Hypnosis is a state of relaxation and when in hypnosis your brain waves alter from the beta pattern of normal waking consciousness to the alpha-theta pattern of sleep and dreaming. What does this really mean and how can this be beneficial to you? It means that you have access to the workings of your subconscious mind.
Broadly speaking, your conscious mind is the logical, rational and problem-solving part of your mind, whereas your subconscious mind is the emotional and imaginative part of your mind. Your conscious mind operates your working memory store (which only holds about 7 chunks of information at any one time) whereas your subconscious contains your long term memory and emotions and controls your nervous system. Needless to say, this is a rather larger and an extremely important portion of your mind.
How many times have you said or thought "I know what I want to do", or "I know what I should do" and yet continue to do what you are used to doing? How many times have you felt a particular feeling, but not been able to control it? Your subconscious mind works and "feels" automatically and instinctively, whereas your conscious mind "tries" to do things. One can appreciate the accuracy and perceptiveness of the phrase "being in two minds" when you begin to consider the different roles of the conscious and subconscious.
When in hypnosis, your conscious and analytical mind is quietened, allowing access to your subconscious mind, the part which is emotional and creative and imaginative. Thus hypnotic suggestions can be made directly to your subconscious mind, enabling a quick and easy change in automatic thought processes, feelings and behavior.
