Three Main Causes of Madness, Psychological Collapse and Failure of the Spiritual Quest

Those who take up the spiritual quest face numerous difficulties along the way. Old habits and ways of seeing and acting are suddenly challenged, while at the same time energies long subdued or depressed may arise as the various chakras begin to open and pour out their energy. The various parts of the being can even be in conflict with one another as the mind holds an idea, the heart holds an aspiration, while the physical, nervous, and vital elements continue to try to express themselves in their usual manner.

To Read, or Not to Read, That is the Question for the Spiritual Seeker

Intellectual development is not the same as spiritual realisation. The essence of spiritual development lies in the living experience of the truths of the spirit, not in the mental understanding of concepts. Thus, preeminence is placed on experience, not reading. The sages of the Vedic and Upanishadic times provided spiritual guidance through creation of an environment, through example, and through guidance for the thoughts, emotions, vital energies and physical development of the body, with the focus on realisation of the spiritual truths in their lives.

The Value and Rationale for the Yoga of Works — Karma Yoga

The vital nature of man is a core existential element of our existence. In the past, those who took up serious spiritual practice frequently recognised both the power of the vital and the difficulty of bringing it under some kind of managed and focused control, and thus, they attempted to abandon it to whatever extent possible and focus on meditation to the exclusion of an outer life.

Miracles, Belief, Powers and the Evolution of Consciousness

For most people, there is a tremendous barrier of skepticism about things that they cannot see or experience for themselves, There is also a good deal of ignorance about how things actually work in the world, which can lead to misconceptions and a tendency toward gullibility when someone appears to speak with authority, particularly when it conce s things that otherwise are unable to be verified by the exte al senses. The role of ‘miracles’ is to bolster the credibility and acceptance of specific religious groups or leaders.

The Need to Organize and Arrange the Actions of the Exte al Being Around the Aspiration of the Psychic Being

To transform the life into one of spiritual focus and purpose, the various parts of the being need to be organized and ordered systematically to match the aspiration with the outward action. The thoughts, emotions, feelings, responses should be both coherent and arranged to present an harmonious relationship between the aspiration and the action. It does not help one if the aspiration is for one thing, but the mind, life or body chooses a different objective!

The Growth of the Soul

We become so used to all of the dark tendencies, hurtful energies and bad faith displayed throughout the world that we sometimes believe that this is the unchanging way that life is meant to be. What we often do not see is the secret evolutionary development of the soul, through time and circumstance, as it weaves its way through its various lifetimes of growth and development, and the interactions that occur with those who are at different stages in their own evolutionary progression, all of which, together, creates the mixed energetic reality that we see around us.

Where Does Desire Come From?

Everyone experiences the tug of desire. We observe something and suddenly we want to have it. We experience something pleasant and we want to have it happen once again. Sometimes we feel a sudden urge for something after being exposed to a commercial message. At other times we can simply be in a room where people are engaged in exercising the impulse of desire of various sorts and we find that the vibration of desire wells up within us. This is considered to be a normal part of life, so most people do not even pay attention to the process or the result.

The Breakthrough to the Reversal of Consciousness

Sri Ramana Maharshi, to point the seeker towards the truth of his existence, asked ‘who am I?’ With persistent inquiry, the individual soon finds that this exte al personality, ego-self that we normally treat as who we are, is in reality a front, a shell, an illusion, and that the truth of our existence lies deep within, held as knowledge within the soul, and only released into the forefront of our consciousness when the being is ready. The readiness may be prepared over many lifetimes, and at the right moment, the realisation occurs as if by a miracle.

Art and Intellectual Development Are Not Essentially Spiritual Pursuits

We tend to confuse artistic and various intellectual pursuits as somehow being spiritual accomplishments. These are, however, developments of the higher emotional and mental spheres to a great degree, except when they are channeling energies of the lower vital levels of our being, which, in today’s world, represents a major source of such artistic creations. Putting aside the lower vital influences and focusing on the higher productions of our finer emotions and mental development as it is expressed in art, there is a tendency to confuse refined mental development with spirituality.

The Limitations of the Thinking Mind

The development of the mental consciousness has brought about enormous changes for life on earth, and as the foremost species utilizing the mental consciousness, humanity has taken the mind to limits never before considered as possible. Advances in logic, science, philosophy, psychology, mathematics, astronomy, quantum physics and many other fields, as well as technological applications of theoretical concepts, show off the powers that the mental development can manifest in life.

The Complex Nature of Our Being Impacts Our Ability to Change and Transform Our Lives

Those who identify with their mental being tend to believe that if they think in a certain way, that they have succeeded in embodying that. They will take the thought for the accomplishment without necessarily recognising that their physical actions, their vital energies and even aspects of their thought mind continue with things their minds have rejected.

Hidden Powers in Life and Yoga

There is an interesting contradiction in the way humanity deals with unseen, or invisible forces at work. We believe wholeheartedly nowadays in gravity, electricity, wireless communications, magnetic transportation vehicles, and, despite the fact that all of these represent invisible forces, we recognise that they both exist and have their effect and can be manipulated according to our need or intention.

Is It the Soul or the Vital Being We Perceive?

Most people are rooted in the vital consciousness, and thus respond to the vibrations that occur within the vital realm. Unless they have contact with their soul or at least clear influence by the psychic being on the exte al parts of the being, they are virtually unable to recognise the action of the soul in others. They therefore do not clearly appreciate the nature of the soul, or its action. Many actually deny the existence of the soul. Even those who admit the existence of the soul, however, frequently confuse vital movements for the action of the soul. Those who have a clear experience

Medicine, Faith and the Healing Process

There are a number of examples that lead to the conclusion that it is not medicine alone that cures the patient. A young man reported his own experience. He was visiting India in the early 1970’s and was afflicted by a severe case of amoebic dysentery while there, to the point that he was in extreme pain, bleeding and undergoing constant bowel disruption. He asked some people where he was staying how he should deal with the situation and they recommended a homeopathic doctor nearby.

Fear: Its Effect on the Vital Sheath and As a Cause of Illness

Several years ago there was a world-wide pandemic that affected many tens of millions of people, which was called the covid-19 pandemic. It provided us a clear opportunity to see the impact of fear on the reactions of people. Panic ensued. Stores closed, public access was shut down in many places, people tried to avoid the pandemic by staying at home and minimizing their interaction with other people, keeping their distance, using face masks, protective gear such as plastic shields and using a lot of hand sanitizer products.

First Foundations for the Practitioner of the Integral Yoga

Patanjali’s Raja Yoga outlines a series of steps or stages in the development of that particular path. The first two are Yama and Niyama, which outline certain purification actions to prepare the practitioner for the later activities and experiences in the yogic practice. These two ‘limbs’, together, represent a solidifying of peace, the removal of obstacles that can disturb the mind, the emotions, the nervous sheath and the body.

The Action of Karma and the Nature of Suffering

“What goes around comes around” and “karma” both basically indicate that there is a factor in existence that rewards good deeds and punishes bad deeds. But do we really see that things work this way? Is there some divine entity sitting up in the clouds, watching our good and bad actions, and giving us presents when we are ‘good’ and punishments when we are ‘bad’? How do we define good and bad, after all? Is it a moral judgment that varies based on the religion we follow or the culture to which we belong?

Following the Right Path to Divine Realisation

We very easily fall into the mistaken idea that the path we follow is the best way to approach the Divine or achieve spiritual realisation and that other paths are either less effective or do not provide the complete liberation from the ego-personality. We also tend to accept the idea that whichever form our lead capabilities take represents the best way to approach the Divine.

Healing Sickness With Spiritual Force

An individual reported an experience which, at the time, was unique to him. He was suddenly attacked by a virulent disease and collapsed on the floor. He was carried off to another room in the facility where various individuals tried to figure out what happened to him and what to do about it. After he revived, he reported that he had been outside his body, up at ceiling level, looking down on it lying on the floor with the individuals around him trying to revive him.

The Soul’s Faith Is a Precursor to Attainment of the Truth of Existence

Faith is generally put in opposition to Knowledge, underlying the long-term dispute in the West between ‘religion’ and ‘science’. This debate has religion requiring belief in the tenets of the religion based on pure faith, and denying the validity of a science-based knowledge approach that may contradict those intensely-held beliefs based on faith. In this view of things, faith and science are irreconcilably opposed to one another.

The Soul and the Psychic Being

The soul is a portion of the Divine specifically detailed to each individual being that is created as part of the universal manifestation. The soul develops the inmost being, the psychic being, through lifetimes of experience. This psychic being grows, matures and transitions through birth and death as the aspect of the soul that accumulates the essence of experience as a basis for continued evolution of consciousness over time.

Concentration Is Not the Same As Meditation

There is considerable confusion about meditation and concentration. They are, however, not quite the same. Achieving a meditative state inwardly can aid in the development of concentration. Certain forms of meditation utilize techniques that lead to concentration. Yet meditation can be calm, relaxed and peaceful without being a concentrated state of awareness that focuses on a single point, which is the definition of concentration. It can be ‘blank’ of ‘content’. Certain forms of meditation let the mind rest quietly in a state of vast general awareness, which is not ‘concentration’.

A Transitional Phase of Work in the Integral Yoga

For the practitioner of the integral yoga, any form of work represents an opportunity to discard the normal, habitual mode of action and replace it with the direct action of the Divine Force. This transition, however, is neither immediate nor completed all at once, so there is inevitably a phase where the mind, vital being and physical body continue to respond and act as they have been doing, and where incremental changes in the way they respond can aid in the change that is required.

The Unseen Societal Conditions That Frame Our Response to Events in Our Lives

Each society, each religion, each culture in the world has its own characteristic ideas and responses to the questions that arise during an individual’s life. Many of these are programmed into the individual in childhood, starting with prenatal conditioning based on the energies of the mother. Once the child is born, he is trained to accept the societal norms and modes of reaction to various circumstances, until these become an unspoken assumption that forms the basis of the individual’s life responses and judgments.

How Do We Determine Our Destined Role in the World? — Part 4

It is only in still waters that we can see our reflection. Swami Vivekananda in his lectures on Raja Yoga, describes the mind-stuff (chitta), and how impressions, desires, observations and thoughts all disturb the stillness of the mind-stuff. He also describes methods of bringing it to a status of stillness, in which the individual can step away from the call of the vital desire nature or the mental processes, and thus, be receptive to higher forces and levels of interfacing with the universal reality.

The Nature of Faith

What is faith? Faith has generally been associated with belief in a religion and its specific tenets, or ‘articles of faith’. We are educated within our religion of choice about the basic beliefs that underlie that religion and we are asked to accept them ‘on faith’. In some cases, these ‘articles of faith’ are due to negotiated agreements among church elders at some time in the distant past, and in some cases, these beliefs are fully contradicted by knowledge that has subsequently come to light as humanity grows and advances in its understanding.

The Soul Provides the Continuity of Consciousness from Life to Life

Within a particular lifetime we experience a sense of continuity of being, which we normally attribute to the ego-personality. The sense of ego helps us identify with the body, life and mind we currently inhabit and utilize. This ego-sense is held together by the force of memory and by an identification with the body, despite any changes through which it has gone. We do not remember all of the feelings, thoughts, events, activities and experiences that have occurred throughout or lives. Who actually can remember, for instance, the experience of being a baby, a toddler, a youth, etc.

Quiet and stillness, the ability to remain calm without agitation or upset, the ability to achieve true peace in the mind, in the vital and nervous being and in the physical body, are generally not recognised as a true sign of strength. If we try to sit quietly for meditation, we find all kinds of thoughts chu ing through our minds.

After intensive mental awakening, vital experiences of spiritual significance, and the emotional uplift and fervour of devotion, there comes a period when the work shifts to the physical mind and framework, and change, that seemed to be so close and real, now seems to be illusory and just about impossible. A sense of emptiness, of uselessness, of wasted time and effort overwhelms the mind and the being is caught up in what seems to be an utterly ordinary life devoid of any deeper meaning or significance.

A devotee reported several incidents that appeared to be the result of spiritual force. The first occurred in early 1973 in Los Angeles. He attended a talk by Udar Pinto of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and afterwards joined his party for dinner, at which there was extensive discussion. Udar told the devotee ‘you should come to the Ashram”. The devotee replied that he had no money and had no idea how he would be able to pay for the plane flight or a stay in Pondicherry, India.

The Essential Role of the Psychic Being in the Process of Vital Transformation

Transformation of the vital nature in man is a key and essential part of the transformation that must come with the evolution of the next stage of consciousness. Past yogic paths did not focus to any great degree, if at all, on transformation of the exte al being and life in the world; rather, it was highly intent on achieving spiritual realisation or liberation, with little emphasis given to the body-life-mind individuality or the mode of living in the world.

Distinguishing the Supracosmic Reality from the Supramental Consciousness

The long history of focus by spiritual aspirants on achieving oneness with the Transcendent, the Ete al, while subordinating or outright denying the life of the world, has created substantial confusion about the significance of life, the nature of the manifested universal creation, and the relation of these to the Ete al. Sri Aurobindo clarifies the differences between the Ete al and the consciousness which is responsible for the creation, the supramental consciousness.

The Power of Wideness in the Practice of the Integral Yoga

When an individual being is under extreme pressure, whether through illness, emotional or mental distress, stress of living in the society or dealing with events and people, the natural reaction at the physical-vital-mental level is to contract, to curl up, to close off, to withdraw into a shell, to try to prevent the power that is active, whether it is due to physical forces, vital or emotional forces or mental forces, from breaking down or destroying the being. This strategy appears to be an important defense mechanism in the lower nature.

Boredom and Its Cure

We are frequently not aware of the state of boredom and its various manifestations within us. We do recognise periods when we feel at a loss and want to do or experience something or distract our minds and we recognise these times as boredom. What we do not necessarily recognise however are the times when we seem busy and active, but actually are trying to compensate for the feeling of boredom. Modern society has habituated us to be always in motion, to be “doing” something, experiencing something, or simply keeping our minds occupied.

The Development of the Spiritual Focus Over Time

We tend to measure success or failure in terms of specific results we see in our relatively short, individual lifetime, based on our preconceived or societally sanctioned ideas about what constitutes success or failure. When it comes to progress in spiritual development, however, this is not necessarily either the correct judgment term (time frame within which something can be evaluated), nor the correct criteria for deciding what constitutes success.

The shift from the standpoint of the desire-soul of the ego is not something that can occur completely and all at once. There are too many persistent threads of the instincts and habits of the mind-life-body complex to expect so radical a change to happen magically. There may be, and generally are, experiences which come to the seeker that confirm the fact of another status of consciousness wherein resides peace, light, harmony, knowledge and a force that is palpable, working on the mind, working on the vital, working on the body.

The Soul, its Evolutionary Development on Earth and the Universal Manifestation

In the ancient text of India, it is said that a human birth is essential for progress, and that even the Gods, if they desire to attain some new development, need to take birth in a human form. It is clear that generally the physical body, the vital nature and the mental development dissolve sequentially upon the death and dissolution of the body. It becomes obvious therefore that the development, the evolutionary progression that takes place, is not based in the body-life-mind complex or the ego-personality that attaches to them in any particular lifetime.

The Need and Method to Become Conscious and Change the Nature

We identify something about ourselves that we would like to change — it could be a physical transformation we seek, or a way to address an imbalance in our feelings or emotions, or it could be a change to our mind-set to overcome ideas of weakness, failure, incapacity, etc. We then try to find a way to create this change. We may try a new diet, we may take up a new exercise routine. We may change our wardrobe, or take up travel or a course of study and self-development. We may go to therapy to heal our relationships with others.
