Message from Susun – April 17, 2012 The Goddess lives all around you. Bottle her up with this ancient remedy, reputed to be at least six thousand years old, from The Yellow Emperor, a healing text from China. Triple Goddess Elixir (my name for it) is said to be curative for any problem that a woman encounters. It can dissolve cysts in the ovaries and breasts, regulate menses, ease menopausal symptoms, strengthen the nerves and the heart, and increase serenity as well. I love the vinegar on salads. I reserve the tincture for tough cases.

Healthy Bones The Wise Woman Way c. 2001 Susun S Weed
My favorite herbs for postmenopausal women are horsetail, oatstraw, red clover, stinging nettle, seaweeds, and the plants rich in flavonoids. These gentle green allies are more like foods than drugs; they offer bone-creating, heart-protecting, disease-preventing, sex-enhancing optimum nourishment to the woman in the second half of her life. HORSETAIL Equisetum arvenser Ackerschachtelhalm, Prêle des champs Horsetail is particularly rich in glycosides which nourish hormones, heart, and bones, making it a special ally for post-menopausal women.
One of my first, and still one of my favorite, reasons for learning about plants was to become more in tune with my environment: the weather, the flows of water, the places of special energy, Mother Nature herself.

ENERGY & STAMINA THE WISE WOMAN WAY ~2002, Susun S Weed If having enough energy to earn your daily bread and to get all your chores done is a struggle for you. If you go to bed tired, but wake up even more tired. If you can't get up and go without coffee, or can't slow down and relax without alcohol. If your fatigue is ruining your mood and your friendships. Then it's time to build energy and stamina the Wise Woman Way.
I aspire to be a joyous human being. As with most aspirations: It is easier said than done. Easier imagined than put into practice. Easier to search for than to have. I want joy to roll like thunder across the hills and valleys of my life; I want surging winds of joy to carry me through loss and disappointment; I want joy to be an electrical rush that lights up my entire body when I succeed. What does it take to create a joyous existence? Is it possible to experience joy daily, not just in special circumstances?

Step 1: Collect Information As the mix of hormones in your blood changes during your premenopausal years, you may notice the effects on your gastrointestinal tract both directly - estrogen is a gastrointestinal stimulant and varying levels may swing you from loose stools to dry ones - and indirectly, as the hormonal load places ever heavier demands on the liver.

Here is the second installment of your Green Report for this month, featuring wildflowers of the fields. (Check out last week’s report for wildflowers of the forest.)
I love autumn, don't you? The days shorten and fall colors thrill my senses. Perennial roots get busy storing nourishment that will last them through the winter. And the meadows bloom with purple asters and riotous goldenrod flowers. Goldenrod (the Solidago genus, Asteracea family) is one of my favorite plants, and hopefully, soon it will be one of your favorites too.
Herbal medicine is the medicine of the people. It is simple, safe, effective, and free. Our ancestors knew how to use an enormous variety of plants for health and well-being. Our neighbors around the world continue to use local plants for healing and health maintenance, and you can too. In your first lesson, you learned how to "listen" to the messages of plant's tastes. And you discovered that using plants in water bases (as teas, infusions, vinegars, and soups) - and as simples - allows you to experiment with and explore herbal medicine safely.

Does the odor of sage evoke warmth, cheer, and holiday feasts for you? Sage has long been used to add savor, magic, and medicine to winter meals. Culinary sage is available at any grocery store, and sage is one of the easiest of all herbs to grow - whether in a pot, on a windowsill, or in the garden. So, grab some sage, inhale deeply, and let me tell you more about this old friend.
We are adapted to survive mild exposures to radiation. After all, the sun is a kind of controlled nuclear bomb and it releases a lot of radiation. Of course, this radiation, and man-made radiation, can also cause cancer and a host of short- and long-term health problems.
In the Green Report, I will tell you a little about six or more plants that are green the first week of each month. I hope this will tickle your fancy and get you interested in going outside, no matter what the weather, to interact with the plants. It's my way of sharing the green blessings. Wise Woman Ways to Boost Your Energy c. 2002 Susun S. Weed Almost every woman has, at one time or another, felt so fatigued she wanted to cry. But for some women, and for a variety of reasons -- including menopause, caring for a new-born, working odd hours, chronic anxiety, and poverty, to name only a few -- fatigue is a constant, not an occasional, problem.

FIRST AID FOR BACKACHE - Heat - a warm bath, a hot shower, a hydroculator, a hot water bottle, a towel dipped in boiling water - will provide temporary relief for most backaches. - Tiger Balm, Olbas, Zheng Gu Shui, Wintergreen oil and other homemade or purchased herbal liniments and rubs can penetrate into deep muscle tissue to relieve tension and pain. They work best if followed by moist heat.
Mint Honeys c. 2012, Susun Weed Mint honeys are a delicious way to prevent and treat winter miseries: the flu, colds, and coughs especially. I usually make mine just before the frost takes down the tender mints, but January is not too late to get some started if you have access to hardy mints. (See last week's green reports for some choices.) Overwintering rosemary, sage, thyme, and lavender appreciate a haircut about now, for lush spring growth.
“I am the Grandmother of all growth, all growing things, all life. I am the grandmother of bacteria and viruses as well as plants and animals, fish and insects.
