Mark G. Agresti, M.D. and Associates is a multi-disciplinary addictions and psychiatric practice made up of caring professionals who strive to provide to quality service based on the individual needs of our patients. Our practice focuses on the treatment of mental illness, addictions, dual diagnosis and outpatient detoxification from drugs and alcohol.

Detoxification and Addiction Treatment

Many alcoholics and/or drug addicts are unable to successfully "work" a recovery program until successful medical detoxification is accomplished. Medicine may be prescribed to reduce or eliminate alcohol cravings, hypoglycemia, depression, mood swings, anxiety, insomnia, tremors, memory loss, stomach and intestinal issues, and/ or other problems which prevent alcoholics and/or drug users from controlling their addictions.

The second phase of treatment for addiction is psychotherapy and Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. 12 Step Programs have demonstrated over time to be strong component of successful recovery. We strongly suggest that in conjunction with medical treatment, the individual attend a program that provides therapy, education and support

Dr. Mark G. Agresti & Associates have developed a State-of-the-Art detoxification program for effective addiction treatment. We have successfully treated addiction(s) to prescription and street drugs as well as alcohol in an outpatient setting.

Psychiatric Treatment

Dr. Dr. Mark G. Agresti & Associates have been treating a full range of psychiatric problems for 20 years in West Palm Beach. The practice consists of Psychiatrists, Nurse Practitioners and therapists who work as a team to provide outstanding care.

Treatment begins with the development of an accurate diagnosis based on the findings of a thorough psycho-social evaluation. The focus of treatment is to reduce symptoms, alleviate the presenting problem and improve the overall quality of life for the patient.

A treatment plan is developed between the patient and treatment providers. This may include prescribing the best medication for the presenting problem and/or working on the issues outlined in the treatment plan in therapy. Studies have shown that the best outcomes are reached through a combination of medication and therapy when indicated. Individual, marital, family, group and play therapy are various modalities used in treatment.

Dual Diagnosis

Many of the patients that are seen at our office are in need of treatment for Dual Diagnosis. This is where a patient has an addiction problem and at the same time psychiatric disorder. These cases can be quite complex as treatment must focus on both the addiction and psychiatric issues throughout the course of treatment.

Not too long ago, four local elementary school children ended up on respirators in the ICU after they each took 20 Coricidin tablets to get high. It was a good 36 hours before they were out of the woods. What started out to be an afte oon of fun, turned out to be a life-and-death struggle for the children and their parents. So, if you think that people (including kids) do not abuse over-the-counter drugs, think again. In my practice, I’m seeing this kind of abuse more and more. Hey, it’s cheap and it’s accessible (and, therefore a real problem).

A number of alcoholics and/or drug addicts find it difficult to effectively "work" a recovery program until effective medical detoxification is reached. Medicine may be given to reduce or get rid of alcohol urges, hypoglycemia, depression, mood swings, anxiety, sleeplessness, tremors, memory loss, stomach and intestinal conce s, and/ or other troubles which keep alcoholics and/or drug users from curbing their addictions.

It’s the Holy Grail in the world of addiction to find drugs that will block the craving for alcohol. There are three medications on the market that have been studied and show some benefits. Pros and Cons of Drug Used for Alcohol Dependency or to Block Craving Campral, also known as Acamprosate, is used to block craving. Studies have found a reduced incidence of relapse with veterans in Philadelphia who took this drug. The daily dosage is two 333mg tablets, three times a day, and in my practice dealing with addiction and alcoholism, that has a limited benefit.

I want to share two stories to help those with drug problems -- or those with loved ones who have drug problems -- see how addiction works and how it can be overcome. My clients, Belle and Bob, were both addicts. Belle managed to dig herself out. Bob did not. At the most basic level, these two people had bad relationships with themselves. It really all comes down to that. Improve your relationship with yourself and you can get better. Continue to hate yourself, and the ending can be very bad. Belle’s Story

Depression usually starts out simple. For my patient, Cindy, for example, it began with down days during her first semester in college, when she wouldn’t get out of bed. She did not leave her apartment, wore sweat pants all the time, stopped doing her hair and makeup, gave up her spin class, and neglected her bathing and hygiene. As time went on, she became more and more isolated from her friends. Her eating habits deteriorated -- Skittles and Chinese food became her staple, and in order to sleep, she took Benadryl with a giant glass of wine. Symptoms and Treatment of Depression

Initially the attraction is euphoria taking a mini vacation. Someone once told me getting high is like God putting a warm blanket around you and rubbing your temples telling you everything will be alright. This is a powerful draw. The mini vacation to escape life’s hardships becomes more frequent and all encompassing. Physically the body comes addicted. Psychologically the individual needs the drug to maintain emotional stability and to cope with life’s stress. Individuals with addicted family members are at an unfair disadvantage.

Let’s look at the opiates first. An opiate is a narcotic pain killer like Roxycodone, Oxycodone, Loratabs, Loracet, Methadone, Vicodin, Actiq, and Stadol. The action of these drugs may last varying amounts of time and has varying doses. For example, some people can be on 100mg a day of Oxycontin while others may take 1000mg a day of Oxycontin.
