Dealing with Anxiety, Fear and Panic

Worrying about money, being anxious about job security, worrying about children, fearful of personal security, feeling inadequate – these are the things that occupy the normal mind. Unfortunately, psychology has proven time and time again that the normal mind is plagued by negative thought. This negativity is formed in the subconscious – that part of the mind that was inculcated with this form of negative thinking during our formative years – and is fed by the ubiquity of bad news, negative comment and the horror stories on which the mass media thrive.

Change Your Life – Starting Today

If you’ve got everything that you want out of life and want for nothing at all, in any aspect of your life, do not read this article. Everyone else – read on! From my experience in dealing directly with clients for the last fourteen years, or through my online workshop, I reckon everyone else includes almost everyone. Ask yourself these simple questions: Are you 100% happy with yourself? Do you absolutely adore your job? Have you more than enough money? Are you as fit, trim and healthy as you really would love to be?

Strategies for Effortless Business Success

What a strange title for an article given all the gloom and doom that's doing the rounds at present! Most interestingly, how did the word "Effortlessly" get into the title? Surely, hard work is a virtue, God loves a try-er and you have to work hard to be a success. All these statements are wrong. I've been working with big business leaders and business owners - large and small - for over thirteen years.

Personal Success and the Importance of Perseverance

Perhaps this is an unusual introduction to an article on personal development or self improvement but, I would like to start by quoting 50 Cent – yeah, the rapper 50 Cent – who said “Most people can’t handle boredom. That means they can’t stay on one thing until they get good at it. And they wonder why they’re unhappy.” Unfortunately, we have a big problem with patience and perseverance because we live in a world where we expect instant results. If we’re hungry, we want fast food!

Personal Development: Getting Results

I hear from quite a number of people – clients and readers of my Personal Development Ezine – who tell me that they have become far calmer, more aware and focused as a result of the various little “mental exercises” that they undertake to banish stress and move themselves in the direction that they want their life to go. Indeed, I regularly get feedback from some clients who tell me that their lives have changed immeasurably and that they have seen some or many of their goals being achieved almost effortlessly – some have told me that it’s like ticking things off a shopping list!

How to Break Away from Frustration and Worry

In business – and often in our personal lives – frustration and worry go hand in hand. We get frustrated that our efforts are not receiving the acclaim that we believe we deserve and we get worried that, if things continue like that, we’re either not going to be the success we want to be or, worse, as a recent survey reported, that we won’t have enough money to do even some of the simple things we want to do. It could be said that frustration and worry are part of the human condition – but they’re not. They are an intrinsic part of human conditioning – not the human conditio

Personal Development – It’s About Doing Things Differently

I have no idea exactly how many personal development, self improvement or so-called self help books were sold over the last year – but I do know that it is one of the fastest areas of growth in the publishing world with millions of books being sold every year. I also know that these self help books aren’t making a blind bit of difference. How do I know that? Well, turn on your TV, open your newspaper or take a quick glance at the web’s chat-rooms and forums. The world is a more insecure, fearful and confused place than it ever was.

How to Deal with Fear, Stress & Anxiety

I spent some time with a client last week who talked of his fears for the state of his business, how he was afraid of what others would think of him if his business collapsed and how he was afraid of where is marriage was going as a result. Although he believed his problems to be unique, the conversation reminded me of many that I have had over the recent past. It reminded me of the proliferation of media commentaries at present that “markets are gripped by fear”, people are “fearful for their jobs” and that people are “afraid they will lose their homes”. All these problems ar

Personal Development – Mission Very Possible!

Unfortunately, most people look at life through dark glasses and, consequently, everything looks gloomier than it should. This is normal because the normal mind is hard-wired to look at reality by filtering it through our conditioning and, in doing so, it is more likely than not that the mind will focus on negative rather than positive conditioning. This mental frailty is what is keeping your life on hold.

How to Set Your Goals

For all that has been written and said about goal setting, I have met very few people who are sure of what their goals are. And, with the proliferation of self improvement books and personal development websites, you could be forgiven for thinking that, with so many people wanting to change their lives, all these people are sure of where they want to go. Not so because, in all my years working with people, it strikes me that people are more focused on running away from their current troubles – or perceived troubles – than running towards a goal that they really want.

You’ve Got to be Brave to be Different?

Simple question – how many good ideas have you had that you simply never bothered to do anything about? And, have you ever noticed that some of the most successful people are where they are as a result of some really simple idea – the kind of idea that you say to yourself “I could have thought of that!”? Well, we all have great ideas at least once in a while, we’re all struck by ‘inspiration’ from time to time – it’s just that normal people laugh these ideas off as a flight of fancy.

Personal Development and the Normal Mind

Nothing is more frustrating than trying to better yourself and being constantly beaten backwards. Embarking on the adventure of personal development can sometimes seem similar to trying to scale Mount Everest and finding that, every time you make a little progress, you suddenly start sliding down the mountain all the way back to base camp. You’ve done the training, got the right equipment and tools but you just don’t seem to be getting anywhere – and fast!

Self Improvement? No Need!

You don’t need self improvement. You’re perfect all ready – you just need to realize it. Some aficionados of personal development might call the process ‘self-realization’ – a big word (two actually) for something that is within every single person’s reach. There’s little pointing in clouding what comes naturally in some fog of mystique – little point in complicating the simply. Every sinlge one of us can achieve awareness and self fulfilment if we learn how to simply stop the incessant noise in our head. I think you know the noise that I’m talking about.

How to Cope with Stress

I’ve just spent a couple of days with a client here in the French Alps – someone who regards his personal development as of paramount importance in his life, someone who has altered his daily routine, going to bed one hour earlier to ensure that he has an extra hour each morning for meditation. He has been regularly meditating for up to an hour each morning for the last two years. The benefits? His health and fitness have greatly improved.

Crazy Parents - Crazy Children

The vast majority of people raising children are ill equipped for the job. Now, we all know the general comments like “How come they don’t teach you about this at school?” or “Why is there no training to be a parent?” But that’s not what I’m talking about. Those of us who are parents know that nothing, but nothing, actually prepares you for the day you bring your first child home from the hospital. But that’s not even what I’m talking about – I’m talking about something a lot more fundamental – and something that is ruining the next generations’ lives. Decades

Dealing with Difficult People

The secret to dealing with difficult people is to take the necessary action before they become difficult. Like everything else in life, if you deal with something before it becomes a problem, you’ll never have any major problems to deal with. The problem is, of course, that in the ordinary course of our everyday lives, we don’t do the small things that we know we should do, we don’t today what we can put off until tomorrow and, most importantly, we tolerate behaviour that we shouldn’t.

Mindfulness-Based Leadership Development

This article is about mindfulness-based, not mindfulness. For all it’s heralded and undoubted benefits – for example in the management of stress, the successful treatment of chronic depression and its application in sports (most notably golf, the NFL and rugby union), mindfulness has not made an impact in business.

Who You Really Are

There is a well-worm saying that suggests that perception is, in fact, reality. And, no matter how most thinking people might laugh off such a notion, the fact is that for the normal mind, reality is just that - the sum total of our perceptions. How we perceive the world, how it works and our place in it dictates how we behave. Most importantly of all, our own self-perception creates our reality - or, at least, our version of it.

Steps to Personal Development

I’ve just received an email from a reader who tells me that, after wasting many years on “normal” living and “normal” people, she is now determined to take the necessary steps to find peace of mind, contentment, happiness and success. Her use of the word “normal” refers to many of my articles and videos which explain that, in fact, so-called normal people are crazy. Years of research, when taken together, confirm just how crazy normal people are. In essence, the normal person’s life is controlled by their subconscious mind’s preference for dwelling on the past and the negative.

It Is What It Is

So many people struggle against things that they can do nothing about. So many people become upset or annoyed about things over which they have no control. And oh so few people take control of the one thing in life over which they can exercise absolute and total control. Like puppets, we allow our mood to be pulled up or down in tandem with the ups and downs of life. But the downs – or even just the “not-too-bads” – that we encounter are what they are. These things are sent to try us and most of us are found wanting.

Many people reading so-called personal development or self improvement articles or, indeed, any of the vast number of self help books that continue to proliferate will know all about the concept known as the Law of Attraction – that, by your state of mind, you attract into your life the things that you want out of life.

Most people will always find something to stress them out – their job, their boss, their financial situation, their husband, their wife, their boyfriend or girlfriend, their teenage children, their health, their golf, their holidays! When I enquired what the perceived problem might be, he told me “I’m stressed out because I’ve nothing to be stressed out about!” Seriously!

Are You Anxious, Nervous, Worried or Stressed?

Do you ever feel uncomfortable, anxious or tense? Are there things that you worry about – things that sometimes even keep you awake at night? Are you ever nervous or apprehensive? Do you get hassled or lose your temper easily? Do you feel that you suffer from stress? If you perceive yourself to be suffering from any of these afflictions, it is just that – nothing more than a perception. Because none of these problems is real – no matter how real they might appear to you, they are nothing more than creations of your own mind. You are letting your mind play tricks on you.

What is Personal Development All About?

I sometimes get very frustrated (it doesn’t last long!) when I see the extent to which Personal Development is hijacked by people whose sole focus is on money. Go on, Google ‘Personal Development’ – the number of sites that talk about becoming a millionaire, trebling your income, achieving financial freedom! Check out Amazon and there’s a plethora of books on the same thing. Sure, people worry about money and the irony is that if you worry about money, money worries you shall have – in abundance.

Stay Crazy or Succeed – It’s Your Call

There is over seventy years’ research that proves conclusively that you and I, as normal people, are crazy. Our minds control us, not the other way around as it should be – as sure a definition of madness as I have ever seen. The evidence started mounting up all the way back in 1936 when a certain Professor Stroop proved that our inability to pay attention even hinders us paying attention to what we want we have decided to pay attention to!

You Are Not Your Behaviour

Normal behaviour is rarely appropriate and often completely inappropriate if not totally bizarre. How could it be appropriate? Because normal behaviour is triggered automatically – you don’t have to think about it, you just react – by your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is fine tuned to enable you react, using functionality known, in psychological circles, as automaticity. It is this ability that has got us so far as the apparently ‘superior’ species!

Why Now is So Important

Surely we hit what might be described as the ‘peak performance zone’ when we are striving to achieve our goals. Goals, by their very nature, are things that we don't have at present – they are things that we are aiming for in the future. So why do so many personal development experts or ‘gurus’ place so much emphasis on the here and now? For example, the title of Ekhart Tolle’s book ‘The Power of Now’ says it all. What is the point of looking to the present moment if, at present, you find yourself in a place in your life that you want to get out of?

Meteoric Personal Development

Myself and my family recently spent an evening on our balcony star-gazing – watching the annual Perseid Meteor Shower – when the earth passes through a band of wayward comet grit. Many people might just see one shooting star in their lifetime – but, in the space of about twenty minutes, we counted a dozen. It was a humbling experience. Here we were, five insignificant dots on the balcony of a house – no more than a dot on this planet which, in itself is no more than a tiny pebble spinning at high speed through a vast space.

Personal Development - Get Out of Your Trance State!

The normal mind is anaesthetized. I’ve come across people who do things they know they shouldn’t be doing but they appear not to be able to help it. I know people who insist on reading every single email the moment it arrives even though they’re supposed to be in the middle of something important and they know that the majority of the emails that they read are a complete and utter waste of time. Indeed, recent research tells us that the average response time to an email is a mere six seconds. I’ve also recently been told that the average distance an email is sent is two hundred metres!

Boring Minds, Boring Lives

Over seventy years of psychological research proves conclusively that we live automatic lives. "Automaticity" is what psychologists call our extremely efficient ability to perform routine tasks without paying attention to them. Stop for a moment to reflect on how much attention you paid, this morning, to brushing your teeth, showering, shaving, walking or driving. Do you drive today the way you drove the first time you ever sat behind a steering wheel? We learn our routine tasks in two ways.

The Law of Attraction: What’s Best for You

A lot has been written and spoken about the “Law of Attraction” – some of it pure nonsense – like the quote on Larry King Live that similar energies repel (an old wives’ tale of like attracting like) – some of it more closely related to the truth of the laws of quantum physics that state without a shadow of a doubt that energy is responsive to energy. In other words, how you invest your energy evokes a response from energy in general.

Life Change: It’s Happening All the Time

The vast majority of people with whom I work talk about life change, as if it was something to be desired, something out of the ordinary, something that only happens when we arrive at major crossroads in our otherwise mundane lives. How little we know about the reality of life! Viewed in its most basic building blocks – cells, molecules, atoms, nuclei, superstrings – you life is in a constant state of change. Indeed, the only thing that is certain about your life is that it is changing all of the time.

Mind Body Spirit and the Power to Achieve Happiness and Success

Very often I find it difficult to explore some of the key concepts in what might loosely be described as personal development or self improvement, given that ordinary language and words prove wholly inadequate. For example, do the words ‘universal energy’ adequately capture the reality that you and I are simply vibrating energy, that we live in a world and universe comprised solely of vibrating energy and that all that energy is highly responsive? Does the sobriquet ‘Law of Attraction’ mean different things to different people?

Which Would Prefer? Advice on Goal Setting or Goal Getting?

It intrigues me – there is so much written on goal setting – and so little written on the much more important subject of goal getting. A client, Mike, recently told me that he’d been told, by his first mentor in business, that success comes from constantly setting goals. However, Mike soon came to the conclusion that, if you’re constantly setting goals, you end up living in a state of perpetual dissatisfaction – because you’re always looking forward to your goal, rather than living life to the full in the here and now.

Does Positive Thinking Really Work?

Just a couple of weeks ago, I spent a day with a doze "old-timers" clients with whom I've been working for years. Early on in the discussion, as we chatted about how psychology and quantum physics proves that you get what you expect, so that, if you expect something different, something different does, indeed, happen, one of the group mentioned that he tries to ensure that, each morning, he starts the day in a positive state of mind. We started talking about how many motivational experts claim great benefits for the technique of self-affirmation. You know the kind of thing.

If you want to achieve effortless happiness and success, you’re going to have to let go. You’re going to have to let go of your normal ideas of success, you’re going to have to let go of your attachments to the things that you want that, only when you get them will you feel successful. How You Are Who You Are

We are all victims. Whether we are aware of it or not is entirely a different matter. The facts are, however, as grown adults, we are all a product of the childhood years that shaped who we now believe ourselves to be. During those formative years, our subconscious minds learned about the world we live in and our place in it. It learned about our strengths and talents and, just as effectively, learned about our weaknesses and perceived inadequacies.

A great deal has been said and written about the so-called Law of Attraction’. It has been popularised by videos and books, like ‘The Secret’ and by televisions talk-show hosts such as Larry King. The Joy and Excitement of Living

Years of psychological research suggests that we are not living life to the full. This research concludes that we go through the motions of daily life, using the faculties of automaticity (to enable us perform almost everything mindlessly), categorization (so that we can pigeonhole every new experience or person that we meet and, in the process, experience nothing new) and recognition (the mental process whereby we try to make sense of what our senses are telling us by using our own “stored knowledge” the greater part of which is decades out of date).

How would you feel about the proposition that you can achieve anything – absolutely anything – in which you can believe? Well, whether you realize it or not, that’s what you’re actually doing at the moment – you’re living the life that you believe you can live. Years of research in various fields of psychology lead to the inexorable conclusion that normal people perceive only what they expect to perceive and experience only what they expect to experience.
