Stress is disorganized. It feels focused, unrelenting, and probably targeted right at you. But stress is not a thing. Stress is, in large part, the conflict you feel when your boundaries are being stretched. Stress in the workplace is your boss testing your boundary for autonomy. Or it could be you pushing your boundaries of experience and insight out from what they have been pigeonholed in for so long. You have a better chance of answering "How can I fight stress?" if you hit back at it with a plan.

There are many theories on what leadership is. People love to give flowery language and fiery quotes that seem more motivational than instructional. Listing endless adjectives about leaderships is not defining leadership or even describing leadership. It actually shows how hard it is to say what leadership is. It’s more than just holding a position of authority. It’s more than just developing personal excellence. It’s more than just cheering people on. It is especially more than yelling at or threatening them. But there are not too many theories on what leadership is not.

In these economic times, practically no one has the luxury anymore of joking “I can’t be broke – I still have checks left!” Managing your money is a necessity. Unfortunately, all of the information out about how to set up a budget almost always ignores the most important point: the purpose of the budget. Family budgeting has a purpose. That is either to stop or redirect spending, or to force savings. If your budget is not doing one of these two things, your budget isn’t really doing anything except increasing your stress. And no stress management system can fight against that.

Stress, as most people use that term, really refers to the reaction that you have to a stressful situation. This is the “fight or flight” reaction. It is the instinctive and unconscious preparation of all your internal systems - muscles, emotions, adrenaline, will - to respond stress as a threat. You either fight a threat or you run away from it. The cost on you internally is enormous. Each such reaction degrades the system’s ability to respond, much like using a knife dulls the edge ever so slightly with each use.

A major and consistent source of stress for most people is money. Well, actually the stress is caused by spending more money than they bring in or have. The answer to this is simple: spend less. Yeah, and the answer to losing weight is spend more calories than you eat. So let’s come up with a plan for realistic family money management and hopefully get rid of some of that stress with a realistic budget.

Truly unleashing your maximum personal effectiveness requires faith. Not faith in a religious sense. Faith in yourself and your abilities. Faith that you have unwavering hope that your goals can be accomplished. This is different from having faith that a supe atural being or exte al force will cause everything to work out for your best. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But having faith in yourself is a much more reliable strategy than hoping for the best.

What would work be without stress? Pretty unsuccessful! Stress at work lets you know that you are challenging your own limits, when you are pushing beyond your own limits, like when you push yourself to finish a project before the deadline. Many people think of time management as micro-managing your day by filling up every minute with a tedious list of A-B-C prioritized tasks. Actually, time management is self discipline. It’s the discipline to say no to distractions and interruptions, and stay focused on the task at hand. Stress management is more than just meditating and exercising. It is eliminating the stressors in your life. Stress and time management are actually methods for liberating your life, not restricting it. Here are 7 tips for using stress and time management to free yourself:

A leader knows that he or she may be the smartest person in the room, but isn't smarter than the entire room. Use your team for good ideas. Leaders have a combination of intelligence, charisma, character and experience. These are very difficult to define and even harder to teach. Which is good, because this article is not about any of these characteristics. It is about personal excellence, but that’s at the end of the article.r

How to get started

At my last training session at my dojo (karate achool) before I entered law school, my sensei (karate teacher) attacked me mercilessly, pressuing me, repeatedly knocking down and for far longer than the usual sparring session. "Good job. You didn't quit," he said. "Now law school will be a piece of cake." And he was right. I soon realized that the same internal stress fighting mechanisms and focus and attention to detail were needed in the courtroom and the dojo fighting ring. I developed STRESS JUDO COACHING to match the efficiency and progression of the martial arts belt training system to the immediacy of stress management training, so you can use it to maximum effectiveness in minimum mastery time.
