The normal answer is, if you are asking the question then it is already a problem. True it is a bit of cliché but unfortunately it is also true. People seldom raise the issue to someone outside the relationship until they can no longer ignore it. You may have thought that there is a problem. You may have even brought it up with the drinker. You were almost certainly met with a dismissive denial that there could possibly be a problem and you were probably more than happy to accept the reassurances and bury the concerns and doubts till another bout of drinking makes them surface again.

Are you one of many people who live with someone who drinks heavily? Do you wonder whether your partner is an alcoholic. Well you are certainly not alone. For many people living with problem drinkers means agony and confusion wondering whether their partner is actually an alcoholic or whether they are making a fuss about nothing. This is a very real problem for many reasons.

People who live with an alcoholic have a tendency to spend a considerable amount (if not all) of their time trying to manage the alcoholic. They are trying to anticipate whether he will drink, when, how much and what the outcome will be. Or if he has already started drinking then they are trying to make sure that no harm comes to the family, home or the drinker or trying to get him to stop drinking. Do you identify with this situation? Do you spend most of your time looking after, worrying about or wondering how you can change your drinker?

If you live with an alcoholic you will almost certainly feel shame. Some people will experience it to a very high level others less so but almost everyone who lives with an alcoholic experiences it to some degree. You will probably feel anxious that people will discover your secret, that they will judge you and, inevitably, will find you unacceptable to be around decent people. Seeing it written down like that it probably seems stupid. How could anyone feel that.

Treatment for people with addiction problems, particularly in a residential rehab, is notoriously expensive. The fees for such treatments often run into thousands of pounds or dollars a month. Unfortunately, most people who have addiction problems cannot afford such expensive treatments, and so have to go without this kind of help. Recent developments on the internet have brought a new range of treatments that are more within the price range of those who need them.

You know that you have got a problem with booze when: 1 before every party or social occasion your partner asks you “not to drink too much tonight”. 2 you feel that everyone in your company drinks too slowly or doesn’t know how to let their hair down and have a good time – like you. 3 you are having extra drinks when you go to the bar, because (see number 2). 4 you hate going to any social occasion if there is no opportunity to drink. 5 you think about drinking constantly, can’t wait to finish work to go and have a drink, can’t wait to be fini

“The two pillars of 'political correctness' are: a) willful ignorancernb) a steadfast refusal to face the truth”r George MacDonald Last week (19/05/06) Sandra Kanck, an MP in Australia, stood up in Parliament and told the house that ecstasy “is not a dangerous drug” and “could have been used to treat victims of last year’s killer bushfires”. Since then the Prime Minister of Australia, her own party and the press have vilified her and called for her resignation. To some extent one can see why there might be such a reaction.

How to get started

Really very excited. 24/7 Help Yourself has just gone live. This unique website is the culmination of over a year of work. I built it for people who were worried their drinking, who think they may be drinking too much, who want to do something about it, but don't want to go to a doctor or AA.

If you feel that describes you then 24/7 Help Yourself is a new concept that puts you in charge of your life and your drinking. Based on the latest research 24/7 Help Yourself is designed to give you the tools to empower you to change your life. Sign up FREE.

Depending who you are and what your interest is, there are various ways of getting started with me.

If you are interested in getting in touch for research, service evaluation, courses, or some other professional reason I am always happy to hear from you. If you just want to swap experiences, opinions or general fat chewing, again I am happy to hear from you, but may be a bit slower at answering but I will get there. Click on the contact tab at the top of the page and fill in the form that appears.

In my next project I am interested in interviewing partners of problem drinkers about their experiences and their methods of coping. If you are the partner of a problem drinker, current or past, and are willing to be interviewed (by phone) please get in touch. As an initial phase to this project, we are inviting questions from partners of drinkers. We feel that you are a neglected group by the treatment industry and the little support provided appears to bear little resemblance to what you actually need or want. To rectify this neglect we have created a membership website especially for partners of drinkers. We call it Bottled Up.
