From being mou ful occasions funerals have evolved into highly social events. When I grew up in the sixties and seventies anything associated with death was dreaded and dreadful. Today, a person no longer dies; he passes on and families no longer mou the death of loved ones. Instead, they celebrate the life of the one who has passed on. Funerals are no longer mou ful and solemn occasions and people attending the ceremonies are now encouraged to be joyful. How things have changed!

Domestic violence is a global phenomenon which has, for decades, been a scourge in society. However, the fact that it has been in existence for ages can never make it acceptable. Instead, it places a greater responsibility on modern society to find new approaches to deal with the problem so that it can be eradicated or at the very least, significantly decreased. There are many agencies and organizations worldwide involved in the battle against domestic violence and it is hoped that their strong synergies will yield productive results in the very near future.

There is no greater teacher than experience and as we grow older we learn(or ought to)valuable lessons about life. Important among these are: 1. Appreciation- We become more appreciative of the things and persons we once took for granted. We begin to see the efforts behind the things that are done by others for our comfort and happiness; the loving and selfless acts of caring relatives, co-workers and friends.

Generally, failure is viewed as something negative. For those experiencing it, it may become the end of the road and therein lies the monster for simply, fear of failing again may cause a reluctance to move on. "Children are a gift from the Lord;a real Blessing". The Holy Bible calls upon parents to love their children. Not only must parents execute this noble duty, but they must, in so doing, protect, feed and nurture their children throughout their childhood and provide them with sound values which will equip them to take up responsible positions in society.

I am from the island of Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean. One of the first things that every Dominican child learns is that we have 365 rivers; one for every day of the year. This has always been one of our richest blessings. We speak proudly of our rivers in poems, songs and travel magazines and to every stranger that we meet for we know that God has blessed our country like no other with these glorious bodies of abundant, fresh, clean water originating from the pristine, green mountains.

Are fathers playing a greater role in parenting today? Today’s fathers appear to be playing a more active role in parenting than their predecessors. Traditionally, in my culture, raising the child has been viewed as the responsibility of the mother. The father’s role was more in the domain of provider, supporter and disciplinarian. Hence, the father would provide the needs of the family, support the mother in decisions with respect to the welfare of the children and administer punishment when necessary.
