Burke Franklin is the president & CEO of JIAN (jee’-on) Software, a successful Silicon Valley software company renowned for BizPla Builder business plan software, popular for its for producing a comprehensive business plan.

Burke graduated from the University of Califo ia with a BA in business, plus a minor in electrical engineering—while there he started “The Auto Exchange,” a do-it-yourself used car business he ran from his apartment. He took his first corporate job as a field sales rep for Texas Instruments selling electronic components. Besides working in sales and management for mostly high-tech companies, Burke’s career also includes a position as the Electronics Buyer and a copywriter for the Sharper Image Catalog.
Management & marketing experience spans 35 years

With an extensive background in sales, marketing and management, Burke brings a very practical approach to everything he does. In 1995 Burke was elected to the White House Conference on Small Business and in 1996 he was nominated for Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year.” Also, Burke is an instrument-rated pilot, and is a second-degree black belt in TaeKwo Do. Burke’s book, Business Black Belt draws parallels from the martial arts and teaches you about building and running a business by using the disciplines of a karate master.

“I'm always hesitant about reading business books written by so called consultants. Anyone can give himself the title of consultant. All they have to do is read a couple of books on the latest business trends and start using the jargon picked up from the reading. What I love about Business Black Belt is that Burke Franklin has been down the road, up and down, several times. His is a narration from the trenches of battle, not from the comfort of a battle cruiser a few miles out at sea. He tells it to you with all the gory details that business life entails. Most of the books that are out there right now are written by infopreneurs that are trying capitalizing on our thirst for answers. Alas, most of these writers' knowledge of business consists of cashing the checks they receive from their publishers. The wisdom contained in this book is more valuable than what you'll learn from reading all the current business bestsellers. Buy this book. You can thank me when you're done.”
~ Adolfo Bernal Jr. "Adolfo" (Austin, TX)

I gave a speech to the Entrepreneurship Class at the University of Califo ia at Santa Barbara. I asked them what they thought it took to be successful in business. The words the students gave me were absolutely right-on. It occurred to me after I left what the wisdom of these words could also illustrate. Their words described what a success looks like from the outside-in. I’d heard similar words for years before and during the building of my business, but all of a sudden they had different meanings.

In many cases the customer is already sold – your job is to engineer the deal. I was visiting a friend in Colorado who really wanted to buy a new BMW. She was ready to trade in her old car, she had the money, good credit—everything. So I suggested that we go look at the cars. The BMW dealer had the perfect car — red, convertible, and loaded. The salesman was very nice, gave us the keys, and told us to enjoy ourselves. After driving around for a while, she obviously didn’t need to be convinced that this was the right car for her.

Many people think a set of financial projections is a business plan. Wrong. Experienced business people know that no matter how honest and forthright your financial projection is, it cannot present the full picture.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. . . Try salting the oats! ~ Anonymous Selling is often more than convincing someone to buy your product or service, but to also change what they already have or what they are doing now. Some customers are already interested in changing to something new and they know they need to buy something—perhaps your product or service. Others need to be made aware that what they have or are doing isn’t working and that something new is available and that they should upgrade as soon as possible.

Perhaps you've seen the film, "The Secret" which features interviews with many success gurus sharing how they made it -- I saw the video and thought it was pretty good. In my experience; however, there are a few more factors for achieving the success you want. Having owned my dream airplane, achieving a 2nd degree black belt, building a multi-million dollar business and enjoying an amazing relationship myself... I've studied how to become successful, get what you want, etc., read books, participated in seminars (about 25 years worth!), as well as studied my own experience.
