For over 20 years David Leigh Weber was a copywriter and brand strategist with clients primarily located in Silicon Valley. He worked with two-person startups, Fortune 10 multinationals, and everything in-between. His work generated tens of millions of dollars in sales, and helped launch numerous products, services and even companies.

Over time David realized that there was a core issue affecting everyone he interacted with — they were all trying to find some sort of ideal work/life balance. This seemed next to impossible in the frenetic and pressure-driven world that is high tech. Curious by nature, he knew there had to be an answer. After holding more than 30,000+ conversations and interviews with thousands of people including global leaders, entrepreneurs, corporate trainers, personal coaches, and other truly successful types he soon discovered that most people were approaching work/life balance the wrong way. The TRUE solution to work/life balance was something called flow, a person’s true life purpose.

By understanding flow a person can literally accomplish anything, including achieving that elusive ‘perfect’ work/home lifestyle. How? Everything attempted is done so because the person knows it will generate success. This dramatically reduces the time, effort and even money spent on attempting to reach work/life balance goals. Everything becomes effortless and second nature, just like breathing.

Unfortunately, David soon realized that people from all walks of life were ignoring their flow yet trying to succeed. They would approach their lives from an “intellectual” standpoint, telling themselves this is how to be successful whether it was or not. This severely hindered their abilities to advance both personally and professionally since they were always ‘swimming against the tide’ even when participating in career/personal development programs. Worse, traditional self help methods designed to “break through” blockages often had the opposite effect — more blockages were created since the participant felt s/he had failed. Why? Traditional programs took a one-size-fits-all approach and people simply aren’t designed that way.

That’s why in 2003 David decided to found what would ultimately become Learn About Flow, an organization dedicated to empowering people to find their true selves, what makes them their most successful on every level. Since that time Learn About Flow has helped hundreds achieve all the goals that work/life balance methods were supposed to achieve.

His work is not without controversy, since finding and understanding flow requires people to do many things that are counterintuitive to what they were taught all their lives. Yet once they do they soon realize that flow is the way the they were always supposed to be living!

Today David is an author (My Life Has No Purpose!), sought after speaker, online teacher & trainer, corporate trainer, and an evangelist for true mind-body-spirit wellness. He has a B.A. in English & History from the University of Rochester and an M.A. in Communications from the Newhouse School (Syracuse University). Originally from New England, David now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I’ll come right out and say that this article is a bit more metaphysical than others I have written. That said, I can almost guarantee that you’re going to experience what I’m talking about in your own life — and that will make things very real!

So many people I’ve interviewed and coached over the years seem to have the same basic issue. They achieved the education they needed, took all the necessary training, and found success in their careers as well as their personal lives. Yet something was missing. They didn’t feel like they had truly accomplished what they termed ‘success’. In other words, they felt stuck.

Yes, there are a zillion articles on how to find a job, write the best resume, etc. This article is about something you may not have considered before — how to look for a job from the inside out. Being out of work, finding a job and/or working a job you hate can cause a ton of stress in your life, not to mention angry, anxiety, worry and a host of other emotions. I've been there numerous times, and have experienced the feeling of being both helpless and worthless. And I would inevitably say, “why me? I’m a good person!” or something similar.

It’s that time of year again when people make New Year’s resolutions and swear up and down that they will both follow and succeed at them. That’s why gym membership skyrockets every January, diet plan sales soar, and so on. Everyone has the best intentions, and tell their friends and families what they will ‘guarantee’ accomplish come January. But, as history has shown, gym membership tapers off, people on diets gain more weight than before, and the majority of New Year’s resolutions go by the wayside or are left ‘until the next New Year’s”. And then there are the repercussions.

I was reading a fascinating article in The Economist the other day on how animals perceive time. The article was about research into critical flicker-fusion frequency (CFF), a fancy name for how fast an animal's eyes can refresh an image and thereby process information. Humans refresh their eyes at roughly 60 hertz, or 60 times a second. Dogs refresh at 80 hertz, which is why dogs don't like television — to them it looks like a series of still photographs, not moving pictures.

The back to school season is in full swing and with it comes even more issues regarding work/life balance. It's tempting to get really stressed this time of year, adjusting to a new schedule after the relaxing summer. And, as we all know, that stress is going to be increased once the holidays arrive and suddenly there are even more things to balance. A golden opportunity Okay, you're facing all this stress with more to come in a few months. How can this be a golden opportunity?

Insulting title, huh? The reaso I used it is it reflects the commo American myth that if you aren’t rich (or making ‘enough’ money) you aren’t working hard enough. I saw this in college when I worked in a factory. The way to make money was to work overtime, sometimes LOTS of overtime, so you could have the things you wanted. If you were white collar the solution was to work a second (or third) job to get what you wanted. Then, of course, there is the usual working late at the office to please the boss in hopes of someday getting that promotion.

Like it or not, you have to deal with money in order to survive in this world. It's part of our culture, and a core part of society. And since the beginning of time everyone and his brother has had “the answer” as to how to make money, lots of money.

How do you eliminate fear in your life? Here are five quick tips to get your started: 1) Understand what fear is First off, it’s important to understand that fear serves no purpose whatsoever. The phrase “we have nothing to fear but fear itself” is highly inaccurate. Why are you afraid of fear to begin with? Fear is paralyzing, and is also an indication that something is very wrong. You have heard said that animals can smell fear. They do this because they know their prey is unable to act, unable to act to get away. The prey are easy targets.

You may recognize that phrase from MAD comics, and it is said tongue-in-cheek. Unfortunately, today the irony seems even greater. Listen to the news, people on the street, or even friends and all you’ll hear is misery and doom. Just recently I caught a twenty second news promo, 20 SECONDS, which said, “Pregnant mother of two killed in her home. Details at 11.” You hear that (or watch the full story) and do you think you’re going to feel good about life? No, of course not, it’s another reason to worry.

Surprising title for an article, right? In today's society 'selfish' has such negative connotations how could anyone say it’s a positive thing? Let me explain. Traditionally the term ‘selfish’ has been associated with such things as being greedy or acting like an obnoxious fool. Those are the definitions with which most people associate the term, and the dictionary agrees. That's why children are always taught not to be selfish, and adults are always wary of others 'being selfish'.

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from David Leigh Weber

Most people approach work/life balance either 'intellectually' or by exte alizing, finding solutions outside themselves. The key to achieving work/life balance starts with knowing yourself first, what's called your flow. Once you do, work and life become seamless undertakings, and concept of balance goes away replaced by contentment, achievement, and overall success. Sound fantastic? It is, until you realize you were always meant to live this way!
