Randi Fredricks Quick Facts

http://DrRandiFredricks.com

I provide a unique holistic approach to psychotherapy by combining my education and experience, including a Ph.D. in Psychology and a Doctorate in Naturopathy. As a psychotherapist in San Jose, I also have accreditations as a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, EMDR, Registered Addiction Specialist, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, and Certified Clinical Herbalist. This multi-disciplinary approach allows me to approach issues from a comprehensive and individualized perspective, helping the people I work with to feel better faster and appreciate lasting results.

Recent scientific research from respected institutions like Harvard and Yale confirms that complementary and alte ative therapies can help heal psychological problems significantly faster than psychotherapy alone. Moreover, clinical studies report that this approach markedly reduces the incidence of relapse that frequently occurs as we recover from psychological distress. This is exactly why I combine psychology, naturopathy and nutrition - so that my clients can return to health and happiness quickly and stay that way.

My book, Healing and Wholeness: Complementary and Alte ative Therapies for Mental Health, contains thousands of studies on the scientifically-proven efficacy of using such therapies in the treatment of the following mental health problems:

  • Depression
  • Seasonal Effective Disorder
  • Postpartum Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Insomnia
  • Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Eating Disorders
  • Substance Abuse Disorders
  • Nicotine Addiction
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Stress Management
  • Cognitive Decline and Dementia

In treating mental health, lifestyle and quality of life factors are critical. Important considerations include physical health, regular exercise and fitness, recreational pursuits, creative expression, healthy diet, regenerative sleep, meaningful work, financial security, residential stability, satisfying interpersonal relationships, and spiritual practices.

How I work...

At San Jose Counseling and Psychotherapy, I offer an unusually successful approach to psychotherapy combining mindfulness-based approaches and naturopathy with the aim of increasing insight, wellness, and relational connectivity.

The interactive quality of my work invites safe self-exploration and supports the journey towards meaningful change. The methods I use are subtle, and my clients generally don't know I'm using a particular technique - only that they feel better.

My sessions are powerful and yet unobtrusive and my style is gentle and effective. While emphasizing positive thinking, trust, self-love, and honesty with an open the heart, I encourage self-awareness to change self-destructive patterns, unconscious belief systems and unhealthy habits. I'm particularly committed to encouraging a shift towards self-discovery, empowerment, and healthier communication.

Although Jainism is one of the smallest organized religions, it has the most pervasive practice of fasting. In Jainism, the women, in particular, partake in frequent fasts, often for long periods. In a similar fashion as Hinduism, fasting is performed in Jainism in conjunction with lunar cycles. Prior to undertaking a fast, the participant makes a vow, considered a formal statement of intent.

Most of us probably do not realize that when we meditate or fast for a spiritual reason we are partaking in asceticism, one of the oldest known spiritual disciplines. Asceticism is the practice of rigorous self-denial and active self-restraint performed as a spiritual discipline. The origins of asceticism are traced to prehistory, to primitive and archaic society.

Motherhood can be a magical time. Like other life transitions, it can also be fraught with challenges. A 2006 Danish study discovered that new mothers are at an increased risk for mental disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder in the first 3 months following the birth of their first child. Because of this—and the fact that PPD is so prevalent—new mothers may want to seek psychotherapy in the months following childbirth to help with the transition into motherhood.r

Any experts concur that more remedies are needed to help drinkers who overdo it cut down. The prescription medications approved for treating alcohol abuse and dependence don't work for everyone. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 1 in 6 U.S. adults binge drinks. However, addiction doctors disagree on the definition of binge drinking. According to the CDC, binge drinking is having four or more drinks on one occasion for a woman and five or more for a man. The gender difference is due to the fact that men and women metabolize alcohol at a different rate.

Possible causes include a combination of biological, psychological, and social sources of distress. Increasingly, research suggests these factors may cause problems in brain function, including abnormal activity of certain neural circuits in the brain. The persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest that characterizes major depression can lead to a range of behavioral and physical symptoms. These may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of suicide.

Throughout history in the East and the West, healers have recognized the importance of diet, and strived to understand its health-promoting and healing powers. Only relatively recently, with the development of sophisticated scientific tools of measurement, have researchers begun to appreciate how and why this is the case. The explosion of interest in nutrition has led to fascinating revelations, most of which confirm the opinions of ancient medical practitioners, while uncovering new and exciting opportunities to understand how we can improve mental health through dietary manipulation.

When it comes to what we eat, we tend to worry more about our waistlines than we do our brains. But a diet that contains a wide assortment of healthy fruits and vegetables doesn’t just benefit your body, research indicates it can protect your brain from cognitive decline as you age. In order to defend against a variety of age-related conditions that can impair your memory and the general functioning of your brain, a good first step is to concentrate on incorporating nutrients into your diet from a variety of fruits and vegetables.
