• The practice of forgiveness is our most important contribution to the healing of the world.

• Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense everything that comes from love is a miracle.

• Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

• It is our light, not our darkness which most frightens us.

• We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be?

• You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

How to get started

The best place to get started with Marianne Williamson is with her New York Times bestseller, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of “A Course in Miracles.” This book is based on the author’s experiences as a teacher and lecturer on the study guide “A Course in Miracles” (Foundation for Inner Peace, 1975).

In order to understand what Marianne Williamson has done in her book, I feel it would be helpful to describe “A Course in Miracles” (ACIM). About 1.8 million copies of ACIM were sold worldwide between 1976 and 2002. The Foundation for Inner Peace describes “A Course in Miracles” as follows:

A Course in Miracles is a complete self-study spiritual thought system. As a three-volume curriculum consisting of a text, workbook for students, and manual for teachers, it teaches that the way to universal love and peace—or remembering God—is by undoing guilt through forgiving others. The Course thus focuses on the healing of relationships and making them holy. A Course in Miracles also emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum, of which there are “many thousands.” Consequently, even though the language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity, it expresses a nonsectarian, non-denominational spirituality. A Course in Miracles therefore is a universal spiritual teaching, not a religion.

Williamson writes about love, relationships, God, self-esteem, and more. In a clear and understandable manner, A Return to Love describes what “A Course in Miracles” is about, outlining its basic principles and ideas. A Return to Love has sold over a million copies and is also available in audio format.

People have said that the three-volume curriculum of “A Course in Miracles” can be difficult to get through. Williamson brings “A Course in Miracles” to a larger audience in a very readable way. According to her, the book “is about the practice of love, as a strength and not a weakness, as a daily answer to the problems that confront us. How is love a practical solution? This book is written as a guide to the miraculous application of love as a balm on every wound. Whether our psychic pain is in the area of relationships, health, career, or elsewhere, love is a potent force, the cure, the answer.”
