain lines of work or action are ‘more spiritual’ and thus, one should abandon what was a natural calling for one that the mind has determined is the ‘more spiritual’ activity.

Yogic View of Beauty

We are trained to appreciate exte al beauty of form, whether in life or in art. This training internalizes cultural preferences. Thus, the ideal of beauty changes depending on which culture is providing the cultural background and which time-frame encompasses the judgment term. Based on whatever our frame is for the judgment, we determine if something is beautiful or not. This is all, however, based on the ego-standpoint and does not take into account the divine standpoint. Where we do not observe beauty, the divine standpoint may see the perfection of beauty.

Exte al Interactions Provide the Seeker a Mirror to His Inner Characteristics and Traits

What we see in others in many cases is a mirror to what we contain within ourselves. We understand what is taking place because we are able to receive the vibration and internalize it and translate it into something that resonates in our being. In Western psychology there is a concept called ‘projection’ whereby someone ‘projects’ onto another person those traits, qualities, motives or actions which one has within oneself, whether openly visible or latent.

he Three Gunas, Their Role in the Difficulties and Obstacles in the Yogic Development, and the Certainty of Success When the Divine Call is Present

The importance of the rule of the 3 Gunas, the qualities of Nature, cannot be over-emphasized. Each of these qualities has both its positive aspects and its downsides, and they are functional in all life. They are continually in fluctuation and intermix with one another to create the events and circumstances that play out in our lives. This remains true even for those who take up the spiritual life. The focus, quality and process of the spiritual practice are all conditioned by the Gunas and their action.

In the end however, nothing less is envisioned than the entire transformation of our existence through the manifestation and integration of the next stage of the evolution of consciousness.

Observing the Dance of Vibrations

Our normal human view of things is limited by the restraining effect of our senses, as well as our ability to consciously receive and interpret what we perceive through the senses. We do not generally experience the living, breathing life of plants or trees, for instance. We do not ordinarily see the vibration of the aura as it surrounds our bodies. Occasionally, we can see the vibrations of heat as it rises off a hot surface.

The Nature of the Resistance of Universal Nature to the Pressure of the Divine Force

We tend to accept issues we are having in our lives as something personal to ourselves and thus, we struggle and either consider ourselves to be weak, or sinful, or otherwise unfit. This happens both generally and for those who practice yoga, and the result is, in many cases, some form of depression or disturbance or suffering associated with the struggles and the failure. We usually fail to take into account that there is one pervasive and permeating consciousness in the entire creation and that there are forces larger than our individual egoistic selves at work, in us and through us.

Conscious Development of the Psychic Being and its Instruments from Life to Life

For most individuals, the process of birth, death and rebirth is essentially automatic and out of their conscious control. With the death of the body, the vital being and then the mental being eventually lose their integrity and dissolve as well. The psychic being, with its increasing store of experience, not attached to any particular ego-personality then takes a new birth. The Tibetan Book of the Dead provides a step by step overview of the process and explains how most souls get attracted to their next birth.

Receptivity to the Universal Vital Forces

In May 1973, a devotee from the West was visiting Auroville in South India. At that time, it was primarily an eroded, dusty plateau, not the lush forested scene that one can see today if one visits. May is an extremely hot month, and the visitor had just arrived a couple of weeks earlier from the United States. As he was walking around in the mid-day sun, he was struck by the intensity of the sun’s heat and force and at one point, he curled up on a hillside, overwhelmed with heat stroke and a pounding headache that accompanied it.

The Process of Effectuating Real Change in Human Nature

Honest observation without mental bias is the first step the Mother outlines. This is accomplished by setting up the ideal as a screen or filter against which to compare each action. Those that do not compare entirely favorably represent things that can be identified as subjects for the change process. The standpoint of the uninvolved witness of the nature does not have any obligation to intervene, and many paths of yogic development that utilize this method counsel non-intervention as a basis of achieving liberation.

Faith In and Receptivity to the Guru

In Essays on the Gita, Sri Aurobindo notes that every scripture has both a ‘temporal’ and an ‘ete al’ aspect. The temporal aspect is transitory, changes from time to time and from culture to culture, based on the societal background within which the scripture has been produced. The knowledge gained from this aspect is subject to modification. The ete al aspect represents knowledge that transcends the specific time and place within which it was produced, and remains valid regardless of cultural background or societal norms.

The Impact of the Mind and the Vital Nature on the Body Consciousness

We many times fail to recognise the extent of the impact that the mind, and the vital nature, have on the body, its health and its capacities for growth, resilience and development. The mind-body connection is starting to come into focus, however. When the mind sends repeated ‘suggestions’ to the body it impacts the response of the body. It can send positive affirmative messages and the body will respond with a renewed vigor, energy and resilience. Or it can send negative messages, which then increase the body’s sense of helplessness, victimization and failure.

A Technique for Shifting the Focus of Consciousness Into a Status of Complete Identification

Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras describes the practice of samyama which is a power of identification that results from the systematic development of dharana (holding the mind on to some particular object), dhyana (an unbroken flow of knowledge in that object) and samadhi (reflecting on the meaning, not the form of the object). Wherever the power of samyama is directed, upon whichever object or focus, a state of identification with that object takes place and direct knowledge occurs for the practitioner. (n.b. description and meaning courtesy of Swami Vivekananda in his lectures on Raja Yoga).

Hundreds of millions of Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, and many tens of millions in other major religious denominations, are impressive numbers for our exte al mental awareness that measures and analyzes. Sri Aurobindo points out, however, that the mass quantity of nominal adherents means little, if anything, when it comes to the question of the evolutionary development of consciousness on the planet.

Changing or Eliminating a Habit of the Physical Consciousness

The physical consciousness is very much driven by habit, routine and fixed response patterns. We can observe this in our eating routines, our sleep routines, and other habitual actions. The mind and the vital can influence the physical consciousness through programming routines or habits into it, essentially training the physical to respond to specific stimuli and act in a certain manner when presented with the situation. All forms of physical exercise and repetitive activity are building new habits into the physical consciousness.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna teaches Arjuna that he has the right to action, but not to attachment to the fruits of the action, i.e. the results. In our world today we are fixated on the destination, not the ‘journey’ and we measure everything by the immediate results we obtain. This process is bound to develop frustration, dissatisfaction and impatience as the type of change we seek in yoga is not something that can be measured in tangible way from day to day.
