The best place to get started with Marianne Williamson is with her New York Times bestseller, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of “A Course in Miracles.” This book is based on the author’s experiences as a teacher and lecturer on the study guide “A Course in Miracles” (Foundation for Inner Peace, 1975).

In order to understand what Marianne Williamson has done in her book, I feel it would be helpful to describe “A Course in Miracles” (ACIM). About 1.8 million copies of ACIM were sold worldwide between 1976 and 2002. The Foundation for Inner Peace describes “A Course in Miracles” as follows:

A Course in Miracles is a complete self-study spiritual thought system. As a three-volume curriculum consisting of a text, workbook for students, and manual for teachers, it teaches that the way to universal love and peace—or remembering God—is by undoing guilt through forgiving others. The Course thus focuses on the healing of relationships and making them holy. A Course in Miracles also emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum, of which there are “many thousands.” Consequently, even though the language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity, it expresses a nonsectarian, non-denominational spirituality. A Course in Miracles therefore is a universal spiritual teaching, not a religion.

In a clear and understandable manner, A Return to Love describes what “A Course in Miracles” is about, outlining its basic principles and ideas. People have said that the three-volume curriculum of “A Course in Miracles” can be difficult to get through. Williamson brings “A Course in Miracles” to a larger audience in a very readable way.
