Understanding the Existence of and Interaction With the Higher Ranges of Consciousness Above the Mind

Just as all energy operates along a spectrum of vibration from shorter wavelength to longer wavelength, and this spectrum can be perceived within certain limited ranges based on the capacity of our sense instruments (or tools we develop to extend our range of perception), so also consciousness operates also along a spectrum with different and increasing powers of consciousness active starting from the most dense, inert material consciousness, extending up through the vital levels and into the emotional and mental levels. Consciousness however does not stop at the mental level.

The Psychic Entity Knows the Purpose and Significance of Our Existence

When we live primarily, or entirely, focused on our exte al life via the instruments of the body, life-force and mind, we cannot determine nor recognise the purpose and significance of our existence. We may speculate. We may hold opinions. We may adhere to some doctrine, such as a religious doctrine, particularly if we are members of a particular faith and have been trained in that faith. None of these things, however, provide us any certainty as to this question.

A Shift of Consciousness Brings New Understanding of One’s Life and Existence in the World

We typically live rooted in the ego-consciousness in the exte al, physical world. We judge things based on our perceptions, our physical, vital and mental processes and our habitual way of understanding things from the standpoint of the ego. This leads to a very limited and biased viewpoint that does not provide a complete view of things. We see a small slice of existence and try to judge from that.

Integral Purification of All Parts of the Being Is a First Preparation for the Integral Yoga

In the context of the practice of yoga, purification is not the enforcement of some kind of moral code or precepts. This is a common perception based on religious tenets that have abounded through the ages that set forth a moral code and try to both control the actions of people and judge them based on their adherence to that moral code. Purification in a yogic context is the creation of a calm, clear light of awareness in the being.

The Parable of the Mote and the Beam and Its Relevance for the Spiritual Seeker

The spiritual seeker often finds that he can see weaknesses and faults in others. If he fails to recognise that his reaction may be due to harboring those faults and weaknesses within himself, he can take an attitude of hostility toward the other person who is exhibiting those things. He may try to control in someone else what he does not control within himself. He may give way to anger and a self-righteous attitude that can lead to much negativity.

Chance and Divine Order

We tend to interpret events from our own ego-standpoint as to whether they are “good” or “bad” without reflecting on or considering how they relate to a larger picture and longer perspective. This means we judge circumstances as if they occur by ‘chance’ and we evaluate these things with the concepts of “good luck” and “bad luck”. All of this, however, is both inaccurate and extremely misleading.

Regimented and Mechanised Social Life Does Not Solve the Evolutionary Crisis

Some societies have attempted to solve the the complex problems humanity is facing through massive attempts to educate and regiment the life of the individuals making up that society. These attempts rely on the idea that by controlling the education the society can create more or less “cogs in a machine”, and they try to develop patterns of living that essentially effaces individual uniqueness or creativity. Massive experiments have been tried.

The Initial Liberation of the Mental Being from Servitude to the Physical Body

We can learn much from the quite commonly related phenomenon called the ‘out of body’ experience. Many people have had such an experience where they resided in their awareness outside the body, in some cases from above the body and from that vantage point could observe the body as different and separated from the awareness with which they identified. Many of these cases occur during traumatic events such as an accident or an extreme onset of an illness.

The Spiritual Experience Gets Watered-Down or Lost As It is Transcribed into the Mental Framework

Human beings are essentially dependent on their mental perception in order to function in the world. This mental perception frames what we see, how we experience it, and our interpretation. We thus try to transcribe anything provided to us by our senses (or provided directly to the mind without reliance on the senses) into a mental framework. It is similar to the idea that we try to translate one language into another, where the one language has heavy inflection, inference and subtle meanings that are not truly captured in the language into which it has been translated.

Suppression Without True Rejection of the Sexual Impulse Does Not Solve the Issue for the Spiritual Seeker

The first impulse of religious or spiritual paths with respect to the sex impulse has frequently been to simply suppress and deny it. When any form of energy is forcefully suppressed, it acts like a coiled spring, storing that energy and building up its potential power, until such time as it is able to overcome the force of the suppression and then is released with a tremendous uprising of that energy. The result can be explosive, similar to the eruption of a volcano. Pressures build up until the cover can no longer contain it and it bursts forth.

Understanding the Quality of Sincerity in the Practice of the Integral Yoga

The general definition of sincerity as understood in society is the quality of unifying one’s intention with one’s words or actions. This definition is a good starting point for understanding sincerity in the yogic sense. The major difference between the two is the level of inward review and detail orientation that takes place in the process of the integral yoga.

Overcoming Vital Reactions of Attraction and Repulsion in Action

There are numerous activities we undertake in our lives that engage us with more, or less, interest. Some we treat as purely mechanical, some we detest but do them because we ‘have’ to. Some elicit very positive and focused interest from us and we tend to like those activities. Our vital nature creates, in its normal action, a response of liking or disliking and we then tend to be attracted to those things we like, and repulsed by those we do not.

Understanding the Difference Between Psychic and Spiritual

Every language has its limitations, particularly surrounding areas of development that were not central to the people who developed and utilized that language. This makes it difficult to translate concepts that are self-evident in one language easily or effectively into another language. This has created substantial confusion and misunderstanding in all fields of life-activity and conceptual development. In some cases, an attempt is made to bring across the concept through a detailed explanation that tries to pick up and communicate the nuances.

The Role of Free Will in the Surrender of the Ego

Our mental logic frequently stumbles over the apparent contradictions that lead us to adopt an extreme position over a more nuanced view of things. The debate about the role of free will in the processes of the yoga which involve the surrender of the ego to the action of the divine Force is one such area. Some people believe that surrender involves giving up any aspect of free will, and thus, they enter into a very passive state of fatality about what happens and when.

Changing Outer Actions Is an Essential Aspect of Inner Development

When an action takes place in the world, it has a number of effects both in the world, and in the psychology of the individual carrying out the action. Each action creates a formation, a rhythm, or a solid result that tends to perpetuate and repeat itself on an ongoing basis. Thus, the more we carry out specific forms of action, the more difficult they are to change or remove. This is the secret of why habits, addictions and instincts are so hard to change.

Self-Deception Manifested Through Judgment of Others

Self-deception can take the form of a judgmental attitude regarding the thoughts, feelings or actions of others. Particularly if an individual has worked to try to eliminate certain things within himself, he has a very close relationship to those things, he can feel the vibration and a lot of effort has gone into finding ways to partially or entirely neutralize them in his life. He may have succeeded for the most part in doing so, yet can still recognise and understand these vibratory patterns when they arise in others around him. Both the negative and the positive sides of that vibration rema

The Limits and the Effectivity of Prayer

When we reflect on what we mean by prayer, and what expectations we have for it, we can determine both the limits and the uses of prayer in navigating our way through life, and obtaining results aligned with our aspirations. In the USA it is common for people to send “thoughts and prayers” for those subject to mass school shootings, for instance, when they have little or no interest whatsoever in actually addressing the underlying causes and doing anything at all to mitigate the problem.

The Experience and Difficulty of Drawing Inwards in the Consciousness

Until an individual has an actual experience of what the Mother calls ‘interiorisation’, there is no real way to understand what it is about. Many people believe that if they sit quietly in meditation, or follow an internal train of thought, that they have an inner experience, but this is not what the Mother actually refers to. These things are still functions of the surface being, the exte al personality, and can be likened to the earth’s thin layer of topsoil.

Influence of the Supramental Principle on Earth

The supramental consciousness, as the next evolutionary stage, will eventually resolve the difficulties of the transitional period and establish itself on earth. The question then arises, what is the relationship between the gnostic beings and the existing organisation of beings rooted in body, life and mind. Sri Aurobindo reminds us that we are obviously dealing with speculation at this point.

The Limitations in the Concept of Free Will

We believe we have free will. We are confronted with choices and make a decision and carry it out and believe that this decision was made freely by the individual we identify as ourself. At the same time, we can recognise the step-wise development which is called ’cause and effect’, or the law of Karma.

Interpreting Actions in the World Based on Our Preconceived Ideas and Notions

In the Mahabharata, a story is related that illustrates the inability of anyone to judge an action by the outer form it takes or the result that eventuates. The birth of Bhishma is related in the Adi Parva. Prince Shantanu fell in love with a beautiful woman he met and asked her to marry him. She agreed on the condition that he never question any of her acts. She gave birth successively to a number of sons, and immediately took them to the River Ganga and drowned them, one after another. This went on for a number of times.

An Integral Yoga involves Knowledge, Devotion, Works and Self-Perfection

The integral yoga takes as its goal something far different than most of the individual yogic paths. The goal here is not liberation from the world, dissolution of the individual, or renunciation of action. Rather, the integral yoga calls for the liberation of the nature and the transformation of the human instrument to become a ready and receptive instrument of the divine action in the world. The ego-personality must be surrendered in order to create the necessary openness and responsiveness to the divine implementation.

Vigilance

The ancient texts, such as the Upanishads or the Dhammapada, focus on distinguishing the true and ete al, from the transitory and illusory existence upon which most people spend their time and attention. Thus, the term ‘vigilance’ means something entirely different than what a person, awake in the exte al world, would take it to mean.

The Process of the Supramental Manifestation and Its Integration into Life on Earth

The consciousness of Matter could not anticipate or dream of the manifestation of the Life-principle, and the vital living plant and animal consciousness could not anticipate the advent and impact of the mental consciousness. Similarly, the mental consciousness cannot truly understand nor anticipate the appearance of a being organised under a principle of consciousness so far beyond the mental, as the mental is beyond that of the plant and animal stage of consciousness.

The Development of the Human Being and the Transcendence of the Human Being: Personal Growth and Inner Growth Defined

Personal growth and inner growth, the enhancement of the human being and its capabilities and the transcendence of the human being to develop a being awake and active with a new level of consciousness, are not in conflict with one another. The human being must develop to a certain degree to truly effectuate the necessities for transcendence. At the same time, in the integral yoga, where the purpose is not abandonment of life, but the transformation of life, the two processes actually go hand in hand and complement one another.

An Integral Repose — the Ideal State of Sleep

Usually when most people go to sleep, they simply ‘let it happen’. This carries with it all of the mental, emotional, vital-nervous, and physical energy pent up in the being at the time, into the sleep state. Add to this mix the state of fatigue that prevails, and it can lead to restless, or dull sleep, chaotic dreams and confused awareness at the times of light sleep or waking.

The Evolution of Occult Powers

From the point of view of animals, we may assume, the actions, and the powers that drive them, of human beings are some kind of ‘occult powers’ about which the animals know nothing. These actions may seem miraculous but they are in reality expressions of the evolution of the mental stage of the evolution of consciousness and are quite natural powers expressed by Mind.

Understanding the Witness Consciousness — the Separation of Purusha and Prakriti

We tend to identify with the perceptions, sensations, desires, feelings and thoughts we experience and through the ego-consciousness, we take ownership of them and believe that they are what makes up our unique individuality. When we sit quietly, and turn our attention away from the outer world, we experience the internal dialogue that takes place as we process all of these impinging forces and their impact on our brain and nervous system. We remain identified with them.

Three Necessary Conditions to Receive and Act Under the Impulsion of the Divine Force

As long as we identify with the individual ego-personality, we remain bound to the limits of the body-life-mind complex. The action of the Divine Force under such conditions is necessarily diffused and diluted. The energy is mixed with the much more fragmentary and limited goals and objectives of the human individual and the result is thereby very much weakened.

Conditions for the Practice and Progress on the Path of the Integral Yoga

Some attend a church on an occasional or weekly basis, and use that time as their practice of religion.

The Ego-Viewpoint Provides Limited and Inaccurate Assessments of Events

If we review our lives through the lens of ‘history’, that is, looking back over the events of our lives from where we are today, we can see that things we thought, at the time, were positive things were in some cases, highly detrimental to us over time; and similarly, things we found distasteful or bad may turn out to have been very positive from this view.

Each new evolutionary stage of consciousness takes place within the framework of the previously evolved stages and over a course of time as adaptation of that framework must occur to ‘prepare the ground’ for the new action of consciousness. Close Observation Can Identify the Influence of Vital Beings and Forces

One of the key points in any attempt to change one’s actions or reactions, one’s behaviour or characteristic ways of responding to situations, is to determine, through careful observation, that these things are not an essential part of oneself or one’s character; rather, that they are exte al to oneself, and thus, can be changed or dispensed with more easily than if one accepts their centrality in one’s own being.

Impersonal and Personal Aspects of Consciousness in the Universal Manifestation

Our understanding of existence is very much rooted in our own anthropocentric view of things. The Intellect Does Not Have Direct Knowledge

The mental intellect receives impulses through the senses, organises them, and trues to determine what is true based on that. It then builds hypotheses, theories and ideation around its assortment of perceptions, memory, and experience based on various principles of symbolic logic that it has developed. The mind is a dealer in symbols, and its knowledge is therefore indirect.

Spirituality and Family Life

For spiritual and religious aspirants, there has always been a pressure to give up the focus on family life due to the inherent distraction that a family creates for the seeker. Whether the seeker takes vows and enters a monastery or cloister, or leaves family behind to follow a particular spiritual teacher, or reaches a stage in life to enter the forest and take up the life of the spiritual aspirant full-time, the traditions of the world have made it clear that family is at best a distraction, and at worst, a serious bondage that can hinder the spiritual focus.

Immortality in this Body is Not the Transformation Sought by the Integral Yoga

The “fountain of youth”, the elixir of immortality, attaining ete al life… these are various ways the aspiration of humanity has found expression for the conquest of death. Some who take up the integral Yoga latch on to the eventual idea of the supramental transformation leading to immortality and believe that they will become immortal in this body in this life. Sri Aurobindo, however, has made it very clear that this does not represent his view of the matter.

Trapped by the Social and Moral Code, or Beyond Good and Evil?

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote that certain individuals, by virtue of their innate status as superior beings, could not be bound by social rules or morality or ethics. While the implication may be understood to apply to those who have evolved beyond the ‘need’ for such contextual social rules, the actual understanding and application of his philosophy has made it clear that social norms were able to be trampled underfoot by those who declared themselves to be superior.

Distinguishing Concentration and Meditation from One Another

If we observe the mental status that takes place at times when we focus on achieving some objective or other, taking a test, working on a project, running a race, playing music, or creating some work of art, for example, we see that the attention is focused intensely on the task at hand, and there is in most cases, little perception of extraneous sensations or matters, or even of the passage of time. This is concentration.

The Nature of the Subconscient Level of Consciousness in Man

Finding the Balance Between Activity and Rest

With the advent of modern society, the instantaneous technological experience, and an exte al life that puts a value on being active, being productive, we see the increased pressure for people to stay in motion without taking into account the factor of fatigue and the need for rest. People tend to brag about how many hours they work, how little sleep they get, and how active they are at every moment. It is almost as if any time spent in quiet reflection, simply breathing, daydreaming, sleeping or otherwise engaging in ‘quiet time’ is considered to be time ‘wasted’.

The Vital Nature: Transformation Not Suppression

The vital has a natural tendency to seek for the fulfillment of its being in some form of enjoyment. In the exte al surface being, this enjoyment takes the form of a seeking after pleasure. With this seeking after pleasure, however, comes also the experience of pain. Pleasure and pain alte ate and eventually the seeker understands that transitory pleasures and pains, the operation of the dualities of the life of the senses, is not actual fulfillment, nor does it solve the significance of purpose of one’s life.

Other Domains and Worlds Exist Beyond the Limits of Our Waking Awareness

When we reflect deeply on the development of life and mind out of Matter, it becomes clear that they are not able to manifest in Matter if they do not already exist in their own right and in their own domain. Seers and mystics have described vital worlds. Teilhard de Chardin described a mental sphere, which he called the ‘noosphere’ which encompassed the mental force in its own right. Similar to the ionosphere, or the biosphere, the noosphere created a range of its own vibratory level within which the actions of mentality could take place.

Understanding the Masks, False Fronts and Deceptive Appearances We Present to the World and to Ourselves

It is relatively easy to recognise that we are putting up a false front in our dealings with society. We greet people with a smile while in our minds, we may be having an opposite feeling about the person. We flatter people to get ahead in society, knowing that the flattery is not based on reality, but is meant to gain a certain position or end result. Similarly we mask our own feelings, intentions and thoughts in order to appear more successful, more important and more powerful than we really are.

The Influence of the Awakened Consciousness on the Circumstances of the Exte al Being and Life

If someone escapes a harrowing incident once, we tend to call it “luck”. But if it happens repeatedly in the course of an individual’s life, we have to look for some causative factor that is at work. Similarly, if someone has a bad experience, we will tend to call it ‘bad luck’. When it happens repeatedly through an individual’s life, again we have to look for a causative factor.

The Nature of the Illumined Mind

The aspiring yogic practitioner starts from the basis of the normal human egoistic standpoint of the mind-life-body complex. The process and method of perception, thought, logic, analysis, classification and labeling, reasoning, understanding and implementation in action is quite well-defined and is characteristic of what Sri Aurobindo calls the Mind. As previously noted, there are gradations of consciousness above the mental level.
