Coping with Anxiety

Over the last 10 years I have noticed something strange evolving. I have patients coming in with their chief complaint being, “I am anxious all the time.” I have family members and friends telling me the same thing. But what has changed? Has the change occurred in our genetic makeup, or is something in our lives increasing our anxiety levels? Something certainly seems to be causing the increase in anxiety. What is anxiety?

Creating the Anti-Retirement Plan

Last week we discussed why retiring is not something people should do. Instead of making plans for retirement, it is better to plan for a long life of happiness. An easy way to do this is to ask, "How would I have to live my life so that I would never need to retire - so I can live life to the fullest until there is no more life to live?” Creating a Financial Plan Unfortunately, money does not grow on trees. In order to enjoy life, you have to have money. So you have to have a plan in place to ensure you have money to help you shape the life you want to live.

Stay Healthy with Proper Nutrition

By: Dr. Tim My business partner recently told me a story about his dad. His dad works at a waste treatment facility, where once a year they have to close the facility so they can sweep the undigested vitamins off of the floor. How gross is that? But it brings up a really good point. Everyone needs a multivitamin, but is yours doing you any good?

The 85/15 Rule for Healthy Eating

By: Dr. Tim Last night my wife made chocolate chip cookies. For those who don’t know it, my wife makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the entire world. She only makes them to torture me. She fills the entire house with the aroma and then the cookies sit on the cooling rack saying, “Eat me now.” (It’s true. I can hear them.) They are never satisfied. If I eat one, the others just start calling louder: “Eat us too.”

The Secret to Great Wealth

I love being rich! My guess is the previous sentence conjured up some sort of image or emotion inside you as you read it. You probably instantly thought about money. Isn’t it funny that a sentence of four words can bring up emotion? Here are some typical responses to the above sentence. I bet you do – jerk! I would love being rich also. I love being rich, too. That's easy for you to say. How much does it take to be rich? What a cocky statement.

Why You Need a Health Plan

How many of us have actually taken the time to sit down and develop a plan for health? How many of us just go day-to-day, constantly changing plans (or not making plans), just wondering, and hoping, we’ll stay healthy. My experience has been that most of the people who come to me for personal coaching don’t really have a health plan in place. They drift from plan-to-plan trying to find something that meets their lifestyle needs.

An Angel in Disguise

Have you ever had something happen to you that was so bad it made you feel worn down? For me, that event was my first marriage. It was a nightmare. To be honest, I married a guy I should never have married. Even on our wedding day, I felt it wasn’t right. But I walked down the aisle anyway. We were unhappily married for five long years. We frequently argued. He became verbally abusive. I continued to stay. After 3 years of marriage, our son was born. He was my saving grace. I poured every ounce of love and attentio I had into that little bundle of joy.

How to Avoid Financial Divorce

One of the most common problems in relationships, and the most common cause of divorce, is arguing about money. I believe the best way to stop arguing is to get on the same page. That starts by having a monthly finance meeting. Pam and I recently sat down to do our December monthly finance meeting. We went over our budgets, our investments, our cash, our assets and our liabilities during the meeting. It is a meeting we are committed to having every month. Hope Isn’t Good for Finance

Writing Self Improvement Goals

Today it is time to start setting your self improvement goals for 2011. To help you get started on those goals, take out your journal and do the following: 1. Determine where you need improvement Decide what areas of your life need the most improvement. Are you reading at least 10 pages a day in a good book? Are you attending at least one seminar a year to improve your character? What are your hobbies? When was the last time you started a new hobby? Remember your mind is a muscle, so it needs to be worked. When you stop working your brain, it will stop working for you.r

Secret Ingredient to Weight Loss

Feeling stressed? There’s a pill for that. Want to loose weight? There’s a pill for that too. Sadly, many patients I see today have been ingrained to expect pills to solve their problems, especially for weight loss. I recently had a pleasant, 42-year-old, lady come into my office with complaints of fatigue. Additionally, she wanted to lose weight, and she was feeling a bit anxious. As I began explaining to her the key things she needed to do to boost her energy and loose weight in the process, she stopped me with a sentence all too familiar.

Riding the Leadership Rollercoaster

They were the best of times; they were the worst of times. . . How often when you look at your business have you thought to yourself, "Wow, I cannot believe how great of a staff we have right now? They are all working together as a team. They make my job so easy." Then, two months later, while having your third "intervention" in a week with a troubled team member, you think to yourself, "Wow, I have 18 people working for me and 16 of them are either miserable or causing problems for every one else. They are killing me."

Are you doing these exercises?

Exercise is an important part of your lifestyle, but it involves more than just physically moving and working out. Exercising your brain and stimulating it to continue to grow through exercises of the mind is extremely important. At birth, your brain contained about 100 billion neurons, or nerve cells, waiting to find a network of sorts to connect to. As you grew, your brain started to eliminate neurons that were unable to find connections. The good news is that as you age, you brain has the opportunity to produce new neurons and make new connections if you exercise it.

The Key to Good Weight Loss

Eating well is not always easy. You are constantly surrounded with an abundance of not so healthy choices to eat. While it’s okay to eat them periodically, if you want to stay healthy, you should do so in moderation. The key to staying healthy is to become a seeker of good foods. I love fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, lean meats, nuts, and whole grain breads. These things are delicious. I love to eat. I love to sit down to a nice home cooked meal, and I love going out to a restaurant with some friends. I never feel guilty about what I eat. You don’t have to either.

Rekindle Your Romance with Surprise

Last week my wife, Pam, told me she had a surprise for me on Thursday and Friday. I didn't think much about it and marked those two days off. Pam has a history of planning fun little ove ight trips for us, so I assumed that must be the case. We got up as usual Thursday morning and went to the gym. Interestingly, there were no bags packed, nothing was in the truck, and she told me just to wear jeans and a t-shirt. We drove to get fuel and stopped for a breakfast burrito. Then Pam told me to drive to the private airport near our home.

Three Steps to Wealth

At one time I lived in what could be described kindly as, “Not a very nice place to live.” Let me give you a better visual. It was a $400 a month, one bedroom apartment. The location according to most was described as “a bad area”. I didn’t realize it at the time, but living there was a huge blessing for me. I wasn't poor, but I was broke. I had no money and no means of making any. But more importantly, I absolutely hated my situation.

Find the Hidden Sugar and Lose the Weight

Every day patients come into my practice and ask me why they cannot lose weight. You would not believe the multitude of excuses I have heard from people who just can’t seem to lose the extra pounds; everything from being born with a slow metabolism to thyroid problems and my personal favorite, “I am fat because I enjoy being fat.” As I teach people the principles of maintaining a healthy weight, I am constantly amazed at how often I hear, “I am already doing all that stuff. There is something about me that is different. Isn’t there some drug you can give me to take the weight off?”

The Extraordinary Human Body

Your heart beats 100,000 times a day. Your blood vessels, if laid end-to-end, would cover 75,000 miles. Your kidneys filter over 50 gallons of blood a day. You don’t think about any of it, and it still happens. The human body is an amazing thing, and all you need to do to take care of it is exercise and eat right. But do you? You have the easy part of the deal. What if you were responsible for generating ATP inside your mitochondria millions of times a day? It is amazing how hard we make things that are so easy to do, especially when it comes to taking care of our bodies.

One Simple Tip that Can Change Your Life Forever

I took care of a man in my clinic the other day who had retired a few months before. He had worked hard all his life; he was honest, hardworking and raised children that were fairly successful. He was in my clinic because he was depressed. He was depressed because he felt like he no longer had a reason to get up in the morning.

8 Steps to Living Younger

By: Dr. Tim I love birthdays. People call you and you realize how blessed you are. At the same time, you start to think about your own mortality and your health. I don’t get nearly as conce ed about how long I am going to live as I do about my quality of life until I die. As I talk to patients, I get the sense that I am not alone in this. It seems most of us just want to be as healthy as possible while we are alive. Let me share with you some things we can all do to keep ourselves healthy as we age: 1) Decrease the amount of calories that you eat.r

Three Minutes to A Pain Free Life

My back started hurting about a month ago for no real obvious reason. At first I thought it was due to my revised workout routine during my rehabilitation for a shoulder injury. I figured the pain would go away. But it didn’t. It stuck around day after day, week after week. It was an odd pain in that it only showed up when I was sitting and leaning forward. I started to worry. I take care of a lot of patients with chronic back pain, and I really didn't want to go down that road. I wanted to find something I could do to make my body feel better.

Is Equity Tied Up In Your House?

I have always been taught that becoming debt free is the thing to strive for. The American philosophy is, “If you can pay off your cars and your house, you can then live stress free.” Why wouldn’t you want to pay your mortgage off early? If you add up the interest you will be paying over the 15 to 30 year term of your mortgage, you will probably become clinically depressed and have to sit in a dark corner and cry. Obviously the thing to do is get it paid off sooner to avoid interest charges.

Redefining Quality Family Time

There is something truly special about a well bonded family. Some of the closest families are those where there is only a one parent household. Sometimes single parent households bring out bonds between a parent and a child that might not have existed otherwise. Unfortunately, sometimes those households are often most at risk of losing quality family time together.

The Real Health Care Crisis…

The moon is just above the horizon and is about half full and a burnt orange color. It shines off the ocean and provides the perfect tranquil setting. I just finished a Red Stripe beer, as is my tradition when I visit Jamaica, and I’ve been having a conversation with one of the locals about USANi Bolt, who is now a Jamaican and world icon.

The Power of Ten

For years I have recommended everyone read at least 10 pages a day in something inspiring, motivating, or educational. Reading 10 pages a day will probably not change your life tomorrow or the next day. In fact you may not notice anything for quite some time. But just think, a mere 10 pages a day equals 3,650 pages, or approximately 10-12 good books, a year. Can you imagine the impact reading 10 to 12 positive, life changing, books a year could have on your life? From experience, I can tell you it will change your attitude, your health, your relationships and your checkbook if you let it.r

Lose 30 Pounds in 14 Days

There is a new diet out that should really shake things up. People claim to lose as much as 30 pounds in 14 days. Apparently eating the right combination of food inhibits the hypothalamic response to hunger cravings so you are not hungry. At the same time, the increase in energy metabolism via glycolysis and ATP production burns fat at an accelerated rate. The diet consists of eating eggs and grapefruit for breakfast while consuming eggplant and steak at night. You only eat twice a day and meditate about eating four times per day.

Reduce Stress Today thru Forgiveness

Forgiveness is often a hard thing for people to grant to others. For some reason, it’s easier to hold onto a grudge. Perhaps it’s because granting forgiveness means letting go of hurt and pain. Perhaps it’s because holding onto the story of how you were wronged is what empowers you. Maybe it’s because granting forgiveness to others makes you feel like less of a person. I read these words recently, and I think they are important for you to read to: “I don't forgive people because I'm weak. I forgive them because I'm strong enough to know that people make mistakes.”

Don’t Let Injuries Stop Your Health

I recently dislocated my shoulder playing hide and seek with my kids. Now before you start laughing (I know…too late) let me explain. We were playing a serious game of hide and seek in the dark. I was trying to pull myself up to a shelf where I could lay down and hide. As I got to the top of the shelf, I slipped. I managed to catch myself on two different shelves at different heights and quickly felt a pain in my left shoulder. I decided to ignore it and attempted to reach for the shelf again.

Why You Shouldn't Retire

A year ago, I had a patient come into my urgent care clinic. He was excited to tell me he was finally going to retire. For over 40 years he had run a successful business in our community. He and his wife had looked forward to the day he could retire. They had been putting money away in their 401K and sticking to the plan their financial advisor had given them. Finally, it was time to sell the business and walk away into retirement bliss.
